"On the Bigotry Hotline"
Graham and Sarah are in high spirits this week, which is good because the world's home entertainment companies trying to bring everyone down.
While Sarah tackles grooming in Eureka Video's "Allure" and the destruction of the countryside in the BFI's none-more-BFI documentary "Arcadia", Graham seems to have the lighter option with Criterion's "Smithereens" - but there's a sting in that particular tale, and at least one unexpected cameo.
Before all of that is our Film of the Week, "BlacKkKlansman". It's thematically just as heavy, but Spike Lee's comeback finds him in unexpectedly witty and accessible form, and as Mark discovers, even our childhood toys aren't safe from very adult concerns ...
If you enjoyed that, check out some of the other members of the geek show family. Alternatively, you can support us by giving us a 5-star review on your podcast app of choice or by sending some love to our PATREON. Until next week with either Cold War or Yardie, our local cinema never helps on this matter, keep it Eclectica.

The Millennial Retro of Slender Man
What happens when you introduce three newcomers to a well-known kung fu movie from the '90s? Join Sarah, Mick and Aidan as they get thrown into the deep end with Director's Lottery winner Tsui Hark's classic martial arts film which stars Jet Li as the legendary Wong Fei Hung - "Once upon a Time in China" (Part I, for those keeping count).
After that it's time for a run down of our other featured films, and this week Sarah joins an octogenarian Burt Reynolds for Adam Rifkin's ode to a screen legend - "The Last Movie Star". Maanwhile, Mick is thoroughly impressed and affected by the powerful Russian(ish) drama from Russia "A Gentle Creature", before Aidan joins Donald Sutherland for a brawl in a barn with a demon in "Apprentice to Murder".
We couldn't possibly end a week without some trash now, could we?

Until next time when we'll be talking about Blackkklansman, keep it Eclectica.

The Legend of Cedric
Graham's been practising his terrible Jason Statham impersonation for a whole week, but in the end it's Mark who covers the Stath's shark-'em-up The Meg. Rob, Aidan and Graham, meanwhile, turn their attention to Michael Lehmann's cult classic Heathers, now back in cinemas for its thirtieth anniversary. Is it still so very, or has it accrued some damage?
A full Off the Shelf sees Rob looking at an uncharacteristic film by one of his favourite directors - Hirokazu Koreeda - in Arrow Academy's new release The Third Murder, Graham goes in the slammer with Frank Sinatra and Leslie Howard in The Premium Collection's triple-format release of Von Ryan's Express, and Aidan initiates our new feature Devil's Advocate. For its first run-out, we're asking a question that could result in fisticuffs: is David Fincher's Fight Club really any good?
Apologies for the background noise this week, Rob's water tank was kicking out all sorts of noise. It shouldn't stop you from enjoying this week's packed episode. If you did, subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and consider giving us a rating on iTunes. Or head over to our PATREON. Join us next week as we tackle our latest director's lottery episode, who is the director in question - you'll have to listen to find out.

Paul Rudd Roulette
After a week's break the ant-icipation is growing for Graham, Mick and Andrew as they tackle Marvel's latest superhero offering - "Ant-Man and the Wasp". Will they make a big deal out of it and add to the positive buzz, belittle it with feeble size and insect puns (like the ones we're doing right now), or even do both?
After that dramatic opening which is tantamount to a 4-Panel takoever, it's time for Off the Shelf which sees the gang out on their serious nerd faces for something of a fantasy special. Mick kicks it all off with Paul Verhoven's typically tasteful "Flesh and Blood", which Graham follows-up by unearthing a skeleton from Tom Hanks' closet in the form of "Mazes and Monsters". After that it's Andrew's turn to luxuriates in the Muscovite madness of "The Last Warrior".
Then they all invent a new flavour of Kit-Kat.
A Paul Rudd Roulette, huh? Only on Eclectica. If you want to send some good vibes, give us a star rating on ITUNES. You can also send us something a little more concrete as a sign of appreciation. Head over to our PATREON, and send us some pennies. Until next time with the Meg, thanks for listening.

