Bob: People are using their animals as maybe an escape from family or children.

Karla: It’s not an escape. It’s actually, in my opinion, because we are very disconnected from our friends and family because we’re more connected electronically. We’re disconnected physically. Years ago, you used to go visit grandma and grandpa on Sunday after church. Well, nobody does that anymore. So that hug from grandma or your cousins or all those kinds of things that you had is now replaced by an animal. It’s unconditional love, and that’s what we all want. We look for it.

Bob: It boils down to our loved ones. How can Invisible Fence Brand help to nature and nurture that relationship with my best friend?

Karla: It can make a relationship better. You already have a great relationship with your dog, but it can make it so much better. Dogs are like children, and when they misbehave it just makes you angry. A lot of times with Invisible Fence Brand, what you can do is build that relationship by being able to go in the yard and play ball with your dog without them being on a chain. You can garden in your yard, and they can be out there with you and not feel like they’re attached to something. The other thing is that it’s freedom. The other part about it is if you do have problem areas in your home where dogs are naughty – let’s say the garbage can. Invisible Fence has products that when you come home after a long day of work and you really just want to be with your friend, but you’re not cleaning up the mess your friend made, and now you resent them because they don’t really know why they did it; they’re dogs. But we can put shields there, they can stay out of the garbage, you don’t come home to a mess, and you can come home to that unconditional love that one dog that waited all day for you. It’s awesome the different things that we do. It’s just really awesome. It’s cool.

Bob: I think it’s pretty cool the products Invisible Fence Brand has that helps us to achieve that and to show our pets that they’re truly loved. What are some of your favorite products that you guys have?

Karla: I have so many. It’s proving to them that we love them, but it’s also keeping them safe so that we can keep them and love them for as long as we can. That unconditional love doesn’t last forever. We only have them a short period of time, and so we want the absolute best for them, and to keep them safe. Some of our products that we have that I just absolutely love, I love our shields products. I absolutely love them [and] how we can do so many different things with them. When you have two dogs in the house and you’ve got one that pretty much can go anywhere and you’ve got another one that’s really, really naughty, you can make so that the one dog isn’t affected by it and the other dog you’re keeping safe. For instance, my dog, Ella. Ella is very naughty. She is a 14-year-old black lab-basset mix, as you know, and has the most stoic, innocent face of any animal I’ve ever met in my life. Most people look at me and go, ‘Oh, my God. Ella’s naughty?’ I’m like, ‘Oh, she’s the naughtiest dog I have.’ But what’s great about the Invisible Fence shields is that I can keep her out of things that she shouldn’t be into. For instance, we had a cupboard that we didn’t have a shield in. My husband bought a huge tub of chocolate Slim-Fast that he likes to drink in the morning. She got into it.

Bob: And there was a mess all over the place.

Karla: Oh, my gosh. She flung it all over the walls and then licked them. It was just nasty – very, very nasty. And the other part about it was that she also got sick. She could have died from that. That’s chocolate, and it was a huge, 100-ounce powder that she ate almost all of it. Not only did we have the mess, but we had the fear she was going to be sick. She had a tummy ache for a couple days, and then that was it.

Bob: So the shields will work for something like that?

Karla: Yeah. Right now we have the shields set up in that cupboard. She can’t get in there. I have another dog that likes to lay next to that cupboard – a little dachshund named Bucky – and Bucky can lay right next to it and doesn’t even know the shield is there. It doesn’t affect him.

  • E9 McHugh Excavating proud of core values
Dean McHugh from McHugh excavating what are you most proud of. What do you think of McHugh excavating.

Well I'm proud that this company that my dad started out of the basement of our house when I was 10 years old is still around after 42 years. Lot of people that we've helped over the years with their projects and with their problems there's people some water problems right now and sometimes it's just a little bit of grating in the backyard to get that to go away and sometimes it's not quite so simple and to think be more of a complex issue and I'm proud of helping those people. Probably most importantly I'm proud of all the good paying jobs and all the people that I've been able to support families working here.

Q Over the years keep things local that's that's fantastic. Dean Mikir from ACU excavating. I know that any Web site it says innovative construction solutions of 1976 which is like you said 42 years ago when your father started the company. And what I like about your website is you've actually got a page that's got your core values on there. How often do you see an excavating company with their core values listed right on their website.

Well the core values are something we really believe in by about four or five years ago sat through a seminar on our guys talked about the Ritz Carlton you know that I don't stay there and few do. But we all know what the Ritz Carlton is and we know what their reputation services. And he talked about how they use core values to make sure everybody in the company is always thinking like they want their reputation to be. And we felt at that time that our company demonstrated a lot of the things that a customer would like to see or an employee would like to see in a company. But after listening to that fellow give that seminar we realized we get these things out on paper and so we had several management meetings and that came up with what we thought were the 13 most important values to our company. We define them. We came up with examples of them and we take time every week. Every Monday morning we have a 15 minute conference call that everybody in the company is on and we ROTY through the 13 works out well because at four times in a 52 week year but we rotate through those core values and we have the column Tuesday and the values there and we discuss we're being fair means improving the customer being fair to your fellow employees. We have guys that chime in from all on the job sites and the example they've seen in the last week of what being fair is and like you said there's 13 of them and there is just one of them. But we feel having that reminder and talking about that for 10

to 15 minutes every week keeps that top of mind and keeps everybody in the company from top to bottom hopefully they're producing and acting out what we want to be as a company.

