Welcome to a special bonus Top Ten list. Halloween 2022 is coming up and  I thought we should talk about ten horror fiction novels (ok two short stories and a bunch of novels) I would like to see made as movies. There  are some exciting adaptations coming up with Paul Tremblay’s Cabin at  the End of the World becoming a movie and we have recently seen Josh  Malerman and Tim Lebbon’s genius novel Bird box and The Silence get made. Sarah Pinbrough’s Behind her eyes and more. I think modern horror is covered  That’s why everything on this list is about 15 years or older. Also, I would love to adapt Lovecraft, Barker, or King but that  happens all the time so let's go a bit deeper.  

So here are ten projects I would want to make if Hollywood tapped me on the shoulder and said David make a horror movie based on something classic that already exists.  I would love to see any or all of these but they start at 10 and I become more passionate about them as we go.

The first of a couple of top-ten video bonus episodes I am going to do from time to time...  December 8th 2021 I published an article on Tor.com  called “Beyond Dune  and Foundation: Golden Age and New Wave SF Classics That Should Be  Adapted Right Now.” It has 72 comments and if I am being honest it is  likely the thing I have written that has been most widely read. For the fifth and final episode of the 1930s Science Fiction podcast, we  end on another SF-horror crossover the classic novella by H.P.  Lovecraft At the Mountains of Madness. While this remains one of the complicated horror master’s enduring classics. Written in 1931 the story was rejected by Weird Tales based on the length in 1936 it was published in three issues of Astounding magazine.   

 I am joined by two Lovecraft experts. Cody Goodfellow is the Wonderland award-winning novelist and long-time host of the popular Cthulhu prayer breakfasts held at the Lovecraft-inspired festivals on each coast. Fred  Lubnow is a scientist who does the blog Lovecraftian science.   

 In this episode, we talk about Lovecraft’s life, with a warts and all look at his biography. The history of weird tales and the rejection of the novella, the history of Astounding getting the classic tale, and then we break down the story itself.

Part 4 of the 1930s Science Fiction series…

In August of 1938 Astounding magazine ran a short story by the magazine’s own editor John W. Campbell under the pen-name Don A. Stuart. While the story was purchased by the magazine’s former editor this story Who Goes There would go on to become one of the all-time classics of Science Fiction and horror. It has inspired three movies already including the direct adaptation in 1982 by director John Carpenter into the cult classic The Thing.

Joining me for this episode is a powerhouse panel of guests Brian Keene author of The Rising and the Lost Level books, Mary Sangiovanni The queen of Cosmic Horror and author of the upcoming ALIEN: Enemy of my Enemy tie-in novel , and Tim Lebbon author of The Silence and one of my top reads of the year The Last Storm.

In July 1938 Astounding magazine under the editorship of John W. Campbell published a story for the first by future Grand master Clifford D. Simak. This story Rule-18 was not a classic, nor was it considered one of the great SF writer's better stories. OK, so why the hell are we covering it on this series devoted to classic SF stories classics of the 30s? The impact of this story is an interesting case. When the issue ran the story was dismissed in the letter column by a young fan from Brooklyn named Issac Asimov. Wanting to understand his issues with the story the elder Simak wrote Asimov and thus began a friendship. Re-reading the story to answer the letter, Asimov found the story worked; this experience is one he considered crucial to his development as a  writer.

So I invited Alec Nevala-Lee the author of Astounding (A history of the golden age SF) and Seth Heasley host of The Hugos There podcast to join me for this episode. None of us had read the story before.  Rule-18 is about a 24th-century football game between Mars and Earth.  In this discussion we talk about the story, the issue of Astounding it appeared in, John W. Campbell's relationship to the writers, the influence on Asimov, and we debate if this story should be canon.

In this second episode of the 1930s podcast series, I have dug into the vault to re-package a classic Dickheads podcast episode from our first season in 2018 when we were gathering in the studio.  In this episode, we cover 'Alas, All Thinking' by Harry Bates most famous for writing the story that inspired the Day the Earth Stood Still. Originally published in the June 1935 issue of Astounding Magazine, a young Philip K. Dick considered this one of his favorite Science Fiction stories and a major influence on his writing.

In November 1933 Weird Tales featured the first published science fiction of Catherine L. Moore, who wrote under the name CL Moore. This story Shambleau features a very cosmic horror style vampire and space rogue decades before Han Solo became a thing. This story has the elegant purple prose that Lovecraft was known for while at the same time featuring themes that would be considered lurid today.

In this episode we look into CL Moore’s life, growing up in my home state of Indiana, going to college walking distance from my childhood home, her first adventures in publishing, and then of course we talk about the story.

Featuring Cora Buhlert who won a Hugo award for best fan writer since we recorded this episode, and bestselling author and editor Greg Cox.

In episode 87 I welcome one of my favorite writers to the show! Sarah Pinborough is a New York Times bestselling and Sunday Times Number one and Internationally bestselling author who is published in over 25 territories worldwide. Having published more than 27 novels across various genres, her recent books including Behind Her Eyes that was a viral sensation on Netflix in January 2021. Returning to the pod is the great Alma Katsu who is here to talk about  the novel she was writing and teased in her last appearance on the show.  The Fervor is a supernatural historical horror about the Japanese  internment camps during WW 2.

On this special episode Of Postcards, I am stoked to welcome Writer, Producer, and director Brannon Braga. His first job in Hollywood was writing for Star Trek the Next Generation before being the showrunner of Voyager and Enterprise. He also wrote two films in the Star Trek franchise. In all, he had his name on more than 150 hours of Star Trek. A three-time Emmy nominee Braga is currently working on The Orville and Cosmos.

In episode 23 we chatted about his underrated adaptation of Clive Barker’s classic anthology series Books of Blood and Clive Barker in general. Brannon is first and foremost a writer and I enjoy getting under the hood of his projects and talk craft and process.

In this episode Brannon and I talk about Orville season three, we drill down on his episodes but there is tons of valuable insight into the season and the show in general. We talk about writers patience, The transgender storylines, writing for Dolly Parton, Sacrifice for ideals, not saving your life, Bortus, and Klyden reunion, and writing huge battles.
