(Airdate: July 29, 2026) Today we are speaking with Dr. Eric Wagner about his book Seabirds as Sentinels. The Pacific coast—often called the “Blue Serengeti”—is one of the most productive ecosystems on earth and an important region for seabird research. The book’s central theme is that seabirds serve as sentinels, or early-warning indicators, of the health of our marine ecosystems. Wagner takes us to two nearby islands; Protection and Destruction as we travel into auklet burrows under the cover of night.

(Airdate: July 28, 2026) Despite the daily arrival of a few hundred day trippers, the one thing that hasn’t changed is that the slopes surrounding Heavenly Lake are still home to the Kazakhs, who’ve been grazing their sheep here for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. To supplement their income they rent out yurts to the handful of visitors who stay past sundown…

The city apparently does not know where each and every one of the potholes are and needs our help in reporting them. You can do your part by going to https://cityofpt.us/publicworks/page/report-concern-inquiry. (Note, if this link appears to invalid, that is, lined through, ignore that – it still works!)

(Airdate: July 21, 2026) Maryanne interviews Apple Martine, director of Jefferson County Public Health. Her parents were into what is usually called an alternative lifestyle. But Apple discovered a passion for learning. Her first degree was in zoology. Somehow that led her to healthcare and more specifically nursing. Many of us first became aware of our Public Health Department during the pandemic. But it does much more. Their underlying mission is to protect human life. The Health Department can literally close down restaurants that are not up to code. Also, as there is no Planned Parenthood office in Jefferson County, the Public Health Department helps bridge that gap. Lately, working with the “unhoused” has been a major priority.

(Airdate: July 21, 2026) When the Chinese first noticed the Kazakhs, they were part of the confederation of tribes known as the Wusun. That was two thousand years ago. Over the succeeding centuries the Wusun confederation mingled with other nomad groups, including the Turks, the Uyghurs and the Mongols.
