The plan? We'll get to that. I was good to my word, and I dedicated myself to the notion that I could be a successful soldier. All the while, I would steal away in the night whenever I had leave the day hence to meet Anna in our cemetery. I gained favor with her heart, but could not reach her mind, and she remained within her father's gripping claws, preparing for the inevitable day when she would leave for her life of solitude on some plantation or other. I resented it most because her father reminded me of my own foster father with whom I continued to quarrel despite my success as a soldier.

I would not be denied. My sights were set, and as it does so often do when I fixate, the obsession drove me nearly mad. I developed an immediate disdain for Anna's father for pulling her away from me, and even my new friend Edmund distanced himself, sensing that any reminder of him would also be a reminder of her. They closed the house on the island, and Edmund began working exclusively from Charleston. That two-hour distance felt like it might as well have been the distance to another world as it meant that I could not see Anna each day.

I had spent so much time with death that I had almost forgotten what it was like to be alive. I was good to my word, and not just to Anna. I was noticed by my superior officers and before long, I was promoted to artificer, a non-commissioned officer. William was very jealous as he had no such luck in promotion. My mechanical skill, education, and cleverness prevailed in my exceeding expectations, and I was keen to share the news with my newfound love...

I have never confessed this, not aloud at least. In fact, I took great pains to conceal these early years, to bottle them up in extravagant lies of travel to Greece and Russia and elsewhere abroad. But now you know that under my false name, I traveled with a company of good men to an island not without an eerie beauty where I had little expectation for any sort of inspiration or adventure. But in this as in many things, I found myself almost wholly wrong.

If you would judge me for my habits, then our conversation is over. So look not with that sour face upon my tormented being. Instead, if you wish me to continue, wash away the notion that you have any idea what comes next. The things I have seen...sometimes I have difficulty telling whether they are dream or reality.

Is it not there as it is here? Death creeping around every corner, always readying to strike, the eye of the beast abject and cruel? I know it must be, for your face tells all. My final venture to the Tamerlane was a harrowing affair, a reminder of how feeble we all are, but it awakened me to the dreamlike undercurrent of our world, and that great, lurking evil.

The light is failing us, isn't it? And why shouldn't we linger in the dark by the light of this candle? Your question is an interesting one. As must be the case for you as well, inspiration comes from many sources, legend, tall-tales, lived experience. I see from the low nod of your head that you agree. As we all must, making sense of this strange world often requires us to process what we hear and see, often numerous points of influence coalescing into a single inspiration. A poem. A story. A letter. This is the story behind a story.

For as long ago as that was, it feels like yesterday. Such is the accordion of time. Push it in, and time passes in fleeting instants, pull it out and suddenly, years and decades are behind you. Every push and pull brings us closer to the inevitable. The only truth there is. That we are born. And we die. Everything in between is a collection of those fleeting instants. Which is why we're here, isn't it? So you know more about my collection. It certainly is why we continued finding our way to the Tamerlane...

Was it the Devil?
I told you, you may not like what you hear. But you've asked me to tell you about my life and my stories. And the truth is that memory causes the real and imagined to blend, metamorphosing what is real into a sometimes monstrous form, unrecognizable, dark. Such is my memory of the sweet Ada, a muse of some of my earliest raptures. I wrote about her once long ago...
