It's been more than four years since pro-democracy legislator Ted Hui left Hong Kong, becoming the first Hong Kong politician to be granted a special travel exemption to enter Australia with his family, during the pandemic.

Now he has been granted asylum in Australia.

Statement from the Department of Foreign Affairs

Australia is deeply concerned by Hong Kong's widespread application of national security laws to repress civil society and prosecute pro-democracy advocates such as the NSL47, and journalists such as Jimmy Lai.

Australia has been clear about our concerns over the systematic erosion of Hong Kong's rights, freedoms, autonomy and democratic processes . We consistently raise these concerns with Hong Kong and with China.

We urge authorities to uphold and protect Hong Kong's autonomy, rule of law, and the rights and freedoms as guaranteed in the Basic Law and committed to under the Sino-British Joint Declaration.