  • E7 Masters Services Chimney Chad dirty chimneys and cleaning logs
Growing up in Wisconsin I only knew three or four families that actually had wood burning fireplace or coming down to Texas. Everybody had a wood burning fireplace not knowing that. So as I'm driving around with this gentleman who worked for me Tell me about the chimney sweep the business. He's pointing. Every house has a chimney. If you draw a line from the East Coast the West Coast forward Dallas Texas is up to Tulsa. The climate is a seasonal climate where it does have we do have four seasons but we have a mild Four Seasons.

So what kind of things need to be done on a regular basis when it comes to having a fireplace or having a chimney no matter where you live.

You should your fireplace and chimney inspected once a year. Main thing is to have your fireplace be in a working order and safe chimney had to dirty chimneys cause issues in a home dirty chimney cause many issues. Number one is there an allergy. Number two is a dirty chimney who accumulate soot and over time it will turn into a dangerous hazard that can cause the chimney fire across the country.

There are many chimney fires due the lack of proper maintenance yearly maintenance on fireplaces and chimney.

No. Can I know that there's a product out there that I can burn in my fireplace that will miraculously clean out my chimney is that something that you would suggest people to do.

It's actually not a bad issue I used to think that it wasn't but that said My blog is not a bad deal to burn every once in a while and your chimney is what it does is it crystallizes. Just like it does and has everything crystallizes soot and it all fall. The problem with that is you're not also seeing you're not also getting the result of a chimney inspection to see if there is any damage that occurred during or during before or after the process. The problem with the law those logs is that you burn you burn that log you clean your chimney. You don't think you need to have a professionally looked at which is exactly the problem with that log is people will have issues with the fireplaces. They say they knock UTM inspected. They're just having the logs burned. And with that burning that thing. Okay. My gym is clean there's nothing wrong with my chimney. Well there can obviously be many things wrong with the chimney that have occurred over time and the false sense of security with burning a log does not replace an annual chimney inspection.

So you say annual chimneys inspections we do.

Reminder emails and calls will leave for people to do that. With that most people that burn enough will do it.

