  • 258: 1917 + Bombshell + Misbehaviour + The Invisible Man (2020) + Greed
It's been a while since we did a B-sides show - those intermittent collections of new cinema releases that we didn't cover at the time of release. And that's largely because, er, there aren't any cinemas open - but that doesn't stop Sarah, Rob and Graham from having some films from January, February and March to consider.

For Rob, there's two of the biggest films of the year - Sam Mendes's World War One-Take epic 1917 and Leigh Whannel's revisionist take on The Invisible Man. Sarah has Michael Winterbottom's Greed, starring Steve Coogan as Not Philip Green, and true-life sexual harassment drama Bombshell. She and Graham also cover Misbehaviour, in which a frankly huge ensemble tell the story of the protests at the 1970 Miss World pageant. Give us a twirl.

  • 257: After Midnight + Eeb Allay Ooo! + Crazy World
IRL festivals might be off this summer, but there's still We Are One - a ten-day YouTube banquet of the best of the recent festival circuit. Before we get to that, Rob's got a review of After Midnight, a new streaming release from Arrow Films. We don't want to jinx this, but this might be the rare hotly-tipped new indie horror film that Rob likes!

Our We Are One kicks off with Graham looking at some of the short films on offer, before taking on one of the breakouts of the festival: Prateek Vats's Indian satire Eeb Allay Ooo! In any other week, a comedy-drama about monkey-scaring might be the oddest film on offer. This week, however, we must reckon with Rob's attempt to review the unreviewable: Nabwana I.G.G.'s karaoke Ugandan family kung-fu opus Crazy World. It sure is.

  • 256: The Scarlet Letter (1995) + Battlefield Earth + World War Z
This week's Cinema Eclectica is devoted entirely to Badaptations - those times when, in between the page and the screen, something vital goes missing. Graham's choice is 1995's The Scarlet Letter, in which one of the most introverted and spiritual of 19th-century novels is turned into a Demi Moore bonkbuster. Hester Prynne isn't the only one suffering from lack of fidelity.

Being too faithful to the source can also be an issue, as Aidan discovers when he reviews the slavishly accurate L Ron Hubbard adap Battlefield Earth. Hundreds of people worked on this film and not one of them challenged John Travolta on his outfit. Finally Rob rounds us out with World War Z, a classic case of Hollywood buying up a cult bestseller, realising it can't be turned into a PG-13 action movie, then going ahead and doing it anyway.

  • 255: Akira Kurosawa + The Family Way + Maurice
We didn't plan this as a special, but two of our three films for review this week feature Barry Foster from the original series of Van Der Valk. See if you can guess which one doesn't as we kick off with Akira Kurosawa's 1949 Japanese film noir Stray Dog, then move on to two British films!

After we find out who's mad enough to steal Toshiro Mifune's gun, Mick reviews StudioCanal's Blu-Ray of The Family Way, a 1960s comedy-drama with Hayley Mills and her dad John. Music by some Scouse longhair called McCartney, apparently. Then Graham takes a look at Curzon Home Cinema's Merchant-Ivory restorations, challenging his own resistance to the period-drama-dominating duo with 1987's daring romance Maurice. Prime early Hugh Grant hair is involved.

  • 254: Bong Joon-Ho Special!
Final boss of the Oscars and forever king of our hearts Bong Joon-ho gets an Eclectica special to celebrate the news that Snowpiercer is finally, finally getting a physical media release in the UK from Lionsgate. Originally shot in... what, about 1872? Shortly before the invention of cinema? It's held up well, anyway.

For the second half of the show, the hosts bring in personal favourite Bong hits, with Tim looking at his giant mutant tadpole classic The Host. For Graham, Bong became the daddy with Mother, in 2009, while Mark takes on his all-star vegetarian satire Okja. The Cannes audience's decision to boo the Netflix logo really aged well, didn't it?There's also a Question of the Week celebrating great movie vehicles, and a director's lottery for next week.

  • 253: Ema + The 1,000 Eyes of Dr Mabuse + Adult Life Skills
This isn't quite Cinema Eclectica's dance special, but it gets weirdly close - with Pablo Larrain's psychosexual reggaeton epic Ema as Film of the Week, and a Question of the Week about your favourite cinematic dance scenes. The answers take in everyone from Gene Kelly and Ginger Rogers to Greta Gerwig and Adam Curtis.

Elsewhere, Rob takes a look at Fritz Lang's final film, The 1,000 Eyes of Dr. Mabuse, a throw-back to his silent days now reissued on Eureka Masters of Cinema. Streaming Spotlight, meanwhile, sees Graham reviewing Adult Life Skills, the cult British comedy that's just resurfaced on Netflix. As for next week - THAT'S going to be a special...

  • 252: Circus of Books + Vivarium + Why Don't You Just Die!
Given the current *waves hand around to indicate everything*, streaming has quickly become an even more central part of the cinema release calendar. With that in mind, Cinema Eclectica presents its first streaming special, with interweb-based reviews from Rob, Mick and - until his Virgin Media signal collapses - Graham! (Of course this would happen on our streaming episode)

Join the gang for reviews of outrageous Netflix documentary Circus of Books from producer Ryan Murphy, weird suburbia in Lorcan Finnegan's debut Vivarium, and one-location Russian horror-comedy freakout Why Don't You Just Die! There's also a Question of the Week about your favourite Netflix originals, during which the words "Roma" and "Irishman" are honestly mentioned less times than you might expect.

  • 251: Seven Chances + Dreamland + The Wind + Bond Retrospective 6
We don't review many romantic comedies on this show, but when we do... Buster Keaton's typically eccentric take on the genre is our film of the week, with Eureka's new Blu-Ray of Seven Chances under Graham, Sarah and Tim's respective microscopes.

In more characteristic features, Graham has The Wind from Arrow Video. It's a slasher from Niko Mastorakis, a man with an amazing life story and a spot on the video nasties list. Defying all conventions, on the other hand, Tim has Dreamland, a surrealist vampire neo-noir from the director of Pontypool. And Mark's Bond retrospective hits the Daniel Craig era, its final instalment... until November.

  • 250: Rosemary's Baby + Ron Ormond + The Whalebone Box + Bond Retrospective 5
This week, Cinema Eclectica pitches its revivalist tent in the wild world of religious cinema, with Graham looking at the three films born-again exploitation movie director Ron Ormond made with fire-and-brimstone preacher Estus W Pirkle. On the other end of every possible scale, the Devil made Rob review Rosemary's Baby, Roman Polanski's classic Satanic chiller. Quite the classiest thing with a William Castle production credit, there.

Mark's Bond retrospective, this week, covers the highs and lows of Pierce Brosnan's tenure. At first he looked inwincible, then he got the keys to an invisible car. And our new feature Streaming Spotlight looks at the glut of new films diverted to online releases during lockdown - kicking off with Andrew Kötting's The Whalebone Box, out now on Mubi.

  • 249: Il Divo + The Truth (2019) + Villain (1971) + Bond Retrospective 4
We at Eclectica were self-isolating before it was cool, so COVID-19 isn't going to stop us. Instead we've got another entry in our Director's Lottery series, which came out with Paolo Sorrentino and his twisty, paranoid biopic of former Italian PM Guilio Andreotti, 2008's Il Divo. What do Graham and Tim think?

Fortunately we do have some new releases to bring you, with Eclectica fave Hirokazu Kore-eda's first film outside Japan, The Truth, released to stream. Aidan takes a look at that one, and Mick has Vintage Classics' new Blu-Ray of Richard Burton's gangland thriller Villain. There's also Mark's Bond retrospective, which this week hits the brief but fascinating Dalton era.
