The world says that a King who suffers and dies is no King at all. We love Jesus as a Messiah who has come to show his supremacy but like Peter, we often reject a Messiah who suffers. The theology of glory seeks a King with a crown of gold not of thorns. The theology of the cross says, there can be no Christ without the cross.

In many ways, this is the riddle of the Old Testament foreshadowed and answered by Jesus in the New Testament. All of us as sinners live with tension in our relationship with God who alone is Holy. We can seek to relieve this tension through placing ourselves in the position of God, we can seek righteousness by trying to clean ourselves up or we can embrace the tension which draws us to the one who is both Just and the Justifier.
