I Dreamt Last Night
Waters dancing in the stream –
What a lovely, lively dream!
Walking through the pretty hills
Churning waters and windmills.
Where did I see this sight before
Which only kept me wanting more?
Dimpled waters curling by
Ripples I saw in the sky.
Misty-eyed, I turned to see
I saw the hills and they were there,
Two from where the waters came
And one that didn’t have a name.
This I called my ‘dreaming’ hill –
It seemed to nicely fit the bill,
I was in that state of mind
Where what you seek is what you’ll find.
The hill told me its little tale
Of how often it was hit by gale,
Its children were these beautiful trees
Felled by people and the breeze.
It was not anger, but despair
That mankind would foolishly dare
To destroy that which gave him life
And with Nature make such strife.
My dream now began to sour
I looked at that unearthly hour,
When I gazed upon the sky
I knew time would fly.
Far away were dazzling stars
Bright and cheerful, Venus to Mars;
I went back to my flowing stream,
Where I had left this unfinished dream.
I turned into a floating cloud –
Colours subdued, I wasn’t loud,
Thunder makes an awful noise
But really that’s not my true voice.
Pitter-patter is my style
With the raindrops I also smile;
Surely you’ve seen us both together –
The sun and I make lovely weather!
They say I come from the sea
What they say won’t worry me;
No one asks the stars about that
So why am I the gloomy brat?
You’re very fickle-minded, people,
You want me when the sun bears down,
Every church has got a steeple –
When I’m around, why the frown?
This dreamer got a hold of me
I wasn’t looking for a write-up, you see;
I would rather pass you gently by
Than have you call me names on the sly.
I dreamt this dream all night long,
And all the while I sang a song;
I marvelled at life’s mystery
As I awakened from my reverie.
Dawn heralded the break of day,
Starting the week on Black Monday.
Where did that lovely Sunday go,
And my lovely stream and its flow?
