THIS IS US — “The Music and the Mirror” Episode 514 — Pictured: (l-r) Sterling K. Brown as Randall, Susan Kelechi Watson as Beth — (Photo by: NBC)

The decision to root Season 5’s storyline in the events of the current world impacted Beth’s hopes and dreams this week. Thanks to the ongoing COVID-related crisis and the social-distancing practiced as a result, Beth’s dance school unfortunately goes under in “The Music and the Mirror”. Poignant scenes juxtaposing the first time Beth was forced to give up her dream of dancing with her current situation brought additional gravity to how painful the experience must have been for her.

    Paul and Caroline also discuss:
    • What the warm reconciliation between Kate and Rebecca might mean for Rebecca in the VERY near future.
    • Zoe and how she mucked around with Kevin’s head (and if this is actually a narrative red-herring)
    • Kate, Toby, and the wise words offered by Toby’s dad – and what they could mean

    • The Surgeon’s Files: The Prodigal Son Podcast (Episode 212 with Guest, Tom Payne)

Welcome to The Surgeon’s Files: The Prodigal Son Podcast, your unofficially official Prodigal Son after-show podcast!

      Cr: Phil Caruso/FOX

Each week, The Surgeon’s Files: The Prodigal Son Podcast will break down the week’s episode of Prodigal Son and bring you interviews with the show’s cast and creatives!

NOTE: We recorded this episode, as well as our interview with Tom Payne, on Monday, May 10. Literally minutes after we finished recording, the news circulated that Prodigal Son had been cancelled. So, when you listen, it’s going to sound like we’re still waiting on renewal news because we were. We hope it gets picked up somewhere but, if not, please listen to Tom’s words about his time working on the show and let us appreciate the time we got to spend with these characters and their stories. We hope you enjoy the listen.

This week, Mike and Sheila deep dive into Episode 212, “Sun and Fun”! Afterwards, stick around for our exclusive interview with Malcolm Bright himself, the wonderful Tom Payne! Tom stayed with us for almost an hour and took us through his entire time with the show and even teased next week’s finale! He was very gracious with his time and gave wonderfully thoughtful answers, a true delight to speak to. Do Not Miss This Interview!

1:22:36 – Time Code for Start of the Tom Payne Interview.

    • Escaping Gilead! The Handmaid's Tale Podcast (Episode 404)

Hopefully, listeners won’t get too frustrated with the number of times Caroline and Paul ask, “Why?” concerning this episode’s events. Although we’re glad to see June and Janine as far away from Gilead’s center of power as possible, their decisions never struck either of your loyal hosts as believable. Why a tanker car? How were they able to get out? Super jumping and arm-strength? Why shouldn’t they lose some toes or their feet if it was so cold? Why not hunker down in one of the Hum-Vees? Is that really the way they transport milk?

On the other hand, we -really- enjoyed watching Janine’s backstory. Not that we enjoyed watching a young woman go through a horrible time in her life – we WANTED that context for Janine. We knew she arrived at the Red Center already sort-of broken inside before they even took her eye. Now, from what happened before and at the end of this episode, we know she’s much stronger than has been revealed so far.

Paul and Caroline also talk about:

      • Rita’s Canadian adventure and her masterful handling of the Waterfords
      • Janine and June’s long history of give and take
      • Janine’s hidden strength

Christian Dominique Borle is a two-time Tony Award-winning actor and Broadway favorite, who was born on October 1, 1973 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He attended the city’s famed School of Drama at Carnegie Mellon University, graduated in 1995, and moved to New York City.

After appearing in a German production of The Who’s Tommy and a National Tour of West Side Story, Borle made his Broadway debut, appearing as Willard Hewitt in the 1998 Broadway adaptation of Footloose. He went on to join the ensembles of the 2000 revival of Jesus Christ Superstar and the short-lived 2002 musical Amour. His first starring role came as he assumed the role of Jimmy Smith from Gavin Creel in the Broadway premiere of Thoroughly Modern Millie in 2003. Next, he played several roles in Monty Python’s Spamalot, starred as Emmett Forrest in Legally Blonde (earning his first Tony nomination in 2007) and took over as Bert in Mary Poppins in October 2009.

The latter transferred to Broadway and resulted in Borle’s first Tony Award win in 2012. He returned to Broadway to originate the role of William Shakespeare in the musical comedy Something Rotten! in 2015, winning his second Tony, and went on to star as Marvin in the 2016 revival of beloved musical Falsettos. His performance as Marvin earned him his fourth Tony nomination, whilst he had already begun performances starring as Willy Wonka in the Broadway premiere of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory since March 28, 2017. He played his final performance in the Roald Dahl classic on January 14, 2018.

Although primarily considered a stage actor, he has also squeezed in work on both the silver and small screen, most famously starring as Tom Levitt in NBC’s Broadway-centric TV series “Smash”. In addition, he also starred in NBC’s popular live televised musicals, portraying Max Detweiler in “The Sound of Music Live!” in 2013 and Mr. Smee and George Darling in “Peter Pan Live!” in 2014.
