Pop Culture Yearbook

We recently discussed our top LOL movies of all-time. In this episode we are devoting all our time to, in our opinion, one of the funniest movies ever, Not Another Teen Movie.  This movie brilliantly lampoons at least 25 teen comedies, includes many future stars, and has a killer soundtrack.  We loved discussing it, and we thank Giff for choosing it.

In addition to the movie discussion, we also rank our top teen comedies from 2000-2009, and we close the yearbook with our overall favorite movies of 2001. Put on your glasses, some paint covered overalls, and put your hair in a ponytail before listening to this great episode. Do it for Marty's torso!

You're not gonna tempt me! Well, that's what you think. We are talking Temptation Island, one of the first truly trashy and morally corrupt reality shows. Hitting the FOX airwaves in 2001, it has found a second life with a USA network reboot. Both have captivated Brad (and his wife) with each and every season. Did Pete and Giff get sucked in as well? In this episode, we answer that question and many more. There is a lot to unpack with a show like TI.

Our discussion then branches into many other reality shows as well, some trashy and some more wholesome. Find out what we've fallen victim to over the years in the reality TV arena. Because this episode is about couples, we also share stories from our weddings and honeymoons, which all just happened to take place in that magical year of 2001. Say 'I do' with us and enjoy!

In this very special episode of PCY, we discuss our memories of the day we will never forget. We then discuss different elements of pop culture and how they played a role in the healing process of the nation. Topics discussed include David Letterman, SNL, Alan Jackson, sports, and the U2 Super Bowl halftime show.  Even though it is a heavier show than normal, we do finish with our top TV of the year to end on a lighter note.

We kick off our tour through 2001 with a show that premiered and really changed TV: The Office (UK Version). The mockumentary, no laugh track style that is very common today was used expertly in this series. In our discussion, we try to answer some burning questions. How did David Brent ever get his job in the first place? Is there no such thing in England as HR or sexual harassment? What are some of the big differences between the UK version and the American version? We may not have all the answers, but we definitely theorize.

Upon completing that portion of the show, we discuss our other favorite workplace comedies (TV and film). Depending on how you define a workplace comedy, this list can be quite broad. We also finish the episode with our favorite music of 2001. Because why not? It's always a good time to discuss music.

Your usual hosts are back to discuss 1995’s The Usual Suspects. While watching this movie may be problematic now thanks to bad boys Kevin Spacey and Bryan Singer, it is still one of the greatest surprise endings in cinema. How did Brad, Pete, and Giff feel it holds up? Can they separate the personal lives of its star and director from the film itself?

After answering that burning question, your hosts discuss other great movies with surprise endings or big twists.  They close the yearbook on 1995 by sharing their top five movies of the year. Listen to hear what twists and surprises we have in store for you!

In this episode we discuss a movie about a great divorced dad working as a lawyer in LA. Actually, while Dan Hedaya is fantastic, Clueless is the vehicle that made Alicia Silverstone famous. Our topic for this episode was chosen by Giff. Listen in as he tells us about his 1995 memories and why he picked the movie. We discuss some of the memorable lines, scenes, and especially characters, most portrayed by young actors we all know and love today.

After the movie discussion, we share our favorite teen comedies of the ‘90’s. Where does Clueless rank among many great contenders? We finish with our favorite music of the year, and there was no shortage of great songs and albums to choose from. Take some time to totally pause and give this one a listen.

Chris Farley left us too soon. Fortunately, in addition to the many hilarious SNL skits he was a part of, we have the movie Tommy Boy, Pete’s choice for 1995. Now 26 years old, how does is hold up? Is it as laugh out loud funny as we remembered? Where does it rank amongst the classic comedies, especially from the 90’s? Listen as Pete, Brad, and Giff share their opinions about this modern day odd couple.

After wrapping up our thoughts on the film, we rank our favorite LOL movies of all time. These aren’t necessarily the best comedy movies, but the ones that made us laugh the loudest and the longest. Since Tommy Boy is somewhat related to SNL, our other list for this week is our TV discussion of 1995. Was their anything important besides OJ??? Don’t miss this one. Years from now, when you are discussing great PCY episodes from the past, you’ll want your friend to say, “Rob, you were there!”

In 1995, Chris Isaak, of “Wicked Game” fame, put out his 5th studio album, Forever Blue. While working at the Corner Store one day Brad heard the first single and instantly became a fan. Soon after, Pete was also on board, and Isaak became a staple in their music rotation for years to come. Giff may not have heard the album until recently, but he also discovered the same magic the other hosts did. All three had a fantastic time breaking down this breakup album from beginning to end.

In this first episode about 1995, Brad also shares his memories of the year, some of which are related to Chris Isaak, but obviously not all. After they break down the music, your hosts also discuss their favorite concert going experiences and live performers. Finally they share their favorite underappreciated musical artists to cap off a great episode. Baby, we did NOT do a bad bad thing. Enjoy!

Vegas, Baby! Vegas! In this final installment of our Summer Vacation Series, we cover probably the least well-known Vacation movie: Vegas Vacation.  It is not a National Lampoon installment, but Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo are still the stars. You also have Rusty, Audrey, Cousin Eddie, and slew of other familiar faces. Does this movie hold up? Where does it rank in the canon (is it at least better than European Vacation)? We share our very important opinions on this controversial issue.

All your hosts are big fans of Vegas, so in addition to breaking down the movie, we also share our favorite memories from our trips to Sin City. We tell you what we can tell you, but some stories have to stay in Vegas. We also discuss our favorite movies featuring Las Vegas. We went all in on this one, and we're hoping to make out like Nick Papagiorgio!
