Stoner's Guide to Super-Vacuity

A series of inscrutable clues leads Ryan, Graham, Sarah and Aidan to "Under the Silver Lake", a film that makes you suspect David Robert Mitchell was definitely one of those kids who played with secret decoder rings as a child. Prepare for disagreements. 

Off the Shelf kicks off with a very different new release - Adam Shankman's remake (or reboot, or de-Gibsoning), "What Men Want", followed by the Ozsploitation landmark "Next of Kin" - which has been newly released by Second Sight. There isn't a better way to close an episode than with some Jackie Chan, and Eureka have delivered the goods. Anyone fancy some "Wheels on Meals"?

The Mean Streets of Micheal Portillo

This week, Andrew, Mick and Rob witness the birth of … (hang on because we're pretty sure we can do that trailer thing in text) … a/ HER \o with "Captain Marvel". As far as we're concerned Brie Larson has always been our captain, but what about the rest of the film? Mark is also here for a look at how the actual '90s treated women in superhero movies.

Apres Marvel it's Off the Shelf, with Andrew finding the unexpected Fritz Lang-Michael Portillo link in Eureka's Blu-Ray release of "Human Desire", Rob getting into the carnival spirit of Lionsgate's "Hell Fest", and Mick unexpectedly finding an explanation of Brexit in Screenbound's new British Gothic horror "Crucible of the Vampire". It's almost too much fun!

Bathtime for Udo

Last week Rob and Graham received a mystery phone call asking them to review Hideo Nakata's "Ring". They're not dead yet, and although the news that this is a twentieth anniversary reissue is making them feel incredibly old they still have to find out if the film still holds up.

After that it's Off the Shelf, which sees Graham challenging Rob to watch the Victorian phallic lunacy of Walerian Borowczyk's "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Miss Osbourne", then Graham gets acquainted with Richard Billingham's "Ray & Liz" before looking ahead to next week's releases.

Algebra Lessons with Foxy Brown

It's the biggest week of the film calendar, so Aidan and Rob fulfill their obligations with a bit of an Oscars chatter before getting to the important matter of being bamboozled by the Film of the Week which, thanks to the Directors Lottery coming up with Jacques Rivette, means in their infinite wisdom they decided to fumble around with "Le Pont du Nord". 

After that it's on to more solid ground with Rainer Werner Fassbinder's 4 hour long TV movie "World on a Wire". Sarcasm! We're certainly cycling uphill this week, and since that's the case what better way to end the show than with the maximalist nonsense of studio-led exploitation in "Class of 1999" (it's an odd week, alright).

Eclectica is back with "The Kid Who Would Be King" - the latest film from Joe Cornish, and in a strange turn of events, Graham and Tim's review features very few references to Adam and Joe. 

We're sorry. We'll try and make up for it when we do a Jacques Rivette film next week.

After that it's our usual Off the Shelf section, which features Second Run's release of Bill Morrison's "Dawson City Frozen Time" - a film that's as much fun to watch as it is to say, and StudioCanal's reissue of the inimitable "Evil Dead 2". Don't worry, we're not the sort of hacks who are going to end the review by saying "Groovy" as we saved that for the show description.

The John Entwistle of J-Horror

Two beams of refracted "Moonlight": the Best Picture-winning (eventually) film's writer Tarell Alvin McRaney has a new film on Netflix, "High Flying Bird", which Mark takes a look at before Aidan, Tim and Graham check out director Barry Jenkins's new work "If Beale Street Could Talk".

Meanwhile, Off the Shelf has Aidan possessed by the unearthly mind of Kiyoshi Kurosawa in Arrow Films's Blu-Ray of his SF weirdie "Before We Vanish", after which Graham inexplicably decides to watch the film that nearly derailed Jason Reitman's career, the reefer madness for the Snapchat age that is "Men, Women and Children".

Your "Burning" desire to hear a review of the new Lee Chang-Dong film can finally be satiated, as Rob, Graham and Tim take on the adaptation of a Haruki Murakami short story is our Film Of The Week.

Tim kicks off our Off the Shelf section with a new Netflix release - Tony Gilroy's arts-world horror "Velvet Buzzsaw" - which is basically a Vincent Price movie with Jake Gyllenhaal. Is it better? Worse? The same, but in a different way? 

After that it's time for Graham to take on BFI's re-issue of "Rogue Male" (starring Peter O'Toole), and then it's time for Rob to spends some time at the circus with Indicator's vintage slice of Joan Crawfordsploitation - "Berserk".

Deep Purple's Oscar Beef

Burnt-out, scrappy-haired and squinting through an agonising hangover - but that's enough about Graham and Aidan as they've got to discuss Nicole Kidman's transformative turn in Karyn Kusama's grittier-than-thou cop thriller "Destroyer". Does it pack the same tooth-loosening impact as the butt of Kidman's gun?

After some discussion of the most superhero-packed set of Oscar nominations in history (primary competition for this title: none), it's time for Off the Shelf - which is a bit of a weirdo road-trip this week. First there's Graham, who finds plenty to sing about in Criterion's new Blu-Ray of David Byrne's "True Stories", and that's closely followed by Aidan who has set out his deckchair especially for Andrew Kotting's seaside travelogue "Gallivant".

Silent Power, Noisy Door

He's been to Director's Jail, served his Director's Probation, and is now worryingly close to being a repeat offender (according to Mick, Graham and Aidan that is). It's M. Night Shyamalan, whose trilogy-capper "Glass" is put under the magnifying lens as our Film of the Week.

A packed Off the Shelf sees Aidan stalking a highly desirable object in the form of Criterion's new Blu-ray release of the Michel Simon vehicle "Panique", before Graham breaks the silence around Second Run's new edition of the late Jan Nemec's "Diamonds of the Night". Finally, Mick points us towards Indicator's new release of William Castle's "Zotz!". 

What is "Zotz!", you ask? It's hard to explain, but impossible to stop saying.

New Queen, Who Dis?

Eclectica is back in 2019 for an Oscar season like no other. There's a film about a famous author and one about a British monarch, but this time the more literary of the two sees Keira Knightley putting the bi in biopic for our film of the week "Colette". As for the royal film, well ... it's a Yorgos Lanthimos joint - which Graham discovers when he tackles "The Favourite". 

After that things take a sharp left turn as Sarah looks at Icon Films' new release "Dog Days", which is about dogs and takes place over several days.
