Her research covers social movements, international norms that promote human security (especially the responsibility to protect/R2P), Turkish politics and counter-terrorism, and human rights. Her latest research explores the tension between counter-terrorism and human rights and analyzes the ways civil society organizations in Turkey have attempted to promote human rights and hold state officials accountable for gross human rights violations during armed conflict. Donna Reed is the District 5 representative on Reading City Council. She was Council vice president from 2015 through January 2018. Though the years, she has served on a number of Council committees, chairing the former marketing and holiday planning committees and co-chairing the finance committee. She now serves as Council representative to the Reading Area Transportation Study (RATS) and is Council liaison to BCTV. In the past, she was a liaison to the DID and to the former Main Street Board. On today’s podcast, I interview Dr. Steve Marr. Dr. Marr is a senior lecturer in Peace and Conflict Studies. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Florida in 2008, specializing in Comparative Politics, Political Theory, and African Studies. Currently, he is at work on a number of long-term comparative urban studies projects that seek to place African-focused approaches to urban theory at the center of a rethinking of contemporary urban theory. We have a lot to talk about on this week's episode of Swamp! We start off with all the happenings in the DC wetlands. Some of the things we discuss include the Armenian genocide, how the US minimum wage conversation matches some of the same minimum wage conversations in the EU, and the UK slashing its foreign aid budget by $6.25 billion USD. This seriously weakens the UK's soft power influence and many in the US are worried about the economic and geopolitical repercussions. Then, we have a lot of things to talk about concerning China. Some topics include China building allies with the "Global South," China undervaluing their currency, genocide, and Chinese isolation. And, of course, a sneak peek of Thursday's interview!
