Second Lieutenant Puneet Nath Datt, He was an officer of the Indian Army's 11 Gorkha Rifles. He was martyred on the 20th July 1997. Posthumously awarded India's highest peace-time gallantry award, the Ashok Chakra for his bravery displayed in an operation conducted against foreign terrorists hidden in a three-storey building in the Naushera area of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. The award was received by his mother, Anita Datt from the President of India on 26 January 1998, India's Republic Day. As Sri Lanka continues to reel under a political and economic crisis, the Indian government has decided to hold an all-party meeting to discuss the situation in the neighbouring country.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will, during the all-party meeting, brief leaders of various political parties on the Sri Lankan crisis.

Meanwhile, at a meeting of various parties convened ahead of the monsoon session of Parliament, Tamil Nadu-based Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) demanded that India intervene in the crisis plaguing Sri Lanka.
