A teenage girl's life is full of emotions, friend-drama, guy-drama, self-image, and lots of conflicting and confusing culture messages.  These are the topics discussed in Pt. 2 of Girl's Self-Worth.(Additional help in the accompanying blog post, click here.)  The Practically Speaking MOM, Val Harrison, is joined by her oldest daughter and youth director in Christian ministry, Victoria Dahilig to discuss the important topic of a girl's complex teen years.  For more discussion like this one, also listen to episode 6 when Victoria visited the studio to talk about the middle & teen years - overcoming negative self-talk and what  your teens aren't telling you.

Part 1 of Parenting Middle School and High School girls.  If your kids are younger than this age, please listen also.  Intentional Mom, now is the time to determine where you stand on many complex issues and now is the time to begin impacting your daughter's perspective while also planting seeds of the right values.  Then too, if you are a mom with girls in this stage right now , you are needing some clarity of mind on all the complex issues you are currently facing.  My prayer is that this two-part series will provide that for you.

In this first part, we're looking at the complex messages that the culture is telling your daughter.  We look at the UNIQUE ROLES of moms and dads and how each shape their daughter's perspective about herself.  Your daughter is watching you (even in the teenage years).  Mom, she's seeing how you treat yourself - both in words and actions.  And, Dad, she's watching you too -to see how you treat her, her mom, and all the women around you.  Are you living out the same values and perspectives that you want your daughter to have about herself? What's your daughter's view of MODESTY, SELF-PERCEPTION, her SELF-WORTH? How are you shaping her definition of  BEAUTY according to God’s perspective instead of culture’s perspective. NOW is when you shape their perspective about RELATIONSHIPS, helping them see that their value is NOT DEPENDENT on having the approval or acceptance of any boy or their ability to get a boyfriend.  We'll go into more about  relationships and other topics in Part 2.

Can Crisis Parenting and families celebrating Holy Week fit together? 
Well, it does this week! These two issues come together on the Practically Speaking MOM: Intentional Mom, Strong Family Podcast. The beauty of a CHECKLIST – the kids follow it instead of mom needing to repeatedly ask them to do things or for mom to try to think of what she wishes the kids would do to be productive before they get on their screens.

Oh, Mom, how is your family holding up? Are you feeling confused, overwhelmed, and stunned? Since our current world crisis doesn't seem near its end, we parents are looking at how to bring normalcy to this new and unusual reclusive life. I thought I would begin a series to help us find our new normal, however temporary it might be, called Parenting in the Pandemic.This first episode of Parenting in the Pandemic, focuses on getting your family's focus clear.
Your child's perspective is going to come from whatever their eyes have been seeing and their ears have been hearing.  So, what are they seeing and hearing during this time?  Parents, don't waste this pressure gift of TIME and AUDIENCE that we've been given with our children.  What a priceless gift! To help them gain perspective, focus on achieving two main things:
1. Let your kids see TRUST in God and HOPE for the future.
2. Inspire them to DEMONSTRATE LOVE in tangible ways.
Don't view this time as something to survive or to just GET THROUGH.  No, this is a time to THRIVE ON WHAT MATTERS MOST.  Parents, please don't waste this opportunity.
Q&A Root Parenting: Discovering the deeper roots of our child’s behavior requires getting them to open up. Val shares some different ways to help our children share the reserved thoughts of their hearts with us.  
 Val also explains about nourishing our child's roots and protecting them from the "weather” until their roots are deep and healthy in the early years.  Then the next phase is teaching them how to nourish and filter for themselves as they get older.  It’s a process that we don’t want to rush or neglect, but give our child what they need in each stage.

So much parenting wisdom is tucked into this week's episode. First, Val Harrison, The Practically Speaking MOM, reminds moms that INFLUENCE in our child's heart is a PRIVILEGE and thus we must delicately guard it from relationship killers.  Then Val looks at the first half of the key elements of learning to live a lifestyle of Feasting with the Father - by helping moms to not get "the cart before the horse."  We moms have a tendency to push our kids to a relationship with God when our own relationship with Him is suffering.  We must love Him first and then draw the hearts of our children to Him.

*Influence is a privilege.  We want to continually have a mindset of maintaining the right to influence our child’s heart if we want to continue to have that privilege in their lives on a long-term basis.  Don’t waste this privilege.  Don’t squander it. Be careful to not allow walls to build up in relationship between parent and child. There are many ways we can lose influence because we allowed relationship killers to infiltrate.Watch out for these relationship killers! They come in as disrespectful attitudes.  They sneak in through selfish actions.   Parents are often as guilty as children in having disrespectful attitudes and selfish actions.  Beware of these sabotages to our family relationships!

*Mom, are you out of order? What do kids need most from their mom?  They need a mom who is  Living a Lifestyle Feasting with the Father in the midst of our worries, fears, celebrations, prayers, decisions...In Matt 22:37, Jesus sums up the law of God's heart, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.  Then secondly, love your neighbor as yourself."  As moms we have a tendency to get those two out of order by thinking that loving on our kids and pushing them to God’s banquet table is more important than us personally loving Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.  There's so much going on below the surface in your child, and all of these things impact your child's attitude and behavior. It's our tendency to respond to the surface behavior  without giving attention to the hidden mysteries of your child's heart, where in lie, the reasons why they're doing what they're doing. So it becomes our goal to figure out what's going on below the surface that's bubbling up and out in less than healthy ways. That's what we're talking about today - the four main roots of our child's heart and how their perceptions and beliefs in those four areas affect their attitudes and behavior."
The four main roots of our child's heart:
Knowledge Root (what they've learned, what they've experienced, their perceptions of what they've experienced & learned)
Spiritual Root (their perceptions of who God is, who God made them to be, and the condition of their soul - are they feeling guilt, are they harboring sin, do they believe they are continually disappointing God)
Relational Root (their perceptions about the interactions they have, the social labels they give themselves, their perceptions of the labels that others have given them, the health of their relationships)
Physical Root (there are so many ways that your child's physical condition affects their attitude and behavior.  Are you teaching them to monitor these conditions and to become self-sufficient and self-controlled?)
It's important not to UNDER-REACT or OVER-REACT when we're dealing with misbehavior, as our RESPONSE teaches the child the VALUE of that behavior. Under-reacting, can send the message that the behavior was "no big deal," while OVER-REACTING is a distraction that keeps the child from the lesson.  They're so distracted by the OVER-REACTION, that they can miss the lesson all together!

The only way you can discern the deeply complex tunnels buried below the surface of your child’s behaviors is for you to be connected to the Creator of our souls, our all-knowing, all-loving Heavenly Father. Plant your roots deeply in His Word and regularly be nourished by Him. Only if you are committed to healthy roots in your own soul will you be able to identify the mysteries of your children’s deep and complex root system."
