In James' letter to persecuted Christians he has much to say about suffering. For many of us, we see suffering as unlucky inconvenience. But James assures his readers that suffering can be so much more. It can be a seat of divine dependence that allows us to sit hopeful in any hardship or heartache.

The final words of 1 John warn us to keep ourselves from idols. John knows, as does his contemporary James, that idols hinder our potential while keeping our belief from becoming followership. And if we aren’t following the lead of Jesus, then how are we any different than the demons? Even they believe.

What God is, did, and does is love. Never has this been better shown than through the atoning death of Jesus on the cross. And it’s the cross, when understood rightly, that unlocks our potential to love one another.

Real love is both an overflow of abiding in Jesus, and it's an intentional decision we make in light of who we are in Christ.
