The fire is lit, the mulled wine has been dished out and the word of the week is 'picaresque'.

It's an Eclectica Christmas party alright, with Aidan, Sarah, Rob and Graham falling hard for Boots Riley's debut "Sorry to Bother You". Granted that's not very festive, but after a potted history of unmade Spider-Men from Mark the second half of the show will have you wishing it was January.

It's not all insane as Aidan has Bill Forsyth's "Comfort and Joy", which is a straightforward tale of Glaswegian ice cream men. Meanwhile, Graham's dealing with the birth of the bigfoot furry sex comedy in the form of Netflix's "Pottersville", and Rob brings the gift of Shatner with "Christmas Horror Story".

An Elvira Approved Podcast

We don't often get a British film that we can all sink our teeth into here on Cinema Eclectica, so when one finally does appear we tend to subject it to a bit of … erm … mauling. Oh dear.

The target of all this enthusiastic … nuzzling let's say (it sounds better than mauling!), is Sebastián Lelio's English language debut film, "Disobedience".

Oh dear, oh dear …

It's not all "bad" news though, as we get re-invigorated by "Elvira: Mistress of the Dark" at the midpoint of the show so we have all the power for the home stretch. After that energy boost, Aidan contends with John Schlesinger's "Yanks" while Mick does his very best to convert all of us to the Church of Ingmar Bergman using the baffling "Serpent's Egg" (yes, Elvira allowed us to find the innuendo in that one too).

But that isn't all we have for you this week, as our roving reporter Mark returns to talk about the eighth instalment in the R long-running Rocky franchise … sorry, make that "Creed II".

Justified Wrongness on the Internet

We've got everything from Jules Verne to Ava DuVernay this week, and Tim, Rob and Graham kick off an unusually packed show with a look at the Selma director's early film "Middle of Nowhere".

After that it's Off the Shelf, which is a veritable treasure trove of wildly diverse films, beginning with "Age of Consent" (Michael Powell's last film and Helen Mirren's first), from Powerhouse Films' Indicator series. Then it's time for a film that's hard to Google but fun to watch - Bryan Bertino's "The Monster" from Lionsgate, and closing things off is an animated feature as Czech genius Karel Zeman shows off his style in Second Run's release of "Invention for Destruction".

But that's not all! Keep listening to the end for a special surprise from Mark, as well as Graham's worst-ever pun.

The Crumbs of Grimsby

It was a dark and stormy night, which explains why we all stayed indoors to watch "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" rather than going out to see the latest addition to the Potter-verse or whatever it's called. Mark's handling that one, so Rob and Graham are forced to check out the Coen brothers' portmanteau Western. 

That's right, forced! Which film critic worth their salt would choose a film by the Coen Brothers over yet another addition to Harry Potter universe? 

After that it's Off the Shelf, which this week has Rob tackling an all-star British comedy from the director of The Stepford Wives with Indicator's blu-ray release of "The Wrong Box". It's then time for Graham to settle down with the other half of equity in Robert Altman's "Gosford Park", which is available now from Arrow Academy. 

It's still raining out there, but don't worry - we could be back on Netflix next week ...

A New Duo Emerges!

Join Aidan and Sarah as they discuss the latest film from the critically adored Steve McQueen, and what they find is that "Widows" is strangest of all beasts - an accessible film (well, accessible for Steve McQueen anyway as that guy has some bleak chops).

About half way through the show we have a rather extreme change in tone from mean streets and heists to screwball comedy as Sarah tackles the the Criterion release of "My Man Godfrey" starring William Powell. After that it's Aidan's turn on the movie rodeo, and this week he's got Scorsese in the director's chair with documentary-cum-concert movie "The Last Waltz" - which may be a little out of his comfort zone but oh well …

It's in weeks like this that we really earn our moniker of Cinema Eclectica.

Dummy Massacre!

It's a podcast that has been forty years in the making - which makes it even stranger that we ended up recording it on Bonfire Night!

This week the Eclectica gang get together for a chat about the latet Orson Welles's extremely late-period film "The Other Side of the Wind", but that's not the only late-period directorial indulgence, as Off the Shelf sees Graham take up a cudgel in defence of Terrence Malick's misunderstood "To the Wonder". Meanwhile, Aidan discovers some prime-era Hal Ashby with Warren Beatty, Julie Christie and the late Carrie Fisher starring in "Shampoo", which has been newly reissued on Blu-Ray by the Criterion Collection.

We also pitch an all-directors remake of Inside Out, because we can.

Halloween 2018 Special: Party With The Supercrack

The dead have risen and they're ... well, you'll have to wait until the end of the show to find out. Leading us up to that point are Sarah, Aidan and Graham with our Film of the Week - Sam Raimi's horror classic "The Evil Dead", which is followed by some very different low budget scares in Off the Shelf.

This year's Halloween special has a 'So Bad It's Good?' theme going on, and in Aidan's case this involves the now infamous Troll 2 (the question answers itself), which leads us to ask where you might position Frank Henenlotter's "Frankenhooker" or "Legacy of Satan" (from the director of Deep Throat!), on the spectrum of good and bad? Sarah and Graham, respectively, have your scientifically ascertained answers.
