    The Great Transition & Eternity
    Chapters 19-22 cover a lot of ground, but there are two major things going on here. Jesus Himself is on earth to put an end to the wickedness and transition earth into His eternal kingdom.

    The End

    * Jesus now meets the armies of the Antichrist in Jerusalem
    * Casts the antichrist and false prophet into the lake of fire (hell)
    * Personally kills all the rest of the rebellious army & allies
    * Buzzards will literally eat the rotting flesh of the dead

    Millennium

    * This is one of the most contested passages in Revelation
    * Many ways to look at this 1,000 years
    * Details are sparse
    * I hold to a “pre-millennial” position—Jesus returns before the millennium begin
    * Satan is bound in the bottomless pit

    Satanic Rebellion 2.0

    * Satan is released
    * Deceives the nations
    * Dispels the lie that if we saw God, we would believe & follow Him
    * God now judges all—up until now the only two in hell are the antichrist and false prophet
    * Entrance into eternity is allegiance to Jesus

    The New Heaven & Earth

    * Another contested point—is earth destroyed and replaced or refurbished?
    * Earth and the New Jerusalem is our eternal home, not “heaven”
    * If on earth today, this Jerusalem would reach far into space
    * God honors the twelve tribes and the twelve apostles in its construction—the conclusion of His two great covenants
    * No sun, moon or stars—God and Jesus themselves provide light

    In The Beginning

    * When God created Adam and Eve, He gave them a tree of life and rivers
    * We again find the tree of life and a river of life
    * Forever we will live face to face with God on earth

    John’s Warning

    * Do not attempt to rewrite or unwrite Revelation
    * This does not mean wrong interpretations will destine you to hell
    * Does not include any other books of the Bible—specific to Revelation

    Conclusion
    We often speak about belief in Jesus being the measure of a Christian, but Revelation allows us to see things much differently. Demons believe in Him. The wicked and rebellious people of earth see and believe in Him throughout the end times. Revelation gives us an understanding that Jesus requires our allegiance. There is an invisible war going on today, and it will only be made manifest in the end times, that war between God and Satan, their two armies colliding.
    We must choose a side. Belief is not enough—our entire heart is what God is after. Many will believe in Jesus but turn away to follow the Antichrist. Our call is to stay faithful to Jesus and Him alone, even if it means death.
    Today we can choose allegiance to Jesus. It is our only hope of salvation today as it will be in these coming last days.

    Up until now, things in Revelation have just happened with little explanation of why. Through some context we have been able to pick up that God is judging only the wicked of the earth, but we are still left with more questions than answers. The next section of Revelation gives us the why behind what has been going on before the tribulation began.
    The why is Babylon
    The Harlot & The Beast

    * John sees a vision of the harlot. This is brand new information very late in Revelation
    * This is going to explain why the things that have taken place have happened
    * The woman is sitting on a beast and she is drunk on the blood of martyred saints. She is bad news.
    * She is a mystery

    The Beast

    * The beast is the Antichrist, the beast who came from the earth. He died and rose to life again.
    * Only those who have the mark of the beast will find him intriguing.
    * God’s people will not be fooled by him. We will know him for sure.
    * The Antichrist will destroy the woman—God will use him as retribution against Babylon’s atrocities against His saints
    * Jesus will overcome him!

    The Woman

    * Seven mountains – some have said this must be Rome because of Rome’s seven hills
    * Possibly Rome, but more likely a conglomeration of seven nations who ally with her much like the Beast’s allied nations
    * She is more than likely a system of rule presided over by a single city.
    * System & City
    * Don’t bet against Revelation—could literally be Babylon

    Why Babylon?

    * Where idolatry began
    * Where mankind turned away from God after the flood

    Babylon’s Fall

    * Chapter 18-19:10 is broken into four parts: Babylon’s Judgment, Babylon’s Lament and Babylon’s Destruction/Finality, Heaven’s Rejoicing Over Babylon
    * We learn why Babylon is a central point of the end times in verses 1-8
    * In 9-20 we see how Babylon had bewitched the earth
    * In 21-24 we understand that this is the end of Babylon.
    * In 19:1-10, heaven rejoices over Babylon’s destruction.

