Poditive Spin: The Friendly Fan Club

It's been ten years since moviegoing audiences returned to Middle-Earth for the first instalment of The Hobbit trilogy, itself debuting almost a decade after the commercial, critical, and cultural phenomenon that was The Lord of the Rings.

Director Peter Jackson and many of the same creative team returned to take on the tale of Bilbo Baggins, the Company of Dwarves, and the quest to reclaim a lost kingdom from the dragon Smaug. Whilst this follow-up enjoyed reasonable box office success, critics and audiences agreed that it struggled to shine beneath the shadow of its forebear.

The Friendly Fan Club sets out on an adventure to recover the forgotten treasures of these films, beginning with a deep-dive into The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Fame is a fickle friend. One moment you're a pro-wrestler, or a singer, or a footballer. Next, you're starring in blockbusters and Oscar-winners. Inspired by the recent Harry Styles Don't Worry Darling drama (and the upcoming release of Dwayne - The Rock - Johnson's Black Adam, the Friendly Fan Club picks through famous faces whose success stories began well before the silver screen.

Also, we celebrate the comeback of a 90s Hollywood legend, and give our thoughts on the first half of Season 1 of Amazon's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

It's been seventeen years since the world witnessed the rise of the Galactic Empire, the purging of the Jedi, and Anakin Skywalker donning the infamous black helmet. Now, an untold chapter of Obi-Wan Kenobi's story - his years in exile - has arrived on Disney+.

The Friendly Fan Club is all too eager to take its first in-depth journey to a galaxy far far away to discuss this latest offering from the Star Wars saga.

A game-changing mid-90s blockbuster that spawned a franchise spanning six movies over nearly three decades...and yet all the rest have not been received anywhere near as positively as the original? That's, that's chaos theory, and that's the focus of this latest Poditive Spin where we return to the wilds of Isla Nublar (aka. 'Site B').

The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III saw lukewarm reactions at best from audiences and critics, neither seen as being able to step out from under the gargantuan shadow of Steven Spielberg's dino disaster movie. But the Friendly Fan Club finds a way - as ever - to dig up the positives, even from what is generally considered to be 'one big pile of s***'.

The Friendly Fan Club ventures gently into that good night to explore the astronomical questions of Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. Does it buckle under the weight of its own ambition to realistically capture mind-bending inter-dimensional concepts, or is it saved by its director's uncharacteristic sentimentality?

Also, we provide our own takes on the 'Slapgate' controversy from the 2022 Academy Awards (because of course we must).