  • E1 Blues City Strength
    http://www.bluescitystrength.com/
    https://www.facebook.com/bluescitystrength/
A person who has never been to the gym before or when they go to a gym. They leave feeling unsuccessful because they were really kind of felt like they were going to do this and they get to the gym and then there psyched about their goals, are psyched about New Year's resolutions. I signed up for the gym. They're starting to pay a little bit of money to do that and then they get there and they just don't know what to do, and they're just kind of like floating about in a leave and it feels like that really wasn't worth it. I think that that person would definitely be someone well-suited to work with a trainer because we create that relationship with them and their experience Jason Friedman tell me little bit about who you are what I would say that I nobody who is very passionate about training and about fitness and about the daily practice of of movement. Why would somebody want to go to having having a place to go to food, to be able to work on yourself and kind of devote yourself to getting better and doing something worthwhile. When I kinda got into training and decided that I want to pursue this a little bit more seriously as a career. You know, as opposed to just like something that I like to do as a hobby, it was because I really felt like I didn't want to spend my time sitting in it at a desk and plugging away at something that wasn't particularly important to me and I was felt like no matter what was going on in my life that if I was able to get to the gym and I felt good. I felt like I did like II had a little bit of the success that they even if things were not particularly successful in other ways you can become a professional athlete but can everybody become healthier. Yeah for the fitness aspect of people's lives. What I really try to do is meet people wherever they are and try to make fitness or gym life. I guess you could say something that feels really at home. Philly feels really relatable to them. Not overwhelming. Or, you know, scary in any way that this is not like all you know you're you're going to come and get your ass absolutely handed to you by your trainer in your trainer to be yelling at you and making you feel bad about yourself that is the complete opposite of what I think training experience is that you not think it's a it's a relationship that that a trainer and person kind of develop in terms of like what it is that they want to get out of it. And there's anything that I really put out there to folks, it's that anybody can do it and that being healthy and being said of being strong or being able to move is about the practice itself. It's not when folks come in, so often they come in with you know very kind of like rigid goals, but they haven't worked out or moved it all in like 20 years and so they have their sights set on this very like specific idea without any process in order to get them there and that can be very quickly frustrating for people because the results take time and they're very indefinite. They're not like as finite as people think like oh yes I Verizon achieved and made it there. Now I'm done when really it's just about the consistency in the frequency and the practice which is something that you continue to go back to on a regular basis you continuing to work on on your movement, and that's really as in anything. What mastery is just the continued practice of working on it getting better and I find that through. That is how to me where the most success comes from is when somebody adopts this into their life. It fully integrates to come to the gym. They do the work. They leave the feel-good and that they come back and it's a it's a very positive rewarding full circle experience. So in that regard, there is no exact recipe. It is whatever somebody makes is that as long as it's something consistent to someone or some of the things that we can do simply in our house maybe one or watching television or got five minutes in between this meeting in the next meeting. What can we do that simple in our house or in our office. That's actually a I think one of the most important things most important places to pick it up would be at the office or at home. What I would say about the industry now is that as a trainer were tending to see the same injuries again and again and essentially there, sitting injuries, their poor posture injuries and that's because people your training yourself at all times. So the things that you do the most. Your body is adapting into those positions. So if you're kinda slouching at a desk and your wrists are all kind of been to encrypt over because you're banging on the keyboard and you're peering into the into the computer screen like kind of meaning for your neck is out of position and your back is curved. That's training for your body. So then when you stand up and you try to like straighten yourself out. It hurts. It feels kind of like unnatural feels bad and so that's when you know during that time when you're sitting I would say the first thing is get up. Don't sit still for a long extended periods of time. You know half hour 45 minutes really try to limit it, limit it to that is much as you can so that when you get up you you don't have to get up and do a power packed workout every half an hour, but if you get up and stretch and you move you take a quick walk maybe do a few reps of something like 10 good push-ups. 10 good squats, you know, I really some of the more basic foundational movements. It kind of resets your entire system reset your entire posture and so then when you sit back down to work and you have a little bit of awareness in terms of how you're sitting you know, holding your chest open, holding your shoulders, back and down sitting up nice and straight having to know the proper support in your in your lumbar spine that lower back area of the feet firmly planted on the ground and just some general awareness about the where your body is know in time and space. That's also training and can help alleviate a lot of these postural problems with people having so what is publicity strengthen what blue city strength is my business to take somebody's blues away by giving them a good workout. Blue city strength comes from my father. My pop school is a bluesman. He grew up playing the blues and he still does to this day stands out. You know with with some friends who he's grown up with your Chicago is known for the blues. Can anybody workout yeah ever anybody can work out that anybody who can move can do it, or should move and I think that the term working out might create a certain impression in somebody's head like they have to do this for hour and 1/2 dripping wet of sweater things like that and it depends on the person. It depends on who you know what your experience or background is any sort of injuries metal conditions of things that the program would be then uniquely suited for them to help them step-by-step get a little bit better as far as my clientele goes, I will. I work with kids and that I work with folks who are in their 80s folks who are like really serious about going after maybe an advanced certification of some kind or advanced training. You know like marathon prep for a triathlon recently been working with a guy recovering from cancer who you know. It lost a lot of weight and lost a lot of strength and decided he wanted to get control of his life again and wanted to dedicate himself to feeling strong and being physical and so II think it it it just depends anybody could do it to you only work out of a certain Jim or can I call blue city strength for any Jim I really only workout of the gym called the space okay which is run by Annie put rid you know we really work extremely well together and we have great great training staff you know where all training independently so it's a trainer's Jim, I do exclusively work out of the space right now. How do something to hold. The blue city strength, Jason telephone number is 773 301 0344 773-301-0344 I have a website. • E7 Eco Gardens by Washburn LLC Podcast
As we switch from season to season we're lucky in the Midwest to have four distinct seasons. What does eco gardens by Washburn do in the winter months.

Well in the winter months garden design is so sustainable landscape design. Getting ready for spring eco garden will also come out and do them like fruit tree pruning. No we're just gearing up and we're going to educational seminars trade shows getting ready to see what new things are coming out the next season. Plus there's always new diseases new pets that we have to learn about to watch for and how to combat them sharpening up the tools and making sure everything's ready to go for the next season as well.

I had the opportunity to walk through a garden with you and I thought that was really cool. Do you offer that as a service where you'll take somebody through and show them things in their yard that you could do this and this is what this plant does and here's why this one would be good for your backyard.

Yes absolutely. There's many people that call me just to come over for ideas so I go over and provide a consultation. And you know even with scheduling like OK Thero and when should I do this.

When should a true that when should they fertilize everything calendar based when it comes to dealing with your garden.

No no I wouldn't say calendar based I would say temperature based. You know we look at the life of the plant or the lifespan of the plant really the temperature makes the big difference.

We're known as the frozen tundra or at least the area of the frozen tundra. When it comes to when the ground freezes and we end up with her Snow is there anything that we can do or what should absolutely be done before our first snow flies Hulsey Lottering.

You don't need to fertilize things because they're going into dormancy. Well not evergreen. You could give a little shot of the light there right now definitely watering that in giving them a very very healthy drink. They need that energy to get down to their roots so that they can survive the winter because we're not probably going to get a whole lot of rain. Maybe we will in the winter as long as your larger plantings get a really healthy drink. Then you can start to say yep I did the best that I could to prepare these plants for winter.

