  • 218: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood + The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith - Eclectica #218
Angel of the North Has Fallen

The radio's blasting 60's pop, Aidan's smoking Red Apples and Rob's barefoot for no adequate reason, which means it's time for a new Quentin Tarantino film.

"Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood" has provoked heated debate about its ... well, everything, really. But what's the Eclectica take?

Off the Shelf sees two Eureka releases providing very different but complimentary crime thrillers to Leo and Brad's. Rob takes a look at Martin Sheen's screen debut in 1967's "The Incident", while Aidan takes a look at Fred Schepsi's controversial Australian New Wave thriller "The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith".

  • 217: Do the Right Thing + Used Cars + Jean Cocteau - Eclectica #217
    They Saved Hitler's Bath

It's been 30 years since Spike Lee unleashed "Do the Right Thing" on cinemas like a bin pitched through a pizzeria window. Now, Aidan and Graham convene to give you the double truth, Ruth, about how it holds up in the modern era.

Off the Shelf sees Aidan looking at the very early (and very atypical), Robert Zemeckis film "Used Cars" - which has been reissued by Eureka - while Graham envelops this review in a duvet of Jean Cocteau reissues ("Blood of a Poet" and The "Testament of Orpheus"), from Studio Canal.

Come for the reviews, stay for the trivia about Hitler's bath.

  • 216: Under the Skin + Norman J. Warren Special - Eclectica #216
    Beheaded by Duck

Last week's director's lottery came out with Jonathan Glazer, so this week Rob, Aidan and Graham sit down for the British maverick's sci-fi psych-out "Under the Skin". Scarlett Johansson, white transit van, Glasgow - you know the drill.

A special Off the Shelf, meanwhile, sees them taking selections from Indicator's Norman J. Warren box set, to wit "Terror", "Bloody New Year" and "Satan's Slave". What kind of exploitation is this? Everything. It's Everythingsploitation.

  • 215: Lion King (2019) + Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean - Eclectica #215
    Poundland Elvis Costello's Magic Scarf

It's the circle of life: movie comes out, makes money, sequels die, and a remake grows. Jon Favreau's "The Lion King" comes under the scrutiny of Graham and Aidan this week, as well as the general trend of Disney remakes. Are there reasons for this that aren't related to the Mouse House's share price?

On the opposite end of the blockbuster spectrum, Off the Shelf contains two small, personal projects by maverick American auteurs. Graham hangs out with Robert Altman for Eureka Masters of Cinema's "Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean", while Aidan encounters the programmable artificial intelligence that is Neil Breen in "Twisted Pair".

Somehow we don't have the Breenius on our Director's Lottery list! As for who we do have, there's some exciting news ...

  • 214: The Dead Don't Die + Border + Asylum - Eclectica #214
The Last Of The English Tawdries

This week Graham and Tim check out Jim Jarmusch as he pioneers un-deadpan comedy with The Dead Don't Die.

Are the jokes as dusty as Jarmusch's strangely goreless zombies?

Off the Shelf sees Graham covering Border - the Mubi release which combines the two poles of modern Scandinavian cinema (bleak crime stuff and trolls), while Mick drops by for a look at the classic British horror anthology Asylum.

And if you think that's scary, wait until you hear what we're doing next week ...

  • 213: Midsommar + The Cockleshell Heroes + DemonLover - Eclectica #213
    Throat Singing Of Terror!

Folk horror comes to the multiplexes this week with Ari Aster's "Midsommar", set in a Swedish pagan commune. Aster's own preferred human sacrifice ritual involves dividing podcasters in half as the try to figure out how well his movies work, so what did Graham and Aidan think of this one?

Off the Shelf, meanwhile, sees Graham embarking on a top-secret mission to review Eureka's WWII comedy-drama "The Cockleshell Heroes", while Aidan logs on for Arrow's reissue of Olivier Assayas's early-00s online grot thriller "Demonlover". Does it still have the power to sink its tentacles into audiences?

  • 212: In Fabric + Case for a Rookie Hangman + Sleepwalkers - Eclectica #212
    Clovis the Action Cat

We've gone weird before, obviously, but we've never spent a whole show as far out on the fringes as we do this week. Film of the Week is Peter Strickland's "In Fabric" - the weirdest film from the director of "The Duke of Burgundy" (yeah, have a think about THAT), which Rob and Graham are beguiled and bewildered by. Not necessarily in that order.

Off the Shelf offers no stable ground either, rather the bendy floorboards of Pavel Juracek's "Case for a Rookie Hangman", which is out on Blu-Ray by Second Run. After that it's Graham's turn at the wheel, and he has the comforting mainstream familiarity of a Stephen King movie ... right?

    Not when it's incest-driven were-cat yarn "Sleepwalkers", it's not.

  • 211: Toy Story 4 + Donbass + Scum - Eclectica #211
    Angry Mr. Plow

A universally relatable tale of the inner angst of knowing you were made from a spork, "Toy Story 4" is our Film of the Week this week. The trilogy seemed to come to a perfect end nine years ago, so is this new offering worthy of another dip in the toy-box?

Off the Shelf sees Graham and Aidan get as far away from family-friendly as possible, with the former reviewing Sergey Loznitsa's absurd war movie "Donbass", which is out now from Montage Pictures. Meanwhile, Aidan checks out Indicator's 40th anniversary reissue of "Scum" and finds it's still the daddy of British prison movies.

Get your glad rags on for next week.

  • 210: David Cronenberg + Holy Mountain + Andromeda Strain - Eclectica #210
Jules & Jim up a Mountain

At 210 episodes old we can ask for all the things in the world, but that doesn't mean we're going to get anything for this "obvious" landmark.

Besides, Rob and Aidan have a job to do.

This week it's another of our regular Directors Lottery episodes, and the director in question for this rodeo is David Cronenberg. So what did we choose from his amazingly sticky filmography? It's none other than Big Dave's ultimate divorce movie, "The Brood".

We also have a stacked Off The Shelf section, and kicking things off is Aidan with "The Holy Mountain" (not that one), while Rob looks at a film from the director of something dark, dangerous and unholy with "The Sender". Meanwhile, Mick visits from afar with a sci-fi double in the form of "The Andromeda Strain" and "The China Syndrome".

210 episodes and we still bring you all the movies. How cool are we? All the cool, that's how cool.

  • 209: X-Men: Dark Phoenix + The Running Man + Def-Con 4 - Eclectica #209
    Damn You 5 for £25!

The uncontainable power of our sister show 4-Panel rises up and consumes us again as Mick and Andrew join Aidan to discuss "X-Men: Dark Phoenix". It's the last in a franchise that's lasted as long as two MCUs, but what's the endgame like?

Of course, before we watched films with the word 'men' in the title, we had to make do with films with 'man' in the title, and the master of those was Carol Reed. After "The Third Man", "Our Man in Havana" and "Odd Man Out" he made "The Running Man" (no Arnie!), which Mick covers for Off the Shelf, which also has Aidan covering the Canadipocalypse thriller "Def-Con 4".

Stay tuned for an exciting new mutation in our director's lottery series... (and no, it's not "The New Mutants" because that will never be released).
