De-Gayed in the Final Draft

This week Ryan, Graham and Aidan must face a terrible horror that they've ignored for too long, and is now ready to harvest their souls …

But before we talk about James Corden there's Ari Aster's hit debut "Hereditary" - which has been compared to The Exorcist, The Babadook and an obscure 1960s play (although the last one is just us).

After whirling through a minority report on "Ocean's 8" faster than Sandra Bullock can rob a clothes store, Aidan and Graham discuss Paul Schrader's masterful reinvention of the biopic "Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters". It's a film with some guts, which is more than you can say for its protagonist by the end of proceedings.

You've seen dinosaurs in a theme park, but what happens if they get out? Well, then the film would just be called Jurassic.

That quibble aside, J.A. Bayona's "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" makes some efforts to shake up the franchise - but will it leave Ryan, Tim and Graham similarly shaken?

Elsewhere, there's a quick trailer watch with new films from Luca Guadagnino, David Lowery and Drew Goddard, as well as reviews of Eureka films' reissue of the classic Sidney Poitier vehicle "No Way Out" and Left Films's new British folk horror "Dogged". The real horror comes at the end though, and yes, yes, there's a preview of Hereditary, but it's also musical theatre …

The Revenant: The James Brown Cut

Silence! 

It's a bad idea for podcasts, but as the BFI are reminding us with their re-release of GW Pabst's pre-talkie classic "Pandora's Box", it's a good idea for movies. So how will this icon of silent cinema (and the decades-old inspiration for the hairstyles of people going to 1920s-themed costume parties), fare with modern film fans?

Off the Shelf also has another classic from BFI as Aidan jogs along with their reissue of Tony Richardson's "The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner", which goes to to toe with Rob's coverage of Abdelletif Kechiche's forgotten film "Black Venus" - which is available from Arrow Academy. 

So it's a show full of archive rediscoveries, but the real comeback has been saved for the end ...

Vera Drake in 4DX

In a week that includes a new Star Wars film then that's what you have to do, which is why we can't ignore the release of "Solo: A Star Wars Story". Unfortunately Graham, Aidan and Sarah are all at very different levels of the Star Wars fandom, so what will they make of it?

More importantly, who paid extra to see it in 4DX and was it worth it?

After that it's business as usual with Off the Shelf, which this week is a chamber of horrors as Graham - our resident Universal Horror superfan - breaks in to James Whale's "The Old Dark House" (now on Blu-Ray from Eureka/Masters of Cinema), for a good rummage. Meanwhile, Aidan finds out why "Death Smiles on a Murderer" in Arrow Video's re-release of the 1970s Italian Horror (given the name, it's definitely not going to be a 1980s John Hughes movie … except maybe Home Alone because that kid is obviously the bad guy from Saw).

Smurf Bloody Smurf

This week we review Deadpool 2, and it's … err … we don't know actually as that brotherhood of evil comic-book and manga fans called 4-Panel take over the airwaves in a fourth-wall-breaking stunt worthy of the mutated scamp himself.

So does it live up to the original? It's not a rhetorical question this week as we genuinely have no idea.

After we wrestle back control of the show it's time for Off the Shelf, which offers more orthodox business (assuming your rabbi is very open-minded). He might be up for some '70s black comedy in Indicator's reissue of Alan Arkin's directorial debut "Little Murders", but would he jack himself in for a bit of body horror with Black Label's Blu-Ray release of David Cronenberg's "eXistenZ"?

Fortunately you don't need to ask him, or extend this tortured metaphor any further as Aidan and Graham are on the case.

When The Dancing Stops … Leave

Our latest Film of the Week, José Padilha's "Entebbe", is a tale of crisis, violence, revolution, and the old order breaking down - which is probably why we start off by accidentally junking the running order. 

Eventually (and with far more discussion of interpretive dance and changing fashions in onscreen captions than we expected), we get to Off the Shelf and two of our favourite labels. Arrow Video unleash yet another ancient evil with "Rawhead Rex" - George Pavlou's adaptation of Clive Barker's short story of the same name which Tim takes a swing at. Meanwhile, Second Run have reissued Ivan Passer's Czech classic "Intimate Lighting", but does this orchestral comedy hit the right notes for Graham?

*The Best 1980s Sci-Fi Junk Never *

Sandwiching two slices of groundbreaking queer cinema in between the bread of gritty revenge drama, this week's show truly has something for everyone. 

Maybe he's just able to relate to the parched atmosphere, but Graham is very taken with Warwick Thornton's outback western "Sweet Country", while Aidan is keen to make a song and dance about Sebastian Lelio's "A Fantastic Woman".

We then have two milestones as Sarah covers the first mainstream LGBT teen film - Greg Berlanti's "Love, Simon", after which Rob rounds off our B-Sides show with "You Were Never Really Here" - a new film by Lynne Ramsay that we've had to wait for, for quite a while.