A lot of the big box stores sell bags of mulch is that the kind of mulch that you're talking about and you're talking about mulching.

You can certainly use that but also press clippings and leave would work just fine. And if you have a straw bale around as long as these scenes are disease free and don't have a bunch of mold I'd say use them. And yet you could definitely use like a cedar molds if you like from the big box stores.

No problem when it comes to my asparagus do I cut those down or do I do a lot those winter and then come down in the spring.

Essentially you could do either one Bob. But if you wanna cut them down right now you certainly can. I'd probably cut to about 4 inches above soil level.

What about strawberries do I need to do anything with those.

Give him a good mulch. Get yourself a straw. Clubroom with and look best to be.

Do I want to cut him down at all or just put it right over the top of the leaves and everything I just put it right on top of them because they're going to those they're going to die anyway. When you start raking that stuff off in the spring it'll come right with it.

Everyone has their thing and my thing is that maybe social skills, but I want to universal across this woman name Holly you not Dr. she studied genocide like going to Rwanda and this is a white woman she is. She went Rwanda and other places where genocide as you study like wise and it's like that is why the like. She interviewed people who are in jail for horrible act against humanity. As you see them as people actually going to get Adderley's 100 grand kids and kids want to have their delicious favorite food and they realize that they did was wrong and and I'm like yeah Weimar Todd that I'll ever be like valedictorian used to compete in beauty competitions and when, and I was like well your dog. You can clack like a duck and now you can say her name hypnotist versus study are of genocide thank stigmatism brought you to where you wanted to be in life. I'm very happy I mean I'm good upon podcast with you, which is my therapy to walk my dog today than a Skype with the school in Boston. Just tell about hypnosis and how I got this career as a personal trainer at 530 and then my countable come hall will sit on the big DINNER and watch TV you know couple years ago you did serious with Walmart. Walmart got a hold me through some marketing team. I said let's do a commercial, it was great because I could just be myself and I think I'm hypnotist about your your your holidays so that like we had his drum. Sadly, my brother had thought rightly delete this €75 man's I asked the mother for some rollerskate and she's now no Senate going to ghost eight this year and I hypnotize him they wake up in the skies plan the dramas and that older man is like pretending that I escape and rollerskate down the hallway and it was get choked up on it. I liked it but it was a very fun commercial is a three minute long commercial but also working. I watched a couple of times. I agree with what holidays like for you all my gosh I had a very nice childhood. But I don't love Christmas my dad was self-employed as a photographer, like he Shaklee shadow Tribune and sometimes any shackles of Nelson Mandela twice so he's travel and it's been good to him, but being unemployed is like a feast and famine and so I remember one Christmas is a younger reason I don't deepen out of shape. If you don't get what you want. This year are everything you want this year as I know that it's fine. Don't worry. And now that I'm older I know that she was an upper my cousin who are younger than me. Make sure that everyone in the house like everyone I the whole family got present because my dad and he was super thoughtful and that she get my cousin Brandon who you met a toy, but you make sure that comes with batteries like the small taco stuff like that and the so I always felt like all we don't have money working to lose the house were poor, but is really my dentist extending himself to the entire family Circus was like now like we need to make more mightily to save money and might as I don't worry about that. I couldn't wrap my head around, knighted that we were okay. It was just that he was making sure what else had enough. You mentioned that Christmas that we are growing up you really like Christmas that much. I don't. I did neither. I wonder if that's a feeling that a lot of people have. I love Thanksgiving but I'm not a big fan of Asmus yeah everyone sit together even before and be happy. We hug on the couch but Christmas is like I got you something yummy coming better. I have to am to try to beat you next year, you know, and I think a lot of people unfortunately have that feeling. Do you practice your philanthropy because of the lessons you learn from your father. I'm sure and and my mom. My mom was a children's nurse for like 30 years my dad he you know people, the street, a massive change and he would tell them no, I will buy you something right now and whatever doing would stop. We go to like a street vendor or Burger King and you get them food and you wouldn't say watch this assignment. That is how you do it, but that was a message like take your time. Be thoughtful to people as people and don't just give them a handout. Try to make sure they do something it's nutrition, our bodies, it's amazing the lessons that children learn just by watching by observing the things that their parents and other people around them do true and like you said. I'm so very lucky because in out some to go to Jamaica again. We coached soccer and Christmas is huge in Jamaica like Heusen's are mentor who is from Jamaica you'd like all the kids they go crazy all the lights and everything some coaching soccer is a few days before Christmas likely to get for Christmas and they look at me, just like we were going to eat while you have a like your presence coaching but your dad to get you like that I don't know my dad okay so what would you want to get you should engage a brother like you guys will decrease like at work grab like curry goat or chicken right. I thought you guys went big and was like okay well maybe if there's one working parent of the household. This is going big for them but puts life in the perspective doesn't my gosh yeah parents in America like bagel exhausted by their kid everything they want – it's like we're going to eat baby and wearing a saying I will dance you might seen uncle not enough. You want children. Chris, I do. I used to be very selfish even more suckers. I am now and not want kids and I like being in control of things I like sleeping in. I'm a big dog lover but everything on the airport. If you locate a likely please come here and talk the talk of babies to be tough right and then I get you and I get to teach them some cool things and we can play with blocks and just having a fiancé bring that feeling to you or is it just something that is you getting older you're thinking you know what I'm can reach that point are I should become if I am getting older. I mean I been at some cool places in one house first before and I think this is a made them never get tired, but after the third, going to Alaska no matter how great Alaska is. It just got lonely looking at a waterfall next to the glacier and him alone. Now it's worth I'm try to buy Japanese tourist who don't speak a lot of English and like you see that marriage is like walking by like this is beautiful. 22. Please talk to me friends being an entertainer. Sometimes you will count on you to do something either forget or you get busy or like I finish a show I'm so happy showing well on a few drinks and I'll forget my obligations and people get bent out of shape. I missed a wedding this year because I had is with Stacy's family and I would like all make it to the wedding. I can slip to bond by and I didn't call to say I was in a make it and I didn't give a gift and a week later I forgot about. She Computex reaches a crisp. I'm so upset with you like I really told Avenue to be there. I was so excited to see you and Mike. It was my wedding you think is unfair expectations put on you since you're celebrity I call myself a celebrity sump. Some people do because I owe you wrong TV. I like yeah but cops and I let the TV show they're not celebrities and nicest people get arrested for stupid ship right whatever expectation they have of me is what they have an email I can just try to be true to myself and I was in my dad a lot is like a great gatekeeper. People asked my dad for tons of stuff on my behalf and he he let's like one request slip through. Like every month you like hey get a chance with your cousin in the hospital give give on Esther a phone call. I mean she's always asking that you just give her a phone call governing the water so it really doesn't take much this month were talking about holidays. So let's kind of circle background that is run of your father again. Did you have a chance when you are kid or did you tell your parents that you love them all the time. Nice to get upset when mom would say like goodbye before bed. I might know say good night good by me tonight and see you again tonight means I'll see you tomorrow. But yeah, my lover all the time and I tell my dad use I love them whenever I see him and my get a minute different date I get automated stapled to like North Carolina ab initio. I love you and there is inherent risk of just traveling there and I love you but I'm in the city like I talk you later bye since it is the holiday season. Chris what your holiday message on my gosh my message for the holiday. Enjoy the light fiancé put a Christmas I think she is like that look like night. I didn't want to enjoy this puppetry and and I don't and she was of the Christmas music all the time and even if you might like not be your thing, you might find it annoying are always a think Christmas music. Enjoy because one day you might not have that person. So enjoy the light gets dark. You get cold and lonely and if you didn't hear that Christmas music person might not be there. • E8 McHugh Excavating longevity training
when you look at the average amount of time that your people have worked for you deem how how long is the average. We've got a few field guys have been over 15 years. We had some guys that have retired from us here within the last three to five years. I would say as far as you know it's hard to say an average you know you've got some guys when you're over 15 years and then of course you've got some guys that might have been new this year. New last year I know as far as office people go you know my my dad's been around over 40 years. I've been around over 25. The rest of our office project management type staff. Most of them have been here over ten years some over 15 Dean McHugh from McHugh excavating train. Yes there's a lot of different training opportunities here. Q First and foremost we do our own training in the winter. We'll have three or four different half day to day sessions.

