Welcome, welcome to Pod Guide, a bite-sized dose of pod knowledge from me, Ginni Media’s Ginni-in-Chief. 

To honor our very first episode of Pod Guide, it only makes sense that we should start at the beginning!

As a renowned podcaster myself, I’m always grateful for the trailblazers of this relatively new entertrainment source—but have you ever wondered who did it first? 

According to many, journalist Christopher Lydon’s “Open Source” was the world’s very first podcast.

Beginning in 2003 as an RSS feed of audio files out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Lydon, along with his co-creators, had a vision of using MP3s to record a syndicated show. They came up with the idea in response to what they saw as the frustrating monotony of mainstream media. 

According to producer Mary McGrath, the team, “...thought that the internet could erase the limitations of radio.”

Hmmm… is it possible our girl Mary was also a bit of a podcast psychic?

“Open Source” can still be heard on air today, making it not only the first podcast, but the world’s oldest active podcast, too.

Welcome to the best and most entertaining pod news source on this side of the Milky Way! I’m Ginni, and have I got news for you:

Last Tuesday was International Women’s Day…whoop whoop! 

[Sound of a female saying something with big attitude, like “Oh, you go girl!!!” or “Get it, girl!”] 

So that begs the question, what ARE women listening to? A recent survey from Triton Digital shows that there’s a clear winner among podcast categories. And the winner is……

Truuuuueeee Crime!!! 

Women are tuning in weekly to podcasts like Crime Junkie, Morbid: A True Crime Podcast, and My Favorite Murder. These shows have an interesting thread in common in that they all present these true tales of terrible events in a manner that lightens the load with a bit of laughter. 

I guess if there’s a good way to take your murder, it’s with a spoonful of laughter. 

You know, ‘cause it’s the best medicine….?

In other news, the audio platform Deezer is making a special effort to highlight women in podcasting. Throughout the month of March, their homepage will feature pod playlists hosted by women, and they now have a “100% Women” filter for seeking out new and brilliant female voices in both the pod and music worlds. 

So, let’s hear it for the ladies….get out and hear some new voices this week, y’all! And if you’re a lady pod-pro, thanks for bringing your voice to the table!

Good Morning and welcome to the first ever Ginni Media Pod Pops episode! Your daily dose of podcasting news, hacks, advice and pop culture. That tired eye, groggy head, slow start feeling can mean only one thing - it must be a Monday… Which means its a PodTip day! 

PodTip Mondays are when I share some audio hacks and advice to try to help you understand and improve all those pesky technical and logistical queries that come along with having your own Podcast. We’re going to start off the week with the most common piece of advice we tell our podcasters: Think about your environment!

Now obviously you are limited to what you have available, and we don’t all have access to a recording studio - but here’s the thing - you don’t need on. Here are a few things to consider before recording:

 - Block out noise from the outside. Close all doors and windows to hide those New York Sirens.

 - No machines running except your podcasting equipment. We don’t wanna hear your AC unit.

 - Lots of soft materials like couches, rugs, blankets, and carpeting to reduce reverb. We weren’t joking when we said build a pillow fort.

Hopefully you can take even just one bit of this advice onto your next recording and improve the listening experience for your audience.
