Welcome to Part 1 of a three part podcast series You, Me, the World & Poplar. We are take stock exchange and this is our first ever podcast. We are a community storytelling company, which means that we try to build connections, empathy and empowerment using storytelling and conversation.
This first podcast features three short stories about when we visited different groups of people who are connected to Poplar. We usually meet in person, visiting groups in community centres, schools, libraries... wherever they meet. But this time, at the time of this project that wasn’t possible, so we met them all remotely.
We’d like to thank the participants of the workshops, the organisers of each group we worked with, and the community of Poplar.
You can join the conversation at takestockexchange.co.uk, where you can leave your comments, thoughts and feedback. We’d love to hear what you have to say!
Thank you very much for listening.

Speaking with a passion and nostalgia far beyond his years, DJ Isuru joins Beth to share his love for the sounds, club nights and pioneers of the Asian Underground scene.
Originating in the 1990's and, thanks to Isuru, still going strong today, the Asian Underground defined music for generations of British-Asian people. With Isuru behind the decks, his monthly club night, Mishti Dance has expanded the scene, showcasing subversive and innovative performances from Asian drag queens, burlesque dancers and contemporary artists.
Your playlists will never sound the same again!

Beth was lucky enough to have a cup of tea in Eileen's front room, complete with a mantelpiece full of awards for the work she does in her neighbourhood. Have a listen and let her passion and enthusiasm spur you on to make a change in your own community.
Stinging nettle tea anyone? Tesco's run out of wild garlic? Fear not, Charlotte Gordon has got you sorted as she shares all her foraging wisdom from where to find the best street-side produce to when to look for it.
Even better, with her 'chef hat' on, Charlotte has some great recipe recommendations for all your foraged foods- kind to the planet, the wallet and your taste (and ear) buds!

If you look up fierce, pioneering and powerhouse in the dictionary, we're pretty sure there’s a picture of Sangeeta on each page. In two years, Sangeeta went from working the 9-5 city grind to writing her own book which was then adapted for the stage, creating an award winning podcast and running taboo breaking, sexually liberating workshops for South-Asian women internationally. She is unstoppable!
Poplar Union's Artistic Director, Beth Watton, caught up with Sangeeta back in 2019 and we hope you find this chat as enlightening and empowering as she did.

Following the 2018 publication of his book Ghost Trees: Nature and People in a London Parish, Bob has given talks and hosted film screenings at Poplar Union and has appeared on Radio 4 speaking about the beauty and surprising richness of the natural world found throughout London, and not just in the parks. Grab your walking boots and enjoy this one on the move!