We will concentrate on different things that are relevant to most positions in the company. So like proper chain down for moving equipment or maybe confined space you know being able to safely enter manholes and take air monitor readings and stuff like that so nobody's ever in danger. Those take. Trench safety you know be used properly utilizing trench foxes so that people would be protected from Keyvan. Those are the kind of things that will train in the winter first aid type stuff more generic things that apply at all jobs. Q executing it provides that training to our own employees. In addition to that the two unions have training centers and a lot of our guys will end up going to the training centers if they have any layoff time in the winter for specific classes. For example the laborers will have a grade reading class or a pipeline class. You know the operators may have a class on running excavator running at doughs or things like that. So you know so there is ongoing training. Once people are in those positions but a lot of times people say hey you know what everybody wants experience. How do I get experience. Nobody will hire me. And our answer to that is we have a lot of different positions where a person can start out. A lot of times running one of our gumdrops might be an entry level position. There's a lot of guys here that started running a dump truck and then at some point decide they want to do something different and we're forgoing an opportunity to go into something different. We hire some guys right off the street that

don't have any industry experience. In fact we just hired one here about a month and a half ago. A younger fellow early 20s he has some experience building houses and doing some other somewhat construction related stuff but not earthwork or pipe stuff just a good hard working kid and we thought it's been good and. We put them into Labor's apprenticeship program. So he'll be in the next four years he will. He starts out. On an entry level apprentice type rate. He'll step up over the next four years to. Become a full journeyman in the.

