In “Awakening from the Meaning Crisis” Vervaeke unpacks terms we use, including mindfulness, translated from “sati,” which is a kind of remembering.  This is a bruited-about word, but Vervaeke points out we have a lot of vagueness and confusion around it.  He tries to provide a definition, which is not a feature list, as we often do when we try to define mindfulness.  Vervaeke tries to provide a structural-functional account, like Plato’s eidos.

Vance’s memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, and go on to talk about Vervaeke’s project in Awakening from the Meaning Crisis.  He wants to recover the various parts of the tradition that have informed our ways of thinking without our knowing it, sources such as the Bible and Aristotle, as well as possible solutions that seem to be popular, like mindfulness, Stoicism, and psychedelics.  I talk about some of these as well as my wisdom and awakening ways, like folklore and philosophical dialogue.
