Once upon a time, superhero movies started out as self-contained narratives. If the film was successful, a sequel and third film would often follow. These films built up their own worlds and rules, and concerned themselves only with whatever narrative trajectory was need for this specific character, not advertising characters for spinoffs. It was a brief, but glorious time when directors could actually use their vision and skills to tell stories that they fond interesting.
