  • 228: Halloween Special + Last Black Man in San Francisco - Eclectica #228
2019 Halloween Special: CUT! Polly Wants a Cracker!

It's our Halloween special, and the only horror film in cinemas involves a phone app that kills you. That's as good a reason as any to do "The Last Black Man In San Francisco", Joe Talbot's warmly received debut. It is not, as you may think, a remake of I Am Legend.

Proper scary stuff comes in the second half, with a trinity of movies based on the work of legendary horror authors. Rob takes a look at Robert Wise's "The Haunting", based on the novel by Shirley Jackson, and Graham has "Alucarda", based extraordinarily loosely on Sheridan le Fanu's Carmilla. It's not a true Halloween without Stephen King, and Aidan has Eureka's new edition of "The Dark Half" - but if you think that's all the Kingage we have to offer, tune in next week ...

  • 227: The Laundromat + Singin' in the Rain + Eating Raoul - Eclectica #227
The Humongous Fungus Walks Among Us

Hijinks with the international tax system! It's not the most obvious pitch, but Steven Soderbergh isn't the most obvious director, and he's a cast of stars - Streep, Oldman, Banderas, Schoenarts - to sell you on this frankly insane premise. The result, "The Laundromat", is out on Netflix - but were Graham, Aidan and Sarah buying it?

Off the Shelf has a gooey centre made of Sarah's love for "Singin' In The Rain", Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly's timeless musical comedy, back in a cinema near you. Surrounding it are two black comedies from Criterion UK. First, Graham finds nothing to sniff at in John Waters's scratch-n-sniff spoof "Polyester", then Aidan doesn't pan Paul Bartel's "Eating Raoul". Look, the puns aren't as good as usual this week, we know that. But the Tab Hunter trivia is through the roof!

  • 226: The Day Shall Come + Angel Heart + Skinner - Eclectica #226
3 Seconds Less of Mickey Rourke's Buttocks

After pursuing the unexpected connection between "Doctor Dolittle" and "White Dog" (and seriously, wouldn't any connection between those two be unexpected?) Graham and Aidan tackle Chris Morris's long-awaited follow-up to "Four Lions". "The Day Shall Come" has an American setting and Anna Kendrick, but does it still have what makes Morris great?

If you've forgotten what time of year it is, Off the Shelf will remind you that it's coming up to Halloween. Aidan looks at StudioCanal's 4K restoration of Alan Parker's "Angel Heart", complete with Mickey Rourke buttock anecdotes. Graham has something even more twisted in the form of 101 Films's Blu-Ray of Ivan Nagy's "Skinner", which is one of those films with A Story behind it.

  • 225: Joker + Sammo Hung + The Godfather Part III - Eclectica #225
    100% Dinge Gotham

This week Mick, Graham and Aidan take a dark voyage into the twisted mind of Batman's greatest enemy Clownface McGinty in Todd Phillips's "Joker". It's weathered all sorts of controversy - interview walk-outs, copycat violence panics, coming from the director of Due Date - but allow us the indulgence of reviewing the movie that the headlines are attached to.

In Off the Shelf, Mick takes on a triple set of Sammo Hung from Eureka - "Iron-Fisted Monk", "The Magnificent Butcher" and "Eastern Condors" - before Aidan tries to persuade us that "The Godfather Part III", pre-Phantom Menace holder of the title Most Disappointing Film Evah, is actually good.

  • 224: Ready or Not + Naked Kiss + Vagabond - Eclectica #224
    The Old White Stripes Manoeuvre

This week Rob and Graham seek out "Ready or Not", the buzzy new horror-comedy from V/H/S's Radio Silence collective. It's been hailed by the online horror community, but Rob's been burned that way many times before so does this hit the mark?

Off the Shelf sees us return to a show favourite director - the legendary Samuel Fuller - with Graham reviewing Criterion's new Blu-Ray of "The Naked Kiss". Meanwhile, Rob continues his voyage into the works of the late Agnes Varda with 1985's "Vagabond".

