  • 268: Funeral Parade of Roses + The Fifth Element + The Messenger
Another Director's Lottery week, another chance for Tim, Mick, Rob and Graham to tear the show apart over the merits (or demerits) of a classic film - this time Toshio Matsumoto's punk-as-hell queer Oedipus Rex modernisation Funeral Parade of Roses. And if you think that sentence was a lot to take on board, wait until you hear the impassioned armchair debate. That's not debate conducted from armchairs. That's debate ABOUT armchairs.

Off the Shelf has two Blu-Ray reissues from Luc Besson's '90s work, as Studio Canal offer Tim and Mick the chance to reassess The Fifth Element and The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc. Were we right to be irritated by Chris Tucker's performance in the former? Or to ignore the latter entirely? Find out on Cinema Eclectica, currently plotting our first trip to the cinema since March...

  • 267: Beggars of Life + Host + Inception
All aboard the Louise Brooks train for the silent cinema legend's wildest, nastiest and undeniably most hobo-packed outing: 1928's Beggars of Life. Director William Wellman was coming off the back of the first-ever Best Picture Oscar winner, Wings. Is this a worthy successor?

Off the Shelf kicks off with a sad reminder that other people have been using their lockdown time more productively than you, with Rob Savage's Zoom-shot horror Host. And we also double back to 2010 for Christopher Nolan's Inception, which is being re-released in cinemas, which are large buildings which show films on screens that are bigger than televisions. Just in case anyone had forgotten.

  • 266: Flash Gordon + Open 24 Hours + Fish Story
OK, place your bets now: how long before someone does a Brian Blessed impersonation? This week's Cinema Eclectica is headlined by Mike Hodges outrageous Flash Gordon - and if you think the director of Get Carter was an odd choice, wait until you hear who nearly directed it.

In Off the Shelf, Tim takes a look at the new VoD slasher movie Open 24 Hours, which makes a persuasive case for anyone who buys a sou'wester to be put on a police register of some kind. Mick, meanwhile, is dazzled by the time-hopping cross-cutting genius of Fish Story, released in a new Blu-Ray edition by Third Window films. Next week: hobos!

  • 265: Nuits Rouges + Film Title Poem + Dance Girl Dance
Put on your best old lady disguise and alert your ninja secretaries! Our director's lottery came out with Georges Franju recently, which means this week Tim and Graham are watching his deliriously silly pulp oddity Nuits Rouges, aka Shadowman. Is this final film from the Eyes Without a Face director a lost treasure?

Two very different films from female directors make up this week's Off the Shelf. Graham has Film Title Poem, a Mubi exclusive from rising star of experimental animation (yes, "star" is a relative term here) Jennifer West. Sarah reviews Criterion UK's Blu-Ray of Dorothy Arzner's Dance Girl Dance, starring Lucille Ball as you've never seen her before! Unless you've seen her do burlesque before. We don't know what our listeners get up to in their private lives.

  • 264: The Old Guard + Throw Down
A tale of two action movies on this week's Eclectica. On the one hand, you have the huge Netflix-funded star vehicle The Old Guard, starring Charlize Theron and Chiwetel Ejiofor. On the other, you have the smaller, foreign-language judo film Throw Down, directed by Johnnie To and released on Blu-Ray by Eureka Masters of Cinema.

Could the smaller, less formidable opponent possibly defeat the muscular big beast? If only there was some sort of metaphor from the field of judo to help us understand this conflict. Still, other than that, we've also got a fun Question of the Week about villains you want to recast. This podcast may not be suitable for Jesse Eisenberg.

  • 263: The People Under the Stairs + The Beast Must Die
A double-bill of genre-bending horror movies this week, which makes it all the stranger that we struggled to think of recommendations to watch with our Film of the Week. Sometimes we are very dumb.

Said Film of the Week is the latest product of our Directors Lottery system, Wes Craven's The People Under the Stairs, in which the progenitor of Freddy Krueger gets flesh-ripping mad about Reaganomics. In Off the Shelf, Tim has a transatlantic counterpart with Indicator's new Blu-Ray edition of 1974's The Beast Must Die. It's a werewolf whodunnit with Peter Cushing, which is a thing we didn't know we needed but it turns out we do.

  • 262: The Assistant + Family Romance LLC + The Whistlers
Cinema Eclectica is back for another round-up of the latest streaming titles, this week taking in America and Romania via Japan. First up, Rob lauds Julia Garner's performance in #MeToo drama The Assistant, then Graham is off to Tokyo with frequent flier Werner Herzog for his haunting new film Family Romance LLC. Are there Herzog impersonations in this review? Gosh, we'd hate to spoil it for you.

Finally it's back to Rob, who finds a new respect for a movement - the Romanian New Wave - that hasn't thrilled us in the past. But Corneliu Poromboiu's The Whistlers isn't your standard Romanian film, not least because its dialogue is in English, Spanish... and whistling. No, really.

  • 261: The Phantom Carriage + A Foreign Affair + White Fire + Female Trouble
This week's podcast is a slow swan-dive from arthouse bliss into a swamp of sleaze, starting - after a Question of the Week that baits the Oscars more than Stephen Daldry - with Victor Sjöström's The Phantom Carriage. An inspiration to Ingmar Bergman and Stanley Kubrick, it still holds up nearly a century later.

Off the Shelf starts out well enough, with Billy Wilder's sparky post-war rom-com A Foreign Affair from Eureka Masters of Cinema. Then Rob has the interesting task of reviewing an incest-themed chainsaw-wielding Turkish action movie. That's White Fire, out on Arrow Video, before Sarah rounds off with Criterion's Blu-Ray of Female Trouble. John Waters. Divine. You know what to expect.

  • 260: Wasp Network + The Vast of Night + Criss Cross + Dream Demon
Fans of podcasts where two people can't agree on a single film, your ship has come in, because this week Graham and Tim are reviewing Olivier Assayas's divisive Netflix original Wasp Network! Which reviewer compared it to "a Communist version of The A-Team"? And, more importantly, did they mean it as a criticism or a compliment?

Elsewhere Tim reviews Amazon Prime's low-budget SF hit The Vast of Night. Graham has classic noir from Eureka Masters of Cinema with Criss Cross - did it make him jump, jump? - and Mick drops by to review Arrow Video's reissue of Dream Demon, an 80s horror laden with before-they-were-famous appearances.

There's also a Question of the Week celebrating the late Ian Holm, and some contributions from the blackbirds nesting in Graham's back garden. Because we can all meet up outdoors now, I guess.

  • 259: La Strada + Radioactive + Citizens of the World + Da 5 Bloods
Does anyone want a podcast about famous directors' Instagram feeds? While we workshop that, there's a lot to get through this week, not least a review of Federico Fellini's landmark film La Strada. Where does it end up in our Fellini power rankings?

After a Question of the Week about road movies, we've got a triple-bill of new streaming releases. Sarah reviews Marjane Satrapi's biopic of Marie Curie - Radioactive - while Graham has probably the least stressful time of the week with Curzon's new Italian comedy Citizens of the World. No such luck for Rob, who has a harrowing, politically-charged trip to Vietnam with Spike Lee's Da 5 Bloods. Next week: wasps!