Laborers Union. But in the meantime he'll get about 100 hours of schooling. Each winter. The Laborers Training Center so he's got some. On the job learning. And some. Will learning. As. He learns himself into a trade that should provide him a good living and a good retirement when he's done.

  • E6 Bill Temte favorite memory beer neighborhood
looking through the history of the old lacrosse it's obvious that the cross ended at the South End of the causeway goes north and that was the start of the north side which as we've said before was a community of its own had its own factories and the electric light and the rubber mills and tobacco company there Rose Street and so on.

And the two railroads. But it was self-contained in that. The interesting thing that has happened is since I've moved I've met a number of the northside LaCrosseer by each and one of them comes Oh yeah yeah I think remembered every Sunday afternoon my dad and make me go to your dad's store.

We'd cut through the whole the yards coming from over on the side of the street and going to the store because he wanted the nice juicy Apple for dessert. And so I talked to them about the nature of the neighborhood nature and our site. And I have not had one word of what or anything just one of them that's just the way it was.

We are our own neighborhood community and within that there was the the north the Roosevelt school I'm that editor eventually and in the middle and then the south and then Indian Hill that's what we used to call it by the river mills. What do you think that there was this thing as Northside pride because you hear people say Northside pride way more than you hear people say Southside pride because we were that neighborhood and everybody within our within our neighborhood area you know we didn't. We knew people wrong the whole north side but we were family and we do things with them for each other and stuff.

And that's what the pride and that's what we shared to me by this one lady that tight knit just two days ago again.

So you're quite often now but that neighborhood community and caring and family may have said this.

She said she'd have to go to my dad's and she's after a while I so I could just go in the back door and get in and go back out now.

Have you seen people kind of come together more in your later years and he did in the earlier years.

Because like I said the Northside Pride was a thing and people are still saying that but define find that people are kind of getting along better now than perhaps they used to when it comes to the city of lacrosse.

The nurse said people now know him very easily feel a part of the greater lacrosse. There wasn't that standoffish because again this whole side didn't want everything to do with her side. And we were happy with that.

You'd give me a couple of names of people that were characters in the back in the day like one arm Brown crazy band type and a half.

These are people who lived in this Northside community who were given a name and one name wrong because he lost his arm in a collision with a tree on a slender toboggan on the Indian hill because people had names that didn't mean they were lesser thought of or anything like that.

Well just nicknames and they're the characters that made you into the person that you are because you knew that right.

Yeah. They were characters but they were characters. And you know I didn't put words to put to it but it was just people who didn't get all upset about that name when I was called Billy or Bill or William didn't make any difference and I told the story about how and maybe I need to collectability the hand of a 50 of class reunion. We're sitting there in one of the lovely ladies of our high school class said Billy why didn't you ever ask me out on a date. And I said Derek I'm going to go back to the name. Billy.

Let me ask you this. What's that. What's the memory. If you were to if you were to tell somebody about your childhood what's the biggest memory or the memory that sets out the most.

Probably going fishing to brace prairie sitting in the back of the pickup truck of Phil Vitaliy in the car across the street. It had a place for people up front. Mom and Dad. Phil and Mabel vitality and then those four kids and some amount of the fifth riding the back of the pickup truck up 35 Z and then Z as far as who would go. And we'd stay up there two days a week we do this and we'd stay up there all day and a nice lunch would be prepared for us in the cabin which was the cottage and we'd fish from the bank and get a little older. We would push off in a rowboat. Good safe water and fish all day and then get thrown in the back of the truck and come home. The adults have a little more adult fun time. You can figure that one out. Yes it was. So that's one of the things that really members the more memorable part was Christmas at the tempting family. We read organ and my mother played the carols on the organ and as kids learned to sing at an early age. And my dear Dad would put on a Christmas program in the living room of this little bitty house of ours. The main living area and the mother would sit at the organ and play carols and ask kids. We were the three wise men because we had bathrobes that were checkered looked appropriate. My poor dear sister had to play Mary with the little darling baby and we'd stand there and sing Christmas carols and the neighbors would come in the front door

stand on the step out there with the front door open middle of winter. And that was our gift as a family to the neighbors for Christmas and Christmas tree was a masterpiece every year drilling holes and sticking branches until we discovered how my uncle he would get the biggest haul us with the spaces of all the spaces out and pay them back together and have the most perfect Christmas tree you could ever find. It was make your own tree. And most people just had kind of a scrubby tree and put a lot of tinsel hanging tinsel and stuff. Christmas was very special because that involved first of all Trinity Lutheran. Was a wonderful church for many people the church of the North Side. St. James was a Catholic and Trinity was the Lutheran so Christmas and fishing had tried to have these cottage or the two memories that still live very much with me deep in my heart.

You said that your your uncle worked at the brewery. Was there a brewery on the north side or was it just it was just the Highland girls haven and was there was there any small breweries on the north side that you recall those days.

Ol La Crosse Beer song. I've never heard that before. Well it disappeared many years ago.

