In episode 87 I welcome one of my favorite writers to the show! Sarah Pinborough is a New York Times bestselling and Sunday Times Number one and Internationally bestselling author who is published in over 25 territories worldwide. Having published more than 27 novels across various genres, her recent books including Behind Her Eyes that was a viral sensation on Netflix in January 2021. Her most recent novel Insomnia is being developed for TV and she is adapting it herself. Her fiction includes horror, thrillers, historical, fantasy, dystopia and YA.

Sarah Pinborough is one of the few authors that I will follow in any book, or in any genre. Behind Her Eyes was heralded as the next “Gone Girl,” and certainly the last couple of books have subtle yet passionate feminism to them. In this interview, we talk about writing, her early horror novels, and building stories based on a twist, and in the last part we talk spoilers on Behind her Eyes and Insomnia.

Returning to the pod is the great Alma Katsu who is here to talk about  the novel she was writing and teased in her last appearance on the show.  The Fervor is a supernatural historical horror about the Japanese  internment camps during WW 2.   

Alma Katsu’s books have received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly,  Booklist, and Library Journal, been featured in the NY Times and  Washington Post, been nominated and won multiple prestigious awards, and  appeared on numerous Best Books lists including NPR, the Observer,  Barnes and Noble, Apple Books, Goodreads, and Amazon.  

RED WIDOW is her first spy novel,  was special because it drew on her  30-year career in intelligence. As an intelligence officer, She is most  well-known for novels that combine historical fiction with supernatural  and horror elements. THE HUNGER (2018), a reimagining of the story of  the Donner Party, was named one of NPR’s 100 favorite horror stories,  was on numerous Best Books of the Year lists, and continues to be  honored as a new classic in horror. On this special episode Of Postcards, I am stoked to welcome Writer, Producer, and director Brannon Braga. His first job in Hollywood was writing for Star Trek the Next Generation before being the showrunner of Voyager and Enterprise. He also wrote two films in the Star Trek franchise. In all, he had his name on more than 150 hours of Star Trek. A three-time Emmy nominee Braga is currently working on The Orville and Cosmos.

In episode 23 we chatted about his underrated adaptation of Clive Barker’s classic anthology series Books of Blood and Clive Barker in general. Brannon is first and foremost a writer and I enjoy getting under the hood of his projects and talk craft and process.

In this episode Brannon and I talk about Orville season three, we drill down on his episodes but there is tons of valuable insight into the season and the show in general. We talk about writers patience, The transgender storylines, writing for Dolly Parton, Sacrifice for ideals, not saving your life, Bortus, and Klyden reunion, and writing huge battles. Very excited to welcome fellow Hoosier Maurice Broaddus. He is the author of one of my favorite reads of the year - the first of a Afrofuturist space opera trilogy the Sweep of Stars.

Maurice Broaddus is a community organizer and teacher, his work has appeared in magazines like Lightspeed Magazine, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Asimov’s, Magazine of F&SF, and Uncanny Magazine, with some of his stories having been collected in The Voices of Martyrs. His books include the urban fantasy trilogy, The Knights of Breton Court, the steampunk works, Buffalo Soldier and Pimp My Airship, and the middle-grade, detective novels, The Usual Suspects and Unfadeable. His project, Sorcerers, is being adapted as a television show for AMC. As an editor, he’s worked on Dark Faith, Fireside Magazine, and Apex Magazine.

In this episode we talk about how Maurice got into writing, his early career and how this project came to be. It is mostly spoiler free. Although at some point I do suggest you pause if you have not read the book

Tim Lebbon is a British horror, science fiction and dark fantasy writer. The author of close to 50 novels ranging from The Silence to several media tie-ins franchises.  Lebbon's short story ″Reconstructing Amy″ won the Bram Stoker Award for Short Fiction in 2001, his novel Dusk won the 2007 August Derleth Award from the British Fantasy Society for best novel of the year. His novelization of the film 30 Days of Night became a New York Times bestseller and won a Scribe Award in 2008. The film Pay the Ghost starring Nicholas Cage is based on his short story of the same name. The Silence was made into a movie 2019 on Netflix. You can see Tim as a corpse in the film. His Firefly novel Generations (fourth in series) won the 2021 Dragon Award for Best Media Tie-In Novel.

Tim is joining us to talk about his brand new SF horror Cli-fi novel The Last Storm. We start by reviewing how Tim got into genre and writing, one of my all time favorite novels The Silence. Then we get into Tim’s fantastic new novel. There is a spoiler warning at some point but there is lots of interview before that.

In this episode, we talk about one of the most thought-provoking and controversial horror novels of the year with the author Gretchen  Felker-Martin. Manhunt is a brutal extreme horror novel as advertised.  The cover certainly should be warning enough. This novel has zero fucks  to give to any pearl-clutchers. That said it is also a character-driven story about a gender-specific apocalypse, and it might be the best one since the OG Alice Sheldon’s Screwfly Solution. The first one to really explore the issue from a trans point of view.  

I really enjoyed this conversation with Gretchen Felker-Martin who has had to put up with mountains of shit since this book was released.  Thankfully the people who have actually read it understand what she is trying to do. We don’t go heavy on spoilers but in this conversation, we talk about  Gretchen’s history with horror and writing. The construction of the novel, and the controversy a little bit. Honestly, I am much more interested in how this excellently written novel got constructed.

I am excited to be joined by Bev Vincent author and Stephen King expert on the show. Leading up to the forthcoming publication of Stephen King: A  Complete Exploration of his Work, Life, and Influences I thought it was a good time to chat with Bev.  Bev Vincent is the author of The Dark Tower Companion, The Road to the  Dark Tower, the Bram Stoker Award-nominated companion to Stephen King’s  Dark Tower series, and The Stephen King Illustrated Companion, which was nominated for a 2010 Edgar® Award and a 2009 Bram Stoker Award. 

In  2018, he co-edited the anthology Flight or Fright with Stephen King. His short fiction has appeared in places like Ellery Queen’s Mystery  Magazine, Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine, Borderlands 5, Ice Cold,  and The Blue Religion. Four stories were collected in When the Night  Comes Down and another four in a CD Select eBook. His story “The Bank  Job” won the Al Blanchard Award. “The Honey Trap” from Ice Cold was nominated for an ITW Thriller Award in 2015 and “Zombies On A Plane” was  nominated for an Ignotus Award in 2020.

Returning for our fourth season breakdown are, vocal Star Trek fan Sara Lynn Michener, Musician and filmmaker Issa Diao.

Listen to Sara slowly and patiently try to convince Issa and I that were wrong to not really like this season very much.  In the end she changed our minds about many things. We all agreed on many positive notes including the emotional finale.