    Heaven doesn’t rejoice over any other destruction: not the antichrist, the beast or the false prophet. Not Satan or any other being is rejoiced over in their destruction. Babylon stands alone in this—and that is why it is central to Revelation. That is why it is so important to understand when it comes to this book. Babylon is the “why” behind Revelation.

  • Week 8: Revelation 15-16

    We ended chapter 14 on a very sobering note. We are told that there is coming a “winepress of God’s wrath.” Chapters 15-16 will show us a little of what is to come, because we now enter the fullness of God’s wrath against those on earth who have rejected His Son and persecuted and killed His beloved bride.
    The Chorus of Heaven

    * We need to pay attention when heaven erupts into song
    * God is JUST in all that He does
    * Only God is holy—no one else, not even the saints
    * All the saints are deserving of the same fate if it weren’t for Jesus’ blood

    The Temple

    * The angels come out with their bowls of the wrath of God
    * Like Solomon’s Temple, here again we have smoke that prevents the normal operation within
    * This is a holy moment in heaven—God is unapproachable until the bowls of wrath are complete. He will not be bargained with at this point.

    First Bowl

    * Painful sores—these will persist throughout the bowl judgments

    Second Bowl

    * Sea turned to blood—everything left dies
    * The seals and trumpets dealt in fourths and thirds. The bowls are now absolute and complete.

    Third Bowl

    * Fresh water turned to blood—now all the water on earth is undrinkable. Where does anyone get drinking water now?
    * This judgment is so harsh that the angel stops for a moment and acknowledges that God is righteous in what He is doing. It is vindication for the blood of the saints.

    Fourth Bowl

    * Scorching heat—the people of earth know that God is doing this and they hate Him all the more for it. The judgments are magnifying what is truly in their hearts.
    * Here again is vindication—we see in Revelation 7:16 That many saints were held in scorching heat, exposed to the sun, during the tribulation.

    Fifth Bowl

    * Somehow darkness now falls on the kingdom of the beast. The darkness causes them all to stop and have to live with nothing but the torment of their painful sores and scorched bodies.

    Sixth Bowl

    * Like when the Persians conquered Babylon, again the Euphrates will be dry for the armies of Satan to try to conquer.
    * The demonic frogs will gather the kings of the earth for war against Jesus Himself!
    * By this point, the people of earth are so used to supernatural events that these prophetic frogs are obviously not enough to cause anyone to think twice about their involvement!
    * Jesus Himself gives one final warning here—He is about to come, like He said, as a thief in the night to those who do not know Him. He promised us that for those who know Him, He will not come as a thief (1 Thessalonians 5:4-5)

    Seventh Bowl

    * Planet earth is shaken so that all the cities of the earth collapse.
    * What is curious is that the earthquakes are not what the people of earth find the most egregious—it is the hail
    * For some perspective, each hailstone will be about the size of a large living room sofa. The world has never seen such a thing.
    * The people of earth will with their last breath curse God one more time. What comes next for them is the winepress of God’s wrath as we have seen before

  • Week 7: Revelation 12-14
    Last week we talked about how God is going to provide prophetic revelation and guidance during the time of the great tribulation. This week we get into the meat of Revelation’s symbolism and grit.

    There is are too many symbols to go through during a podcast, but they are dealt with at length in the book, Revelation: a 10 Week Bible Study. I encourage you to get the book and go through it as you read Revelation.
    Instead, here I want to deal with some of the higher level things that are taking place in this passage. We are in another parenthetical section that delves into the conflict between God and Satan that will play out on earth with devastating consequences.
    Putting Revelation Into Perspective
    Before we begin, we need to understand a little better what this great tribulation period really is, and for that we turn to Matthew.
    15 “Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand), 16 “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. 18 And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. 19 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.
    Matthew 24: 15-22

