  • Poets At War Ep. 13: Ian Wilson 2

Welcome to Poets at War, a podcast documenting the brood of writers, where art, theology, philosophy, and fun beckon your ears. Today on the program, General Joshua David Ling sits down with General Ian Wilson for a war council on Christianity and the paranormal. Ian opens by stumping his short stories — a series about Walter Ulrich, a werewolf paranormal private detective whose lycanthropy is a metaphor for original sin: every full moon he prays through the night with his clerical friends to keep from turning, and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. From there the conversation deepens: why Christians shouldn't be so quick to write off the demonic, an exorcist-turned-Anglican-minister who trains ministers in spiritual warfare, the Jersey Devil, the KJV's dragons and unicorns, Geneva Bible footnotes, an Eastern Orthodox study Bible that translates Isaiah's wild goats as centaurs and night demons, and the seraphim as proof there are more good dragons than bad dragons. Then the General turns on Hollywood — Amazon and Netflix are on record stripping fantasy of anything that smacks of Deus ex machina, and Ian argues that's not editing a genre, it's killing it — with stops at Avatar's bloodbending, Deep Space Nine's wormhole prophets, Stargate's search for the fantasy world, and The Well at the World's End. The second half takes up evangelism: the church as the beautiful bride of Christ who's forgotten to put on her makeup, the lost liturgy of the Apostles' Creed, Psalms as the greatest weapon against the powers of darkness — a sword left on the rack — a full reading of Psalm 2 for the nations in an uproar, why "merry" in Merry Christmas means courageous mirth, and Christmas caroling as marching into battle with scarves and top hats while Aslan is on the move. Art, theology, philosophy, and fun — plus a werewolf who prays against the full moon.

  • Poets At War Ep. 12: Benjamin Curlee

Original Air Date: November 2021Welcome to Poets at War, a podcast documenting the brood of writers, where art, theology, philosophy, and fun beckon your ears. Today on the program, General Joshua David Ling sits down with Benjamin Curlee — the fixer, the detail guy, the MacGyver of media production. A multimedia freelancer forged at Wretched TV under Todd Friel, Benjamin explains why Christians in media should treat art like a craft, not a religion: people hire a good plumber, not a Christian plumber. The conversation ranges from his origin story — a Genesis-to-Revelation slideshow set to Lord of the Rings music that made his granddad cry — to the General's first video, a Sting tribute muted via animated GIFs because Windows Movie Maker wouldn't cooperate. They get into the hardest job in media (managing people when the art side of editing can't be explained over Zoom), work-life balance and modeling the gospel to your kids, Monsters Inc. as the ultimate work-life allegory, and the threefold balance of family, artist, and workman. Then the war talk: the curse, soul-crushing maintenance work, and Christian transhumanism; the floodplain of storytelling left wide open as Hollywood eats its own tail and the industry migrates to a Christ-haunted Atlanta; the internet as the new Romans Road; and the Wives of Snape, proof that every story finds its people. Plus a three-year-old who broke down Beauty and the Beast into three acts, a Christopher Tolkien in the making, Nate Wilson's charge that you're raising an eternal soul, and Joshua 1:9 — be strong and courageous, and do not turn to the right or the left. Art, theology, philosophy, and fun — plus a granddad with tears in his eyes.Chapters: 00:00 — Intro: Entering the War Zone 01:50 — Catching Up: Camping Through the Braves' Last Game 02:32 — Introducing Benjamin Curlee: The Fixer & Detail Guy 05:36 — Details, Dad's Shop & the Wretched Forge 09:56 — The MacGyver Mentality: Plumbing, Signal & the Gospel 12:01 — Craftsman Not Artist: The Christian Plumber Analogy 16:33 — Origin Stories: The Genesis Slideshow & the Sting Tribute 22:31 — Feedback on the Show: The Newsreel Intro & Being Less Harsh 24:28 — The Hardest Job: Managing People & the Art of the Edit 27:11 — Work-Life Balance: Focus, Family & Modeling the Gospel 33:47 — Monsters Inc., the Threefold Balance & Empty Buckets 37:13 — The Curse, Soul-Crushing Repairs & Christian Transhumanism 42:55 — Kids as Art: A Christopher Tolkien & Raising Eternal Souls 47:50 — The Floodplain Is Open: Hollywood, COVID & the Christ-Haunted South 51:51 — The Romans Road, the Wives of Snape & the Gospel Debate 55:48 — Joshua 1:9: Be Strong & Courageous 58:08 — Where to Find Benjamin Curlee59:12 — The General's Send-offJoin The Brood: https://joshuadavidling.com/broodSupport Poets At War: https://patreon.com/poetsatwarWork With Benjamin's Team: https://yonderchild.com

  • Poets At War Ep. 11: World Series

    Original Air Date: 11/03/2021

Welcome to Poets at War, a podcast documenting the brood of writers, where art, theology, philosophy, and fun beckon your ears. Today on the program, General Joshua David Ling files a General Report the morning after the Atlanta Braves won the 2021 World Series against the Houston Astros — their first championship in twenty-six years, and only their second as an Atlanta franchise. He makes the case that God, by the very design of this world, uses the foolish things of this world to shame the wise — and this time, the fools were many: the woke elites who yanked the 2021 All-Star Game out of Atlanta over a "voter suppression" controversy that turned out to be nothing more than requiring ID to vote, only for the Braves to take the World Series anyway. He explains why baseball is an inherently narrative sport — suspense between pitches, rising tension, and an amazing finale — and why you should just try it. And it gets personal: his father raised him on the 90s Braves, it was a family thing then and it's a family thing now, and his father, who passed away last year after beating cancer twice before a mysterious illness took him, would have loved it. Even something as simple as a baseball team winning the big game can have a huge inspirational effect on a society, and the people who would cower before the woke elites are laughing because they took away our All-Star game and we won the World Series. Art, theology, philosophy, and fun — plus the foolish things of this world, and don't you discount them.

  • Poets At War Ep. 10: Chad Lewis

    Original Air Date: November 2021

Welcome to Poets at War, a podcast documenting the brood of writers, where art, theology, philosophy, and fun beckon your ears. Today on the program, General Joshua David Ling sits down with filmmaker extraordinaire Chad Lewis, who's getting Red Angel Studios off the ground with an animated retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's The Shadow — a musical tribute to 90s Disney, about a philosopher obsessed with goodness, truth, and beauty whose shadow becomes his dark opposite (and in which the General voices the princess's father, a dog, and a mouse). The conversation ranges from Bible college and being the odd man out, to why art is worship and fellowship, to Philip Ryken's four principles for Christian art, Tolkien's eucatastrophe, and the story of Scripture as the prince slaying the dragon and getting the girl. They take on the "why this backwater Jewish savior?" question, trace Christ through every culture's hero myths, and debate the Christian artist's spot in the culture war — giving the child a St. George, the barefoot bard mentality, fear of man versus fear of God, and why God is honored by The Lord of the Rings, not propaganda pieces. Plus small stories done right (Facing the Giants, The Babadook, Remember the Titans), two C.S. Lewis moments worth fighting for, and the balance between toasting the glory of God and punching the darkness in the face. Art, theology, philosophy, and fun — plus a mouse with a very good audition tape.