There's also - and I know you're all excited by this - some talk of DVD menu screens. Oh yes.

  • 223: Holy Motors + Ad Astra + The Kitchen + More - Eclectica #223
    Denis Lavant's Live Action CV

Limousines! Kylie! CGI rubber dragon sex! It can only be Leos Carax's "Holy Motors" getting the Eclectica treatment from Aidan, Sarah and Graham. Deep thoughts will be had about religion, cinema and literature. Less-deep thoughts will be had about Denis Lavant's old chap.

Elsewhere, there are new releases to be covered. Graham jets off with James Gray's "Ad Astra", as well as some less expensive but no less arduous travel in Werner Herzog's "Nomad". Sarah, meanwhile, reviews '70s-set crime thriller "The Kitchen" and also talks about a woman who married the Golden Gate Bridge, because any show that starts with Holy Motors isn't going to end up in a normal place.

  • 222: Midnight Cowboy + The Dogs of War + We the Animals - Eclectica #222
The Method Toolbox of Dustin Hoffman

Aidan and Mick saddle up and join the posse of the "Midnight Cowboy" to explore the seedy underbelly of late '60s New York. Meanwhile, "The Dogs of War" offers the intriguing proposition of an action movie that isn't an action movie, but how could such a thing be possible? We thought the answer might be found in the bosom of Buddha, but "It Was A Faint Dream". Finally, we wake up with a start to find Graham wrestling with family issues in "We The Animals".

Which makes a change from the leopards he normally wrestles.

  • 221: IT: Chapter Two + Battle Royale 2 + Comes A Horseman - Eclectica #221
    Load Bearing Clown

Is it Pensive Staring Chapter Two or Creepy Spooky Fun Time With Bill Skarsgård, Chapter Two? Whatever we think of our feature film, this week, Andrew, Prob and Aidan talk the blockbuster horror release of the summer in "It: Chapter Two": The Revengening.

After that, Aidan talks about BFI's release of the Alan Pakula western, "Comes A Horseman". Following that, Andrew makes the ultimate sacrifice by watching partaking in a bit of morbid curiosity by watching "Battle Royale 2".

Is it as bad as people say? Yes, yes it is - but you'll have to tune in to find out just how much.

  • 220: Slacker + Flight of the Navigator + The Hidden (1987) + More ... - Eclectica #220
Alien Yuppie Slugs Just Wanna Have Fun

It came from beyond the stars, or at least from South of Yorkshire - which is the same thing for us. Second Sight's new Blu-Ray restoration of "Flight of the Navigator" prompts an '80s sci-fi special, with Tim tackling Randal Kleiser's children's classic while Rob covers John Sayles's "Brother From Another Planet" and Graham gets in touch with his inner coked-up yuppie for "The Hidden".

Before that, there's the not-so-small matter of last week's Director's Lottery, which came out with Richard Linklater. We plumped for his none-more-90s debut film "Slacker", paying homage to its unique meandering structure by having one of us getting lost in the internet and the others chatting about conspiracy theories for a bit.

    It's a deliberate homage, honest.

  • 219: Pedro Almodovar's Pain & Glory + The Ear (Ucho) - Eclectica #219
Where's My Mamma Roma in Your Pain & Glory?

This week Graham and Aidan tackle Pedro Almodóvar's new semi-autobiographical film "Pain and Glory", but even though it's one of his most garlanded films in ages, we have to wonder how much pain we're talking about, and what percentage is glorious?

Off the Shelf has a Second Run double-bill, with Aidan covering the new Blu-Ray of Karel Kachyna's paranoia-fest "The Ear", before Graham faces up to his own challenge with Marc Isaacs's cult documentary "Philip and His Seven Wives".

So three rich, complex, and challenging films - but don't worry because next week we might be able to slack off.
