Longevity, how long will your podcast episodes live as listeners? One of the things we've all come to love about podcasts that have been going for a while is that once we discover them, we're normally able to dive into the archives, sometimes years back to get a sense of how the podcast started.

Now, I work with lots of podcasters and one of the main things I often find myself reminding them is that each episode is an asset. As you'll know, the definition of an asset is that it accrues value and provides future value and as the podcaster and the owner of the asset, it's not just your listener, who benefits in a previous segment. Hi! It’s Toby Goodman here fresh back in London from my trip to Podcast Evolutions 2022 in Los Angeles.

The first week-long in-person event I (and many others) attended since before the pandemic and I’m exhausted.

Being surrounded by so much noise and so many people, the challenge was (for all of us) to connect with the right ones.

And the good news is…I met a LOT of people.

The bad news is - I couldn’t tell you what 80% of them actually do. Even after speaking with them for up to 15 minutes. And that’s a shame, because maybe if they were able to articulate it I could have hired them. And if not, maybe I could have partnered with them or… simply introduced them to other people in my world who might hire or partner with them.

After all - that's what these in-person events are about right? Networking - Not sales immediately - but increasing our networks.

So rather than focusing on the ‘who and do what statement’ I found myself asking these people another question… And this is a question I encourage you to ask people you meet AND have an answer for yourself.

And that question is simply…“What sort of results are you getting for your clients right now?”

The reason that is so powerful is because it prevents people telling you where they want to go, and focuses them on the reality of their situation.

What that means is you can immediately discover how you can serve them.

It also enables you to show results rather than tell people about you…So as a podcaster here are 2 more questions in the same vein that I encourage you to ask yourself and have answers for…

- What kind of results are you getting your listeners right now?

- What kind of results are you getting your guests right now?

So I wanted to use my psychic powers to predict exactly what 80% of podcasters I meet will say when I ask them about their show.

The following is exactly how not to introduce yourself on your podcast…

So there you have it, a boilerplate intro for a podcast no one wants.

If you find yourself falling into any of those traps you can make your intro a million times more effective if you simply add a target market.

I’ll now read it again - It’ll be terrible but by adding one word - any least it has some sort of chance of attracting someone.

Slightly less terrible intro…

For the best part of 20 years, I attended 8 live events a week. Sometimes 14.

Because that’s what it took to make a living as a working musician.

While the pandemic brought all that industry to a shocking halt I had already started my journey into building a podcast production company and advisory business.

And in February 2020 JUST before the world locked down - I was able to attend Podcast Movement Evolutions in LA.

When I was there I noticed some striking similarities between how people in podcast land behaved and how members of the company of a touring show behaved.

Just like the world of showbiz, the podcast industry is made up of front-of-house and back-of-house types.

Let me explain - On a broadway or west end show - you have the performers on stage - in podcast land - you have the hosts and guests.

In showbiz, we have the technical crew, stage managers, producers, directors…. and in pod-land we have marketers, audio engineers, producers, show note writers, etc…

Now in the 20 years, I worked exclusively in showbiz I’ve been on really enjoyable tours… and some awful ones.

During the unhappy tours, people would keep themselves to themselves - and that made for less fun and almost certainly a less cohesive performance.

But the successful ones had the following in common…  No matter what role people had - they all knew each other and they all worked together for the good of the show.

When I went to Podcast Movement in LA I saw a mix of both… and in some cases, there was a massive invisible wall between the people in tech and the podcasters.

But just like in showbiz - and yes you could certainly argue that podcasting is showbiz these days… the people having the best time and creating the most profitable relationships were the ones getting to know others around them and building real-time human connections.

When the pandemic hit we were all pretty much trapped in our virtual worlds.

So now the world is opening and we’re all starting to go out - two might be wondering… should podcasters attend or even create live events? Do we need to?

Well - I think we do. In fact - the people I connected with in person in February 2020 helped me to sustain and build business throughout the pandemic.

Serendipitous moments and face-to-face conversation have been missed.

So that’s why I’ll be heading back to LA next week to Podcast Movement 2022 to see my friends and colleagues from the industry and meet some new ones.

So no matter if you’re a technician or a host, a promoter, established, new to podcasting… or a mix of all of that and more and you’re attending… please come and say hi! I might even have a copy of my book Narrow Podcasting to give you!

The same applies to any other in-person events too.

So my tip for you today is… refill your hand sanitizer and go out and meet people in real life. I’m sure you won’t regret it.

Today I woke up to a couple of notices, a notice from Kate, who I work with, who linked an article from nine to five Mac analysts that said Spotify is close to overtaking Apple podcasts in the number of users. This is an article on nine to five Mac from September the 21st. So that was the first thing I woke to. The second notification was from a client over in Dublin, in Ireland. And it was a slightly panicked message saying, although my podcast has been published, it's not showing up in Spotify. And that gets me thinking again about how much control independent podcasters really don't have on what's going on with Apple. What's going on with Spotify. We just don't have control over that stuff, you know, but the good thing was because she's using Blubrry and she's using the plugins and she's got that podcast on her website.

I was able to remind her in a friendly way that it was okay. She could still go ahead and announce the fact that the podcast was live because it's living on her website in a blog that was built specifically for her podcast, which is brilliant. So she doesn't have to wait. She was under the illusion that she had to wait for Spotify to pull the podcast before she could officially let them know that it was out. But of course, we don't want her sending people to Spotify. It's going to show up at some point there, but we want, and she wants people going to her website because after all, she's an independent podcast who's running a business and she's using her podcast to generate business.

