It's a fall night in the city. The date is October 22nd, 2000. The location: Yankee Stadium, the Bronx, New York. Approximately 8:30 PM local. It's game 2 of the World Series between two hometown teams, the formidable New York Yankees, and the underdog New York Metropolitans. In the top half of the 1st inning, Yankees hurler Roger Clemens is ahead of the Mets star catcher Mike Piazza, a 1-2 count. Clemens goes inside, Piazza chokes up a bit, causing the bat to erupt into several pieces while the ball heads sharply foul. The largest chunk heads straight to the mound, right to the feet of Clemens. What happens next might surprise you. Clemens grabs the jagged piece of wood and hurls it right at the ever alert Piazza, narrowly missing him. Benches clear. Confusion sets in. Was it emotions spilling over from the tense 12 inning affair the night before? Was it roid rage? We'll never know, but one thing is for certain. This is the Subway Series at it's finest. And one day in the not so distant future, a sandwich shop from Wallingford, Connecticut will channel all of this emotion, fury, and bewilderment into a line of submarine sandwiches, the likes of which the denizens of planet earth will never see coming. The Beast, The Monster, Titan Turkey, The Hotshot Italiano, one day these names will stand beside Piazza, Clemens, DeGrom, Rivera, and Captain Clutch as coming to define The Subway Series, in all of it's permutations and glory.
