  • Cancel Culture Is A Mainstream Media Con

I've felt this for ages but today's coverage of Adele's choice of costume to mark what would have been the Notting Hill Carnival has pushed me over the edge.

Of course there are instances where people's behaviour or opinions are so at odds with mainstream society and the law that they should be 'shut out' from public performance and debates. But to apply that same treatment to a pop star styling her hair a particular way or choosing to dress in particular clothes risks belittling very serious issues.

Issues around racism and sexism should not be treated as 'entertainment' stories and yet I believe they often are in our mainstream media. So I have a few thoughts to share and I'd like to know what you think. You can message me at [email protected]

  • Crisis Comms And Making Holding Statements Appear More Human

Comsteria is here to help your organisation communicate more effectively.

It's always disappointing when good organisations come across as cold and uncaring when they issue statements relating to historical allegations. I understand why it happens - your staff member is innocent until proven guilty and you've got HR and legal telling you to say as little as possible and let procedures and systems kick in.

This isn't what the public want to hear. And it's a huge missed opportunity to let people see the caring organisation you are, to demonstrate good leadership, and most importantly, to ensure people who've had a bad experience of your organisation hear your words and feel valued.

So how do you do it? A few thoughts from Colin in this podcast.

  • Did the leader of the Scottish Conservatives actually say he was planning 'unrelenting war' against the SNP?

Douglas Ross, the recently appointed leader of the Scottish Conservatives is the subject of articles on the Evening Express and Press and Journal websites today.

The headlines state: 'Douglas Ross - I'll halt pro-indy surge with unrelenting war on SNP' - but did he actually use that word 'war'?

And if we assume he didn't, what should you do to deal with newspapers that might put words in your mouth or make things sound more dramatic than they actually are?
