  • Postmodern Realities Episode 169 The Jesus of Mormonism: Differences That Make a Difference
It is sometimes thought that while Mormonism and Christianity differ significantly, they both are Christ-centered. After all, the Mormon Church is named The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But appearances can be deceiving. Mormon leaders and teachers add to the confusion of Mormon theology with statements made in both their public dialogue and written commentary. While there may be many similarities between Christianity and Mormonism, such similarities are miniscule when analyzing the religions overall. For example, there are many theological terms in Mormonism that will be familiar to the Christian. Those terms, however, denote different meanings. The biblical Christ differs substantially from the Mormon Christ. In historic Christian theology, God is not simply that which is worshiped but that than which no greater can be conceived. In what is explained as Mormon anthropotheism, however, Mormons conflate human nature and divine nature not only in Christ but also in each of us, such that there is no distinct field of anthropology or theology to consider in Mormonism. As such, Mormon theology cripples Mormon Christology.

This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with Journal author Corey Miller about his 41:3 article, “The Jesus of Mormonism: Differences That Make a Difference”. https://www.equip.org/article/the-jesus-of-mormonism-differences-that-make-a-difference/

  • Postmodern Realities Episode 168 Best Selling Author and Astrologer Chani Nicholas Brings New Age Teaching to the Social Media Generatio
The New Age Movement has made a resurgence in 2020. Particularly popular for those claiming to be spiritual and not religious, we cannot write off New Age spirituality as something of the past. It is in the here and now, and even Christians are enticed by it. Astrologer Chani Nicholas is popular among the social media generation seeking spiritual enlightenment.
Nicholas, who just released her first book, You Were Born for This: Astrology for Radical Self-Acceptance, has one million monthly visitors to her website and recently appeared on the Netflix show Explained: Astrology. She is not only a voice for New Age spirituality, but as someone who emphasizes her feminism and sexuality, she connects with people from all types of backgrounds. The difficulty with Nicholas is that her mission seems to be pure, to help those who need guidance, but her ideas are dripping with New Age spirituality. Ultimately, according to Nicholas, our hope is not found in Christ, but in the stars.

  • Postmodern Realities Episode 167 Faithful Living Through the Coronavirus
“These are the times that try men’s souls,” wrote Thomas Paine in his rousing call to Americans to fight for independence. “The Crisis” was the title of Paine’s work from 1776; and now we face another crisis — not a war of man against man, but of a virus warring against all of humanity. Previous scares about Ebola, swine flu, and other viruses seem — to Americans, at least — small compared to the threat of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), which is currently terrifying the globe in March 2020. How might Christians keep a warm heart and a cool head during this crisis, when what we thought was solid seems to be melting away?

The New Age Movement has made a resurgence in 2020. Particularly popular for those claiming to be spiritual and not religious, we cannot write off New Age spirituality as something of the past. It is in the here and now, and even Christians are enticed by it. Teal Swan is popular among those in the social media generation who are seeking spiritual enlightenment.

Swan claims to have endured horrific sexual abuse at the hands of a satanic cult as a child and she uses her platform to help others overcome their own personal trauma. Recently, Swan was immersed in controversy, not only because she has no expertise in trauma other than her own experiences, but also because two of her followers reportedly committed suicide after listening to her lessons about suicide as a safety net. Swan’s popularity doesn’t seem to be waning, though. She has more than 675,000 YouTube subscribers and almost as many Facebook followers. She’s also the author of five books about self-healing and rediscovery.

Ultimately, according to Swan, our hope is not found in Christ, but within ourselves.

  • Postmodern Realities Episode 165 History’s Bloody Mess: Why Marxism (& Socialism) Always Fails
Marxism, rebranded as socialism or democratic socialism today, is making a comeback. And now the makeover is complete. But Karl Marx’s theory suffers the same malady as every materialistic theory: it contradicts the existence of the theorist. How should Christians apply a Christian ethic and world view to civic government? If Christians agree that the government cannot save people or fundamentally change human hearts, how is this an apologetic issue and not a political one? Topics covered in this episode include: Why does it matter that Christians need to have a biblical world view about government? How is socialism defined today? Social scientists say that the meaning of the word socialism can mean different things to different groups. For some it refers to FDR’s vision and his new deal programs in the USA in the 1930s for recovery from the Great Depression vs. socialism as practiced in the Soviet Union in the 20th century or today in Venezuela or North Korea. Is this only a semantical difference? Why have Marx’s views enjoyed a popular renaissance in American culture? What about the word “capitalism”? Where did it come from? Was the early church in Jerusalem communist or socialist?

This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with Journal author Jay Richards about his article from 41:2, “History’s Bloody Mess: Why Marxism (and Socialism) Always Fails”. https://www.equip.org/article/historys-bloody-mess-why-marxism-and-socialism-always-fails/

  • PMR Episode 164 What’s Pain Got to Do with It? Why Arguments over Fetal Pain Capability Ultimately Miss the Mark in the Abortion Debate
The pro-life argument isn’t that it is wrong to intentionally kill fetuses because they are capable of experiencing pain. Abortion is wrong because it intentionally kills innocent human beings. Even so, unborn babies as early as 20 weeks may feel pain intensely.

  • Postmodern Realities Episode 163 Merely Human: The Problem of Recognizing Chimpanzees as Persons
Christians are not averse, in principle, to the concept of nonhuman persons. We attribute personhood to the Trinity and to angels, clearly nonhuman beings. We recognize, however, the danger that lies in attempts to elevate animals to our moral equals in the face of glaring evidence they could never operate as such. These efforts ultimately reduce us all to an undifferentiated mess.

  • Postmodern Realities Episode 162 You Say You Want A Revolution
Just War Theory (JWT) has been criticized for being so flexible that it can be used to rationalize almost any motivation for initiating war and is therefore of little use in actually preventing war. Because it was originally developed as a means of evaluating the moral considerations of war between nation-states, the applicability of JWT becomes more complicated and difficult to assess when potential combatants reside within the same borders. In this special case, even what would seem to be a straightforward application of the principles used to evaluate state versus nonstate combatants is inadequate because Scripture has more to say about the unique moral imperatives involved in the case of revolution.

  • Postmodern Realities Episode 161 What Do You Mean by God? Pullman’s “Straw-Man God” in His Dark Materials
In apologetics, a crucial question to ask a critic of religion is, “What do you mean by God?” Author Philip Pullman gives an imaginative answer to that question in His Dark Materials, a fantasy trilogy for young adults turned television series now airing on HBO. The books originally generated backlash from Christians because of Pullman’s anti-religious bent and his negative characterization of God and the Church. However, a closer look at Pullman’s “god” reveals him to be merely a straw-man, a false god Christians would likely reject as well. Therefore, rather than rushing to defend against Pullman’s attacks on religion and the Church, a more fruitful approach might lie in challenging his assumptions about the nature of God. The imagination is powerful, evidenced by the profound influence Milton’s Paradise Lost had on Pullman and His Dark Materials. However, there are some distinct differences between the two stories, namely Pullman’s assumptions about the kind of world we live in. With Pullman’s choice to cast Dust (or consciousness) as the ultimate foundational reality, he creates a materialistic world in which God is simply another created being. His Dark Materials, with all its fantastical elements, really begins and ends with matter and leaves little room for the immaterial, eternal God of the Christian Bible. Unfortunately, this a priori commitment to an anti-supernatural worldview often results in a distorted understanding of God and Christianity.