That used to be the liquor was drinking beer so any parting words fell anything that you want to share that I know that I had maybe didn't ask.

No I've enjoyed sharing memories of the north side with you and with the people who choose to listen to the things I have to say. It's all done from me in love for the north side and my experiences and growing up there.

  • E6 Masters Services Chimney Chad why inspect inventor clean burn
What things are you looking for in a chimney when you go and make making an inspection chimney Chad cracks and chimney invader's cracks.

Or are the issue. Does your lining crack up to your smoke shelf above your damper crack up did your damper stop working correctly. No. Are there cracks near back wall sidewalls. Does your Lindvall did it come loose to wear behind the opening of the fireplace that goes up through the wall. Is that sealed properly. That's some of the major parts of why you would want to have it should be inspected.

Now when you say that you know the cracking of things I know there's such a thing as a chimney liner to the chimney liners end up helping out Jimmy liners.

Absolutely. Parko to have a good chimney liner chimney liner can also just be realigned with mortar fire fireplace refractory. He resists and more which is the kind of which is the kind of relining that Master Services does.

Okay what about chimney caps. Sometimes you notice that some people have chimney caps other people don't. Are those something that people should have.

You have a prefabricated fireplace. They all have chimney caps as part of code as part of building. If you have a masonry built style chimney it is not code to have one but highly recommended because water damage is water. What causes damages to the mortar joints in the brickwork inside the fireplace flue.

Now I know that the chair that you're in inv. that you came up with a new product that will help maybe revolutionize the whole fireplace industry.

I invented breakdown. Great a little more decorative to the homeowner but more importantly I designed it for the chimney sweep so that he could break it down and carry in his truck and knocking it all scratched up or be hurt when he's riding in the back with van or truck. So what is the purpose of having a great great creates all the airflow underneath fire to have a good controlled fire going in your fireplace.

We've all been to different places where somebody is trying to start a fire and they're dropping a few four letter words. Smoke is roll back him. Is there is there a proper way to actually get that fire lit and not have the issues of you know the smoke detectors going off like like your grandma's doing some bacon again.

Well obviously there is a learning curve whenever you move into a new house or how you're going to start your fire. I mean there are people who have no gas pipes and there they have holes in it. Start the Fire with gas. I always recommend if you don't have to use a firestarter Barik they come there just little 3 or 4 inch breaks that you can put in underneath the fire or underneath the wood and light those and they'll light up the fire pretty good fairly quickly. But if you're having smoke coming out of the house that's a whole nother issue that may not have nothing to do with how you're starting your fire.

Is that an issue that that master's services can help me with Chad.

Well thanks for asking Bob it is a very big issue in the industry because a lot of people don't know their fireplace and there are so many things gimmee learned by having us show up to where we can show you the best way to light your fire. Now we will not light a fire in your house due to liability reasons but we can tell you how the best way to light a fire in your houses and generally generally it's making sure that your damper is open. We won't know if your fireplace works and if it smokes until you've actually had a fire there's no. Unless there's obvious things that the fireplace was built incorrectly which you can have a perfectly good fireplace and chimney that doesn't burn correctly so you could put a perfect fireplace inside of a monster room and the air pressure in that room isn't pushing up against the back wall to create a raft going up the fireplace. So there are many things that can be done after Markoe ways are different ways to start fires to get it to draft a lot of times you'll realize the smoking issue is only the beginning until the pressure of the House and the and the pressure outside is pulling in the pressure inside pushing that once it's created smoke will stay in firebox and go out the chimney when you first start to fire. Like many people will start the fire too close to the opening of the fireplace not towards the back wall. Well the smoke is just going to go to the point of least resistance so plenaries resistance might be coming into the room because they have the fire to close or they might

be having too much wood to start the fire creating too much smoke for the chimney to handle and then boom you guess its drafting well. But it's also coming into the into the house because you're having to build a fire for that firebox.

