  • 238: Jojo Rabbit + Little Women (2019) + Cats (2019)
    Jennifer Hudson's Floating Face

Cinema Eclectica is back and refreshed for 2020, and we have such sights to show you. That Hellraiser quite isn't accidental by the way, because one of "sights" is the movie adaptation of a certain feline-based musical.

Before that though, there are two major new releases to attend to. One of them is Taika Waititi's divisive comedy "Jojo Rabbit", where the Kiwi director and international treasure plays a young boy's imaginary friend, but it's 1945 and the boy is German, so his imaginary friend is obviously Hitler. After that we have a less dicey proposition (taste-wise that is), comes with Greta Gerwig's adaptation of "Little Women". It's got an all-star cast of women of assorted sizes (as well as some token men), but what did Sarah think of it?

Finally it's Graham's turn to suit-up and dive into the deepest point of the uncanny valley, where he discovers Tom Hooper's against-type career swerve into seemingly-Lovecraftian horror, "Cats".

Jason DeRulo IS Rum Tum Tugger (he says, as though he understands any of these words).

  • 237: Favourite Films of 2019 (5-1): Christmas Minisode 3
Our final mini episode of 2019 is actually longer than many of our normal-length efforts, and we make no apology for that because it's time for our top 5 films of 2019!

Will any of our selections match up? Who will have had time to sit through all of The Irishman? Who will use the word 'idiolect'? All of your questions will be answered! First, though, there's the small matter of counting down our least favourite films of the year. We say 'small', but this year it's quite big. Rob did not have a good year. Still, we've got high hopes for 2020!

  • 236: Favourite Films of 2019 (10-6): Christmas Minisode 2
     Support Your Local Mobster

After the giddy daftness of last week's alternative Christmas movies, Rob, Aidan, Sarah and Graham convene for the extremely serious business of their Best of the Year lists. Counting down from 10 to 6, we find out the answer to so many burning questions. Who will have the most depressing documentaries on their list? Who's giving Netflix Originals a second chance? How long will it take Rob to get a simple pun? And who will be accused of vivisecting people? (Falsely, we insist!) There's also a run-down of the classic films we saw for the first time this year.

  • 235: Whacked Out Christmas Movies: 2019 Christmas Minisode 1
    The Judgment of Mr Anderson

The first of our seasonal mini-episodes has Aidan, Rob and Graham raising a glass of various nog-based beverages to unconventional Christmas movies.

Rob has the recently rediscovered French cult classic "Dial Code: Santa Claus" (or whichever one of its many titles it's going by), Graham has the pleasingly sacrilegious "The Day of the Beast", and Aidan gets scuzzy with punk rock oddity "Emerald Cities". Then there's a round-up of our favourite home releases of the year, including titles from Criterion, Second Sight, the BFI and Second Run. Join us on Christmas Eve for the first part of our countdown of the year's best new films!

  • 234: Ildiko Enyedi + Werewolf + Der Golem - Eclectica #234
A Right Laugh for the Dogs

We liked last week's director's lottery so much we decided to do another one, with glorious Hungarian madwoman Ildiko Enyedi coming out of the hat. Graham and Tim take a look at her 1994 film "Magic Hunter", which blends Gary Kemp, enchanted bullets, Marian apparitions and time travel into a unified tapestry of cult-ready weirdness.

In Off the Shelf has Tim covering the post-WWII survival horror "Werewolf" (which is out on Blu-Ray from Montage pictures), while Mick looks at that masterpiece of cinema and disaster of hairdressing - Eureka's new 4K restoration of "Der Golem". There's also a round-up of Christmas releases at UK cinemas, and news about our special festive minisodes ...

  • 233: Knives Out + The Irishman + The Nightingale - Eclectica #233
The Man With All The Southern Drawls

It may be one of precisely three films ever to top Sight & Sound's poll of the greatest movies of all time, but what you've all really been waiting for is for Vittorio de Sica's "Bicycle Thieves" to be subjected to the patented dumbass Eclectica treatment. And you're in luck because that's at the top of the show this week, before an Irishman, an Irishwoman and an Englishman torture a Deep South accent while they stroll into our second half.

Okay, it#s not much of a joke, but with a peerless line-up of new releases that has Sarah running her magnifying glass over Rian Johnston's "Knives Out", Aidan non-digitally aging as he tackles the epic running time of Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman", and Graham passing judgment on Jennifer Kent's follow-up to "The Babadook" - the brutal and chilling "The Nightingale".

  • 232: Judy & Punch + Tommy + Privilege + Hair - Eclectica #232
A Nice Meander With Mike Leander

    Knock knock.

    Who's there?

Yes, that's right - but in the second half of the show.

First, Sarah, Graham and Aidan review show favourite Mia Wasikowska's new film "Judy & Punch". Medieval puppeteer revenge black comedy is, of course, a tough genre to pull off, so is this the way to do it?

Aidan kicks off the second half of the show with the reissue of "Tommy" - the legendary collaboration between Ken Russell and The Who. After that it's Graham's turn to get polemical with Peter Watkins's dystopian "Privilege", before Sarah rounds things off with a brand new BFI Blu-Ray of the late Milos Forman's "Hair".

The film he made called "Hair", not an actual lock of his hair. Although we'd probably review that too.

  • 231: Little Monsters + The Cop, The Gangster, The Devil - Eclectica #231
Mr Stewart Goes To Dawson's Creek

Lupita Nyong'o continues her casual dominance of all media from Marvel blockbusters to Channel 4 documentaries with this week's headline film "Little Monsters". with Rob, Aidan and Graham joining the tour bus headed for Camp Zombie before taking a detour for a typically wild ride in Off the Shelf.

Rob begins on his cinematic home turf of South Korea in "The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil", while Aidan attempts to overcome his resistance to 1950s Westerns with Arrow Academy's Anthony Mann/Jimmy Stewart collaboration "The Far Country". Finally, Graham is pinned down and throttled by a legend of the documentary form - "The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On", which is out now from Second Run.

  • 230: Apocalypse Now: Final Cut + Samuel Fuller + Luce - #230 Eclectica
    Das Foot Asylum

"Luce" is our academically-gifted film of the week, and true to form we've all been doing our homework. For Graham that means, er, watching the Film of the Week - but don't assume Mick and Tim have been sat on their hands.

A frankly gargantuan Off the Shelf sees Mick review Eureka's "Fuller at Fox" box set and Tim review Studiocanal's Blu-Ray of "Apocalypse Now: Final Cut". That's five films by one of this show's favourite directors, and every single cut of the most ambitious war film ever made. Can you handle it? We can because we're trained podcast professionals.

  • 229: Doctor Sleep + The Invitation + Support the Girls - Eclectica #229
     The Duran Duran of Horror

Return to the Overlook Hotel (oh, go on! It's got nice carpets!), with Mike Flanagan's "Doctor Sleep", which this week falls under the unforgiving Kubrick stares of Sarah and Rob. Prepare to find out the Cagney & Lacey/Stephen King connection you never knew existed!

Off the Shelf looks at the work of two cult 2010s directors, with Graham accepting Karyn Kusama's "The Invitation" - out on Blu-Ray from Second Sight, and Sarah learning a new word - a baleful, dispiriting new word - as she checks out Andrew Bujalski's "Support The Girls", from Bulldog.
