In today’s episode John talks about his upbringing, his time as an RAF pilot, Corporate flying in Europe in the 60’s, and most importantly, what it took to get selected to the elite group who got to fly Concorde. Over the next few days, make sure you’re subscribed so you don’t miss Wednesday’s episode where John recounts his narrow escape from a burning 707 at Heathrow. Or on Thursday where we hear about becoming a BBC broadcaster and Concorde pilot, personally known to the Royal Family, and Most importantly on Friday where we hear the true story of the Air France 4590 Crash.
Welcome to Concorde Week.
Today, we’re going to get into a really serious topic. What it’s like to actually experience a powerplant failure in flight!

Today we’re going to pick apart a couple of Cirrus crashes, but not just any cirrus crashes. These are serious fatal accidents. In each case, the accident aircraft had a pilot plus 2 passengers. And the reason Max and I are talking about these In particular, is because ATC played an interesting part in each one. Not necessarily a causal one, as we’ll see from the NTSB reports, but the interactions with ATC were key in one way or another in the events leading up to the occurrence. And that’s, of course, where our worlds overlap!
Max Trescott is a fulltime flight instructor. He started flying at age 15 and finished his pilot certificate in college. He has degrees in Electrical Engineering, Psychology, and a MBA. He spent 25 years working in sales and marketing for Hewlett-Packard.
In 2004 he left HP and he now devotes full time to teaching flying, writing, and giving speeches and seminars. He’s written two books, including Max Trescott’s G1000 Glass Cockpit Handbook, now in its fifth edition. He holds an ATP certificate for all four airplane categories.
Max specializes in teaching in Cirrus Aircraft and a week ago he finished his type-rated in the Cirrus SF50 Vision Jet. In 2008, he was named by the FAA as the National Certificated Flight Instructor of the Year to represent the 96,000 flight instructors in the U.S.
He has a weekly podcast focused on General Aviation in which he shares GA news from around the world plus pilot skills and safety tips. The show is Aviation News Talk, and you can find it in the Apple App store and Google Play Store or wherever you get your podcasts.

Welcome to Podcasting on a plane, I’m Brandon Gonzales, and today we’re “Hanging on the airside” with someone you may know. Well, if you’re active at all on social media, Like instagram in particular, you’ll know her photography for sure, that’s right, I’m talking about the always fun, always present, and always writing, the one and only JenNiffer https://talesfromtheterminal.com is here! She’s going to tell us all about what fuels her unwavering passion for anything that flies, and what keeps her motivated to write about it.
But first, I always want to start, by giving some gratitude where it’s due. And I’m of course talking about those who’ve made a contribution to the show, be it through Patreon https://www.patreon.com/podcastingonaplane , or through helping out with content, comments, feedback, whatever. It is all very much appreciated, and I thank you all.
When I was on my trip a few weeks ago, I got a real surprise from a new friend of the show, so before we do anything else, it’s time to give an extra special Shoutout to my man N5449P. He made a very generous donation to the show. He says it gave him something to listen to while he was in Challenger school. Well, Alright glad we could help. And I saw him the other day, out using that Challenger type all right, and it looked like a lot of fun. So, If you’re ever out there and you hear 49P on frequency, make sure to pass along a nice hello from me.
And I want to welcome a new show Patron, you all know this name, It’s Anthony Tamburrini. He’s been on the show twice, and now he’s a patron too. Pretty awesome. He actually came into my airport the other day, and flew a really nice ILS down to a perfect touchdown. I don’t have the audio, but he gave a nice VHF shoutout too, it was pretty fun. https://www.patreon.com/podcastingonaplane
And another community member, This guy…
That’s right, community Member Steven Andress. He sent me an email and connected the dots that he was the mystery Alaska pilot who always says Hi on the way down to Mexico. Pretty cool. And as it turns out, His daughter Stephanie is entertaining the idea of becoming an Air Traffic Controller. So I was happy to put together a facility visit for the two of them and, hopefully they liked what they saw.
And last but not least, Hotel Mike used a new feature called https://www.buymeacoffee.com/BravoGolf . And I’m not sure if it’s the same hotel mike who sent in the feedback from last time, but if so, a pleasant thank you, and I Hope the technique worked for you and please, record a follow up! I’d love to hear about your flight review. Not just the landing part, but all of it!

That’s right, the one and only
Jen Niffer interview
You can send me a recorded message right from the website, using the SpeakPipe widget, and it even works on your phone. Or as always you can send me an email, or message me on instagram, twitter, or facebook too. make sure to follow along on instagram using the hashtag #podcastingonaplane, as well as liking the facebook page and, our twitter @handle is @podcastonaplane. On today’s show, safety reporting programs, what they are. What they’re for. And what they’re not for.
If you’re an experienced aviator, I’m guessing you’ve made a fair few NASA ASRS submissions, and if you’re new to this, well, today we’re talking about a safety reporting system that makes an incredible difference in how aviation in this country evolves. And as an incentive to participate, you may, in fact, be granted immunity in the case of certain regulatory offenses.

Remember last time how we talked about how the whole privatization battle was more or less over for the time being, but that it’ll be back again sooner or later... well literally minutes before I sat down to record this episode, I got a Tweet from my friend Rob over at Flying Magazine and he just wrote a little piece about how ATC reform is still very much something that’s in the White House’s plan.
