We briefly return from our hiatus with an episode recorded last summer, all about Harry Potter Fandom: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Zoe and Adela reminisce about their first introductions to the books and to the fandom, online and offline. E remembers their view of this monolith of a fanbase from the sidelines, when internet culture in the 00s and 10s was saturated with Harry Potter references, theories, memes, and revelations. Zoe discusses types of fandoms from a scholarly lens and why the Harry Potter fandom was so transformative. For better or worse, HP fans shaped early internet culture. For better or worse, HP fans brought their obsession with the magical world into the real world. Let's talk about that.

In which we watch and discuss the film adaptation of Goblet of Fire which, despite all of the negative shoutouts, we all quite enjoyed. Discussions include the much better handling of the Crouch/Moody mystery compared to the book, as well as the two genders: butterflies and staves. We would all also like to acknowledge that we completely forgot to talk about Draco at all, and we apologize.

Due to a technical issue we combined the last four chapters of HP 4! Hear E grumble about the second half of the climax, listen to Zoe get frustrated with Crouch’s Moody, and bask in Adela’s love for Fred and George. The book ends on the series’ first ever sad closing, but both we and Harry will preserve.
Send us your book 4 wrap up questions! Spoilers please send directly to Zoe or Adela or to our Tumblr, and feel free to send us questions about the book 4 movie as well!
Note: Adela had a couple audio issues throughout the episode, apologies!

In which we discuss the first half of the climax of Goblet of Fire, including the fridging of Cedric Diggory, an expository villain monologue that lasts five whole pages, and whether Voldy's cult is actually an MLM.

In which we discuss Chapters 27-28 of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, "Padfoot Returns" and "The Madness of Mr. Crouch". The C Plot thickens, plot holes abound, and the author, a self-proclaimed feminist, continues to have an entirely anti-feminist way of writing women.

CW: frank conversations about anti-semitism & transphobia.
Sports? Big communal bathtub? How a whole generation of activists inspired by these books now have to reconcile the foundation of their being with the betrayal of the author who gave them that?

A plot! Triwizard Tournament!
B plot! Harry and Ron are silly boys!
C plot! Mysteries abound!
D plot! JKR is still a TERF!
General content warning across the episode for discussions of grooming, TERFs/transphobia, and specifically stereotypical "transphobic transwoman stereotypes." We also have BIG big conversation about gender norms / what makes a woman valid/valuable and there is a lot of talk of binary gender norms