Jeff Goldblum's Massive Tricycle
So there's this hotel over in California where you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave - largely because you're still on the member's list.
This week Aidan, Graham and Rob are booking into Drew Pearce's "Hotel Artemis" - which is an uncommon original screenplay in a summer of sequels, but does it live up to its extraordinary guest list? Oh, and if you're thinking "Hang on, Hotel Artemis wasn't the big release of last weekend", then don't worry because Mark has you covered since he went to see "Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!", specifically for the … erm … distinctive performance of Pierce Brosnan.
After that there are troubling discoveries in Off the Shelf, not least of which is Rob learning who Pitbull is via the medium of Aidan's review of "Gotti". After that we have an Arrow Video round-up, with Rob taking on '80s slasher "Doom Asylum" before Graham takes a quick look over Tale of Cinema & Woman is the Future of Man: Two Films by Hong Sang-soo, and Troy Duffy's divisive cult item "The Boondock Saints".
If you liked the show, head over to The Geek Show and see what other podcasts we have to offer or pop over to our PATREON and send some pennies our way. Both are great way's to support Cinema Eclectica.

Grumpy Old Dictators
It's a three-man show disguised as a two-man show this week as Rob and Graham invite Mark on for an exciting new feature where we take a different look at two of last week's big releases - "The Incredibles 2" and "Skyscraper".
Before all of that though, there's a hilariously perverse piece of counter-programming thanks to our Director's Lottery, which this time has gifted us with Julia Loktev's minimalist hiking drama "The Loneliest Planet" - the box office takings of which were somewhere below the average Dwayne Johnson vehicle.
After duly dispensing those duties it's time for our photo negative show, where the usual home releases are replaced with new offerings at the cinema - and as we noted before, Mark is handling the blockbuster end of things. In the meantime, Rob and Graham have the disconcertingly cancer-themed double bill of Priscilla Cameron's debut "The Butterfly Tree" and Paul Schrader's raging comeback "First Reformed".
Thanks for tuning in, we have plenty more new additions to the show coming soon, but until next time with Hotel Artemis keep it Eclectica. If you want to send a little support our way, you can. Head on over to our PATREON and send some pennies our way. Alternatively, you can follow us on twitter at @oieclectica.

Sexy Guernica
After some technical problems the Eclectica gang manage to find the right lever switch to send 5,000 volts through their microphones while they maniacally scream "It's alive!" as they discuss "Mary Shelley". With Elle Fanning bringing the Frankenstein author to life and Haifaa al-Mansour supplying her "Abby Normal" brainpower in the director's chair, wait ...
You know what? We've run out of Frankenstein references, so while we desperately scramble around for some new jokes we find out if the film is good or not.
A stacked-up Off the Shelf sees Aidan bellowing greetings to Second Run's Blu-Ray of Milos Forman's debut "Black Peter", and Sarah narrowly avoids the mother of all spoonerisms as she covers BFI's reissue of "The Entertainer" starring Laurence Olivier. Meanwhile, Graham offers a cold, haunted and frankly disappointed stare at Signature Films' "Dark Crimes".
It's all on the new Eclectica, now with added book recommendations (for some reason)!
Support the podcast by following us on twitter @oieclectica or send some pennies over to our PATREON. But until next time, don't watch anything we wouldn't.

Killed By W.A.S.P.
For a Fuller podcast experience, join Ryan, Graham, and Aidan for Cinema Eclectica's Sam Fuller special, where the second half of the show is a deep dive into Indicator's new box set devoted to the great San Franciscan's work. Ryan immediately clicks (buddy-cop style), with "The Crimson Kimono", Aidan takes a trip to "Underworld USA", and Graham holds the presses for "Scandal Sheet". If you're as dedicated to the two-fisted tabloid noir auteur as we are, then this is a must-listen show!
Before all of that though, there's this little thing we do sometimes called Director's Lottery, which on this occasion offers us too much flippin' perspective on Rob Reiner's legendary debut mockumentary "This Is Spinal Tap". Considering its cult following, its relationship with real rock history and (we're sorry in advance), some sing-alongs, this is the ultimate exploration of the fine line between stupid and clever.
If you want to see us turn it up to 11 then there are a few ways you can support us. You could give us a star rating on your podcast app of choice, or you could head over to our PATREON and send some pennies our way.
Until next time when we will bring you Sicario Soldado, be excellent to each other.