  • E2 Chris Jones 1 Word Balance
Chris Jones and the one word podcast, what have you learned when it comes to being on the road. Chris is a lot of learning pretty emotional, learning how so? Like my great call. When I had to cancel Thursday, I told you. Regardless of the longer I'm not feeling well and there like okay but you're still flying to do the next three cells while the port so and unlike I'll be completely transparent on a flight go on the road for a full week away from family and friends. I got some of the most depressing thing I don't be in North Dakota five days alone moves next week and you like but a success of fly out there. I hear you like them and others is is like I have to do something for TV in New York on Friday and you can't fly from North Dakota to be in New York by 8 AM weekend. We had only three days beforehand right exactly when it comes to being on the road in dealing with, you know, being away from friends and family and things like that how you work with the work like balance salt something always falls me. I think that I have little gauges like if I don't have enough photos of my fiancé and I gather there's something wrong if I don't have time to walk the dogs. I get sick or like if I'm in pretty good shape physically. I have no money because I mean I'm waking up after eight hours of sleep. I'm working out, eating well and on access to. I'm sleeping well but have like you got another bank account. I like okay I'm I'm gaining weight now is hard to come up with the monetization of what it is that you love doing. I could guess because I mean I don't know if you're like me, I will talk to you for free but you people still need to take time away from family, you still need to pay mortgage rent. So like I what I can feel free if a court or charity or something fun like that. But you still need to get paid yourself honestly because the other day. You reach out to me and asked me if I would talk to but is yours to work on a podcast and my first thought was absolutely other for you for nothing. So first love that I had right and I talked and talked to my wife about it. She's like Bob's, what you do for living. I'm like oh yeah I forgot right record and build momentum. According must you want me to also less about me there's a yes and we got some good stuff so far. Like regular question about your character, but will you know you generally get this way when it whenever I call the record and that if you want me about something in there, I'll cut it out. You know you know me, I would like you maybe keep your 21 for me. I have to ask you, how are you doing to me about your boy right but which one I got three smart is poisonous. Marta's daughter. So I leave the apple doesn't fall far from the tree was our top work that well one word today is is balance over talk and work life and you know just just the word balance. You have good balance sometimes is not an answer. I mean, I had to have a good candidate for show. The heart of the conflict. They say I need your help. I can't do a show on the would you mind rescheduling and then I could cut through some type of deal just to keep it professional and be thoughtful. So instead of give me the usual Steve take off $200 I will bring free T-shirts to the show schemes followed by dessert like live cookies together. I just can't do the state. Would you mind rescheduling Courtney Franklin agents and they're usually disappointed because they don't care what I am quick in the day off, but if I move it dates. That means I'm not working on that day when they don't get paid and potential other work that you're exactly right in the next days of looking at it is to change a chow man cyclist returning something to the mall you know your point care. You see yourself as a celebrity. Chris know. I mean, I'm famous for maybe 69 he landed farm on stage. I get on stage one photograph that I can go to a restaurant or bar unless people go for the show to that Apple be I will not recognize that's fun, but I would not like being in a restaurant and getting a headache publicly like I enjoy my food. I want to finish even like language a photo but I don't have a situation you got me show on Facebook on Facebook. TV was called faithful TV watch Facebook watch and that's called double take. I over the weekend last weekend. Watched all six episodes. Those are fantastically talking about people that recognize people every one of those guess you had are people that people come up to and say hey, aren't you fill in the blank. And did you have the opportunity to talk to them about their celebrity well really like but it's nice that you want to send it. Had a good meeting of YM light on. Sorry I haven't got great America. Talented Howie Mandel to Freddie Jerry I promise it's real you actors so just know, whatever you see will be real ducting or Pamela Anderson. I know what you expect but she was still gorgeous. She was super sweet super self-deprecating like every joke with about her and I like wanted to give her a hug at school. Steve always was an instant character is real interesting. He seemed like you sent out after watching that one. I just when he would. You yelled at the pots and steel pots on the ground is actually my favorite part about episode. I am sure that you guys in the back along one of the hell is he doing yeah I don't know the legal or or whoever like black glasses is just. Slowly rocketry to collect data about this level at Bob. We had a glowing unscrew and I out. I represent up to heaven for your fan and light it like how wives goes crazy. That's really not good through key. You scribbled your scrotum to your leg glass with. I'm on my keep up you so we can do this together it'll be great. And I will have a bit of a site. Yeah, that's not a good idea, but he did hit in the crotch but you have to hit me in the crotch is Restivo IRA: nine but he didn't make any show that your voice is a high right didn't expect this is Christian so the show. The show is called double take is on Facebook watch can anybody watch it at any time or is it does for a limited run only right don't know I just know that they are great episode. Plus the fussy and my dad who doesn't have Facebook at all the like will how do I want to watch that they'll put on each know Facebook is doing their own streaming service with not on each sheet. Yet unlike what you like to watch a show on 100 TV ratings, but the okay to have dinner. Here's watch them all the way through. I couldn't what I think the 12 support episode is pretty digestible. I think the editing job and make them short sweet and to the point is not a lot of fat on lean episodes about when he comes to balancing and work life with you. I again I think we go spiritual sometimes and I went to religious school and we dissect like the first three commandments there kinda been 3% of the first three is your relationship with God, so respect. The Sabbath don't use the name of the Lord in vain and then a ghostly relationship with your family on a mother and father, and then it goes to your community shouldn't kill shouldn't steel bear false witness. You start with your your your balance with your creator in your household and with the larger world. I think I should not be working six days a week and only having Sunday to relax balance and now taking time to read a book for leisure and turning off the TV. That's really important that I get to my Sheldon. I'm just so upset with the politics are going up. Get this done so anger is yelled like no gay marriage, but that that would destroy America. My dad was in college you have interracial marriage that would Projected that will destroy America recognize the privilege that we have right now like we should go forward and not go back to when women couldn't vote or Asian Americans can vote and wearing Japanese detention centers like arts user money for something good balance every breeze. That's all one word please Jones podcast
