  • Introduction To Revelation

    * Purpose of Studying Revelation

    Read Revelation 1:1-3 – we are blessed by simply reading the words in this book. No other book in the Bible offers such a direct command.We want to study Revelation right. The “right” way to study it isn’t to gain a great depth of knowledge or to have thoughtful theological insights. We study rightly when we choose to engage the God of eternity with His own scriptures and come to know Him better, to experience Him more, and to love Him more deeply.
    * Difficulties Studying Revelation

    * Fear of the unknown

    * Many people choose not to study Revelation because they fear they’ll get into all sorts of weirdness from various teachings–God is coming back on November 15, 2017

    –The 144,000 are the ones that God really likes and you have to work hard to make it into that group

    –etc.
    * Others choose not to study it because they’re intimidated by all they symbolism and figurative language–The dragon

    –The harlot Babylon

    –7 thunders

    –7 lampstands
    * Others are fearful of thinking about all the destruction and death that will occur–1/4 of the earth dies

    –1/3 of the earth dies

    –Everyone else dies

    –Pretty much, almost everyone in Revelation dies in the endThe newsflash here is that everyone dies. It is the reason for the death and destruction that we must understand. We study Revelation to understand the reason for all the destruction.
    * Some are intimidated by the God they meet for the first time in Revelation. He seems more like the “vengeful, wrathful” God of the Old Testament, not the one they feel have been taught about from the New Testament.

    * Most people today have been sold a Jesus and a God that historical Christianity has not believed in.

    * God has always been our judge. This isn’t a bad thing—it is a very good thing. Revelation is mostly about God judging the world for its treatment of His Son and its treatment of His people, we the believers.
    * In Revelation, God will once and for all make good on His word, “Vengeance is Mine,” He will enact vengeance upon the world on our behalf. His wrath will be poured out for us, not against us.
    * We must not think of God as two beings: the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New. He is the same throughout both, and we will see how that comes together in the book of Revelation

    * Overview of Revelation

    * We will study the book for 10 weeks, broken down by the sections listed in your books
    * The major sections we will see are:

    * The purpose for writing (1)
    * The letters to the 7 churches (2-3)
    * The heavenly throne room (4-5)
    * The seal judgments (6)
    * The trumpet judgments (8)
    * The bowl judgments (15-16)
    * The parentheticals of power, protection and triumph (7, 9, 10-14)
    * Babylon’s centrality (17-19:10)
    * Eternity (19:11-22)

    * The major themes we will discuss:

    * The churches
    * The heavenly world
    * The judgment of God
    * Babylon
    * God’s Divine Protection
    * God’s Divine Provision
    * Heaven on earth

  • Politics and King Rehoboam: Episode #12

    Sometimes God operates in funny ways. If you’ve followed me for very long, you know that I won’t take sides on the Calvinism/Arminianism debate. God is sovereign, but we also make choices. How those two work together are a mystery to me beyond understanding. I think it’s supposed to be that way, honestly. So what […]

    So what does that have to do with politics? Or King Rehoboam?
    Read 1 Kings 12. Rehoboam made a terrible decision. So bad, that anyone with hindsight can see it. How did the son of the man who penned most of Proverbs make such a terrible decision? Simply put, God made him do it.
    Rehoboam was in over his head just for being in the middle of leading Israel. And that is where most American politicians find themselves today. They aren’t the all-powerful men and women who act as thought they wield total control over our nation. No, they are pawns in God’s chess match.
    He calls the shots, and they fall in line. Whether they know it or not.
    The takeaway from this is that our nation’s direction is not at the whim of our politicians. It is actually firmly within the reach of the church. God will respond to His people if they will humble themselves and pray. He will respond by giving us leaders who will direct our nation back into righteousness, but it must start with the church.
    Have a listen today and leave your thoughts in the comments.

  • How Politics Really Work: Episode 10
    Today on the podcast: how do politics work? Do we elect our officials or does God put them in place?
    Do we get to choose who we elect?
    It all depends on how you look at it.
    Paul tells us in Romans 13:1 that God has ordained and appointed all governmental leaders. That means that He is the one calling the shots. He is the one who votes. In fact, He is the only one who votes.
    That doesn’t make us powerless and it certainly doesn’t mean we shouldn’t vote or take part in the democratic process. It means that as believers, we should take our charge all the more seriously.
    We must remember that politicians have never been nor will ever provide the answers or healing our nation needs. They are, however, often the chosen vessel the Lord uses in orchestrating His plan for nations. We see just how clearly The Lord uses them when we look at Rehoboam in 1 Kings 12.
    Here we find that Rehoboam was “set up” by God to fail to bring about the prophetic Word of God given to Solomon his father. Rehoboam was spurred on by God to make a total mess of his kingdom.
    We find this same kind of thing in 2 Samuel 24 and 1 Chronicles 21 where David called for a census of his fighting men. The accounts are parallel, looking at two aspects of the same story. One thing is clear from Samuel: God was angry with the Israelites and had determined to judge them. Why? We don’t know, but it was established.
    God’s chosen vessel to bring about that judgment was David. God allowed Satan to entice David to sin and bring about the national shame that God had already seen in Israel’s people.
    I’ll discuss this more in a future article, but David’s actions reflected God’s setup of him as a political leader. When we place ourselves in positions of power and authority, we open ourselves up as vessels to be used by God in a greater measure for good or bad, depending on God’s will for a nation.
    Today, we like to blame our politicians for making stupid decisions all the time. But are their decisions stupid because they’re bad leaders, or because God has “set them up” to fail because of our sin as a nation?
    I don’t hear many people asking that question because that turns things back on us…