    From Daniel and Revelation, we understand that this time of great tribulation will be 3-1/2 years, beginning precisely at this moment of the “abomination of desolation.” This is an event that will take place within the new temple established in Jerusalem. Many commentators believe the phrase “let him understand” is a reference to Antiochus IV Epiphanes who did just what this passage speaks of in the past as of Jesus’ quote. Jesus was referencing Antiochus’ defiling of the temple as a foreshadow of a yet to come future event. And that brings us to chapter 12.
    The Great Conflict

    * John sees a sign in heaven—literally an astronomical even that he understands to have meaning.
    * The Woman—we can understand that she is Mary, or figuratively, Israel. She would give birth to the Messiah, Jesus.
    * The Dragon—This is satan, and here we will see him once and for all cast out of heaven. This did not happen at the moment of Jesus’ death on the cross, but likely sometime within the period just before the great tribulation begins. He is on earth before the last 3-1/2 years take place (1,260 days).
    * War in heaven—we must understand that angels are not like God. He speaks and people are destroyed. These angels are caught in a very real battle, much like the one we see in Daniel 10:13. Much like this passage in Daniel, the archangel Michael wins the decisive battle and Satan is cast out of heaven once and for all.
    * The song—Once and for all, our accuser no longer has a place to stand before God and accuse Him and us, like we see in Job. Forever we are now free of his accusations, but the earth will feel his wrath because of his fury.
    * Satan will try to destroy the “woman.” This brings us back to the passage in Matthew 24. All this coincides with the abomination of desolation and Jesus specifically tells the Jews living in Jerusalem to flee as fast as they can.
    * God will protect many Jews during this time supernaturally, as we have already seen earlier in Revelation. Now Satan turns his great anger against God’s people, the Christians as we will see in chapter 13.

    Chapter 13 is where we see the two beasts, often referred to as the Antichrist and the False Prophet.

  • Week 6: Revelation 10-11

    Last time we ended with the blowing of the sixth trumpet, and now we will take another break from the action to be given more background information. This is the second parenthetical section of Revelation and it will set up the majesty that is the seventh trumpet.
    This section of Revelation will show us that God fully intends to speak to His people prophetically during the tribulation period. God will not leave His people in the dark during the darkest days of history, but He will speak to us and give us direction when we need it the most.
    The Seven Thunders

    * This angel carries great authority, and looks physically different

    * Stands on the sea and the land
    * Announces that the seventh trumpet ushers in something important
    * They mystery of God will be revealed at the seventh trumpet

    The Seven Thunders

    * No accident John heard this
    * There is more to be revealed in the end times

    The Scroll

    * Just like Ezekiel’s scroll from Ezekiel 3:1-3
    * Tastes sweet but turns their stomachs sour
    * Represents the reality of prophecy: sweet to hear from God, but difficult to bear up under the weight of it when confronting people—prophecy is truly a bittersweet reality of God’s kingdom

    The Two Witnesses

    * Is it a real or figurative temple?
    * John is asked to measure it, which makes it seem like it will be real
    * 42 months & 1,260 days—first reference in Revelation matches Daniel’s 3-1/2 years—the last half of the Great Tribulation
    * They have great power and authority. They are divinely protected
    * The Beast (have not yet been introduced to him) will kill them at the end of 3-1/2 years
    * Sodom and Egypt? Why is Jerusalem called this?
    * Great rejoicing over their death
    * Resurrected as everyone watches their ascension to heaven

    Seventh Trumpet

    * The earth is becoming God’s kingdom forever
    * God is going to “begin to reign” now that the seventh trumpet has been sounded
    * Time to judge the dead and reward the prophets
    * Destroy those who have destroyed the earth with their sinfulness
    * Paul speaks about this event in 1 Corinthians 15:52:

    51Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— 52in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
    This is the moment that God will rapture His beloved bride—we will indeed be “caught up” (in Latin, “rapio”, or “rapture”) as Paul also calls it in 1 Thessalonians 4:17.
    We will see that as soon as Jesus’ bride is raptured (taken away, “caught up”), God will now pour out His wrath on earth and make it His own. The Seventh Trumpet brings to a close the 1,260 days of the Great Tribulation, and now this “mystery of God” will be revealed.
