  • 1: Welcome to Pop Screen!
Tomorrow sees the launch of The Geek Show's new podcast Pop Screen. But what is a Pop Screen, and why should I listen? Not to worry, here's Graham with a quick explainer.

  • 277: FINAL EPISODE - The Wicker Man (1973) + The Shining + More
It's time for our Halloween special, and it's a very special Halloween special this year. Not only is it our last episode, but we're reviewing our favourite horror movies! First up, Mick nearly breaks the purpose of the show by questioning whether The Wicker Man is a horror movie or not. Then Tim brings a late-period Hammer classic out of its sarcophagus with Blood From the Mummy's Tomb. In the second half of the show, Rob opens the book on Jennifer Kent's queer cinema milestone The Babadook, and finally Graham risks the wrath of Stephen King with Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. What better companion to a quiet five months in?

Not that we plan to be gone for that long. Cinema Eclectica may be over, but we've got two - two! - new movie podcasts coming your way in 2021. Thanks so much for all your listens, shares, reviews, Question of the Week answers and so much more over the last five years, and come January we're looking forward to seeing you all again!

If you want to help us make the big changes we're currently working on, our Patreon is here. Don't forget to check in at the main site for exclusive reviews, and we'll see you in 2021!

  • 276: Morgiana + Mafia Inc. + Helmut Newton: The Bad and the Beautiful
Our last Director's Lottery* sees us tackle one of Graham's beloved Czechoslovak New Wave directors - Juraj Herz, the thrilling maniac behind The Cremator. We chose his 1972 Gothic fantasy Morgiana, which is less viciously political than his best-known film but equally mad, and equally replete with fish-eye lenses.

In Off the Shelf, Rob reviews Mafia Inc., a French-Canadian gangland epic by Podz. That's it, just Podz. We're perplexed too. There's also a review from Graham about Helmut Newton: The Bad and the Beautiful, documenting the controversial career of the German fashion photographer and containing the best Grace Jones interview since, well, probably since whatever the last one was. Also Rob has enjoyed a VoD horror movie, so don't let this historic event pass you by!

  • 275: Kinji Fukasaku + The Other Lamb + Circus of Horrors
We've got a big announcement about our Director's Lottery feature this week, but for now we're rolling as usual. Last week's pick was Kinji Fukasaku, and from his ridiculously prolific career we picked Yakuza Papers vol 2: Hiroshima Death Match. If you think that's a full-on title, wait til you see the relentlessly action-packed film.

Off the Shelf sees Graham review Mubi's latest theatrical and streaming release, Malgorzata Szumowska's atmospheric cult-themed chiller The Other Lamb. For an altogether more, uh, full-bodied horror experience Studio Canal have reissued 1960's Circus of Horrors on Blu-Ray. Mick takes a look at that, and we end by finding the connection between Carl Th. Dreyer and Hammer Studios. Because of course we do.

  • 274: The Getaway (1972) + Miss Virginia
Graham and Rob hit the road in a stolen car - figuratively, in case our mums are listening to this - to review Sam Peckinpah's 1970s crime classic The Getaway. Starring Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw, written by Walter Hill and Jim Thompson, and with didgeridoos by Quincy Jones, it's got a hell of a pedigree.

At the notably less scuzzy end of cinema, Graham reviews the inspirational activist biopic Miss Virginia, with Uzo Aduba, and we discuss historical periods and events we'd like to see more movies about. Pop Screen is coming in 2021, but Cinema Eclectica isn't going quietly - the next two Director's Lotteries have been picked, and they're amazing! Listen to find out more...

  • 273: Bill and Ted Face the Music + Ghost Hunting + Enola Holmes
This week, Mark, Rob and Graham travel back in time to ask you what films from the 80s and 90s you want to see sequels to. Since Graham normally wields a furious banhammer over any 80s nostalgia, this can only mean one thing: it's Bill and Ted Face the Music! Keanu's back, Alex is back - but should you go back?

Off the Shelf has a packed week, with Second Run's new Blu-Ray of experimental Palestinian documentary Ghost Hunting surveilled by Rob. Pausing only to insult The Devil All the Time, Mark then checks out Enola Holmes. It's a Netflix YA Millie Bobby Brown vehicle that brings Fleabag energy to Sherlock. Imagine saying that sentence to someone ten years ago, they wouldn't have a clue what you were banging on about.

  • 272: Stagecoach + Made in Hong Kong
Which movie would you put in a space capsule for aliens to watch? That's the question we've put to you this week - knowing that, for a lot of people, it would be our Film of the Week. A thematically appropriate one, too, since John Ford's Stagecoach is more than accustomed to travelling across vast, hostile territory. The film that made John Wayne a star and birthed every Western cliche ever, how well does it hold up?

In Off the Shelf, Graham takes a look at a new Blu-Ray from Eureka Masters of Cinema - Fruit Chan's Made in Hong Kong. A low-key take of aspiring neighbourhood criminals, it was the first film made in post-British-colony Hong Kong, and boy is it ever an interesting time to talk about that. Join us next week when - we can now confirm - our Film of the Week will be Bill and Ted Face the Music! Probably!

  • 271: I'm Thinking of Ending Things + La Haine + The New Mutants
Settle in for your next long, long car drive with Cinema Eclectica! This week, Rob and Graham are reviewing Charlie Kaufman's Netflix original, I'm Thinking of Ending Things. Opening up questions like "What is the nature of time?", "Are any of us truly unique?" and "What's with the pig anyway?", it gives us plenty to chew over.

Our increasingly inappropriately named Off the Shelf section sees us make two trips to the cinema, as Rob checks out the 25th anniversary of Matthieu Kassovitz's French gangland classic La Haine. A film that merely feels like it was made 25 years ago, meanwhile, is The New Mutants, the intended trilogy opener that instead marks the end of Fox's X-Men series. We've got Mick and Andrew in from our sister show 4Panel to look at that one.

  • 270: Koko-Di Koko-Da + Vitalina Varela
Wind up the music box and make sure you're camping on a reputable campsite, Cinema Eclectica is reviewing Johannes Nyholm's time-loop horror Koko-Di Koko-Da this week. A festival favourite that's proved more divisive among - is it insulting to say normal people? Probably - normal people, what do Graham and Rob make of it?

Off the Shelf sees Rob open another puzzle box, this time Second Run's new Blu-Ray Vitalina Varela. The latest from Portuguese auteur Pedro Costa, he finds it a forbidding place to start. It's no wonder we had confusion all up in our minds this week, a feeling we exorcised with a Question of the Week that asked what movies baffled you the most.

  • 269: Tenet + Beanpole
Cinema Eclectica is a little different this week - and it's not just because we're risking another bad review from Covid-19 by going back into the cinema. It's because we've arranged the show backwards to accomodate our Film of the Week, Tenet - so those of you who want to go in completely cold can enjoy the rest of the show before we start discussing it in the second half.

For the rest of you, Andrew, Rob and Graham are here to review Christopher Nolan's Saviour of the Theatrical Experience™ plus a new physical release from Mubi, Kantemir Balegov's Cannes hit Beanpole. There's also a Question of the Week about comedians you think deserve a better shot at big screen glory, and a lot of references to Ghostbusters for some reason. We're still not entirely sure why.