So as she publishes her podcast and she announces it to the people on her list and the people in her world, she's only really ever pointing them to her website where her podcast by the way is framed and shown around everything else she does in her business life, in her independent life as a podcaster.

So if you are not doing it already, just one more friendly reminder, please, please, please set up your website with a blog roll and make sure that you create a separate link for every single episode, which is essentially a blog entry and make it clear, make it easy. So it's easy to send out a link to your email list and to people and publish on your social media platforms that say, Hey, a new podcast out, it's at my website.com/podcast/name of the episode. And then when the big boys and the big platforms like Spotify and Apple and all that lot have a blip, and something goes wrong in the matrix, you don't lose out because you are hosting your content on your website with Blubrry hosting.

I've spoken a lot about email and why you should be collecting email addresses from your subscribers or followers. And I've also spoken about how you might get listeners onto your email list. So they stop becoming a stat and start becoming a raving fan and maybe even a client. But today I want to take this step further to encourage you to do some basic segmentation with your email list. Let me explain. I don't speak to my friends the way I speak with my kids and I don't speak to my clients the same way I speak to my parents. If I'm introduced to someone for the first time in person, I'll likely greet them pending pandemic-related restrictions with a hand and shake. If I meet an old friend, they get a big hug.

So why do so many podcasters with email lists communicate to their guests with the same emails they send to their listeners?



Sure, both have invested time in you, but while your listeners choose when to put you in their ears, you already know your guests, at least to a certain extent, and they created time and space in their diary to open up to you for the benefit of you, your show and your listeners. So my tip today is to think about how you can continue the conversation with guests who have been on your podcast and segment your lists. So you are not treating your guests the same. You are treating your listeners depending on when you're listening. There is a lot to come to support you with all this.

There's been a lot of talk online recently about if you should run an email list for your podcast in the last week or so now my answer to this is always a hundred percent. Yes, I've covered why before. And I'm sure I'm going to revisit this again because it's an important topic for us independent podcasters, but here's one thing people often overlook when emailing out to of their list of listeners. You're probably aware that emails from a list are often sent from an email address. That's set up for this precise, dedicated reason. It makes sense, right? You wouldn't want people actually replying to your automated email. Would you except maybe you would now. I'm not sure what you are doing with your podcast, but if you are trying to build followers, fans, listeners, or even customers inviting people to get in touch directly with you is more often than not a very good idea.

So today's tip well, most people are savvy to the fact that they're getting list email, especially if they see the footer, but it doesn't mean that you can't let them know, okay. To hit reply and that you check your inbox a few times a week. These are the kind of marketing activities that can really help build what you are doing with your show. And they're much harder to delegate than the time-consuming production element. About once a month or so I come across someone looking for co-host posts in podcast forums. Only have to say, Hey, I'm looking for a co-host. Who's interested to get a flood of questions, freehand raising replies, uh, even to one post that said, just to be clear, I'm not looking for financial investment. I'm only looking for a co-host that post got loads of replies as if time was less valuable than money. Nine out of 10 times, people post stuff like this want the glory of being a podcaster without doing the work. Being a good podcaster requires more than just paying hosting. If you're smart enough to do that. And website subscriptions. Look when co-hosted podcasts work, the chemistry between each host can be what gets listeners coming back week after week. No question at all, but partnerships are not to be taken lightly.

They involve commitment, a mutual understanding. So if you're thinking of starting a podcast with a co-host or thinking of partnering up, get clear on the following, are you interested in know about the theme or focus of the podcast? It does have a theme, right? Can you add value to the podcast? Is your point of view or your interest enough to sustain your time commitment? Are you the begin to your co-host yang? Who is the owner of the podcast, as in who owns the actual hosting and website of what happens when one of you is sick replay or solo, who does what who's in charge of research segments, doing emails and socials? Do you have time? So today's tip is when it comes to co-hosting know what you're getting yourself into. I'd love to know what your podcast prenups look like.

Today, Podcast Networks.

If you've been asked to join a podcast network, don't without understanding the motives and values of the network owner of themselves. If you've been asked to join, think of Groucho marks, who once said, I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member. Here are some things to watch for. Know the benefits to you as the network owner sees them and ask what's in it for the network owner themselves. The answer, if it's a value should be very easy and quick to understand. For example, our network is about farming. So your show would be perfect for us. Get clear on if you retain ownership or if you'll be giving up ownership of your podcast completely to join the think about what that means for you as well. If you had to do that next, understand how easy it might be to leave.



If the network isn't working out the way you'd hoped, maybe you're not generating the level of revenue from sponsors you'd hoped for, or maybe they bring a podcaster into the network whose values are at odds with yours. Sometimes joining a network is absolutely the right thing to do, but there are networks that exist that don't care about the win-win of a partnership. You can get a sense of who they are because they'll literally let anyone in. And honestly, if you're going to be part of a club, do you really want to be in one with no red velvet rope at the door? In other words, be a bit more like Mr. Marks, on the other hand, maybe it's time to step up and build your own network. Now that really is one sure way of playing a bigger game in the podcasting world, doing it properly requires the skills of professionals and as it happens, that's where we can help.
