Answer: In Western countries, one could simply call the police to resolve such noise disturbances. However, in some countries, this issue is not as easily addressed. Many violent incidents have occurred between neighbors due to noise disputes. While noise pollution can have serious negative impacts, some laws don't fully recognize its severity and often treat it as a minor offense. This has led to persistent noise problems that disrupt people's studies, work, rest, and especially the spiritual practices of lay practitioners.

We should petition the National Assembly to enact laws against noise pollution thoroughly, creating a quieter, more civilized society where people's right to a peaceful environment is respected.

When confronted with noise disturbances, it's best to contact the local authorities rather than confronting the noisy neighbors directly to avoid conflicts. Additionally, we can display a sign in front of our homes that reads, "LET'S WORK TOGETHER TO MAINTAIN A PEACEFUL NEIGHBORHOOD FOR EVERYONE'S HEALTH."

Question 50: WHAT IS THE APPROPRIATE SPIRITUAL PERSPECTIVE ON KEEPING PETS LIKE DOGS AND CATS?

Answer: Many spiritual traditions believe that pets, particularly dogs and cats, are reincarnations of our deceased loved ones who have been reborn in lower realms. Some people report dreams in which their pet dogs were revealed to be their fathers from a previous life, who had led promiscuous, selfish, or narrow-minded lives. This notion aligns with the concept of the Law of Karma. In temple settings, pets are often thought to be reborn monks or nuns who deviated from their spiritual path due to wrong views, broken vows, or a lack of compassion.

With compassion, we should treat our pets with kindness, remembering they might be our loved ones in another form. But let's avoid overindulging them. Too much pampering could hinder their spiritual growth and make it difficult for them to move beyond the animal realm. We should strive to help them accumulate positive karma, though it's challenging to explain concepts like merit and sin to animals. Most pets simply follow their owners' lead.

Some highly trained military dogs, known for their intelligence and intuition, are believed to have the potential for human rebirth in their next life due to their meritorious service.

Question 49: IN THE SECULAR WORLD, IT'S COMMON FOR ACQUAINTANCES TO BORROW MONEY FROM EACH OTHER, OFTEN LEADING TO UNPLEASANT SITUATIONS. CAN A LAY PRACTITIONER GET CAUGHT UP IN THESE ISSUES AND FIND IT HARSH TO PRACTICE THEIR FAITH?

Answer: Whether a monk or a lay practitioner, a practitioner should always remember that avoiding debt is a moral principle. While life may present challenges that require borrowing, understanding the Law of Karma, one should endure these hardships rather than incurring debts that create heavy burdens on both the mind and life. Being free from debt is a form of liberation. Considering the countless karmic debts we've accumulated in past lives, taking on new debts is a hindrance to spiritual progress.

When someone asks to borrow money, there are generally four possibilities:

- Temporary financial trouble: The person is not truly impoverished but is facing a temporary shortage of funds due to a specific need.

- Genuine hardship: The person is experiencing genuine financial hardship and has exhausted all other options.

- Compulsive borrower: The person has a habit of borrowing money and prefers borrowing to working.

- Fraudster: The person is pretending to be in need of money, promising to repay the loan but with no intention of doing so.

When someone asks to borrow money, we must be discerning enough to identify which category they fall into so we can respond appropriately. If it's the second case, someone who has exhausted their good fortune, even if we lend them money, there's little chance they will be able to repay it. In such cases, we can offer a small amount of assistance and then let it go.

Question 48: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO DREAM ABOUT A DECEASED LOVED ONE?

Answer: There are four types of dreams:

- Dreams that replay our waking thoughts.

- Dreams that are memories from a past life.

- Dreams that are premonitions of future events.

- Dreams that involve interactions with spirits from the afterlife.

Therefore, when we dream about a deceased loved one, it could be because we thought about them during the day, or it could be because they visited us in our dream. If it's a dream involving interaction with a spirit, it's vital to comprehend what they are trying to convey.

Question 47: CERTAIN ROADS HAVE A HISTORY OF RECURRING ACCIDENTS. PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT THE SPIRITS OF THOSE WHO DIED IN ACCIDENTS ON THESE ROADS ARE CAPTURING NEW VICTIMS TO KEEP THEM COMPANY. HOW SHOULD WE UNDERSTAND THIS BELIEF?

Answer: There's a widespread belief that spirits of accident victims linger on roads with frequent crashes. These spirits are thought to cause new accidents to gaincompanions, as offerings left at accident sites supposedly provide sustenance for the existing spirits. Notably, these spirits are believed to be extremely hungry and thirsty, with some even said to crave blood, painting a grim picture of the afterlife.

Another belief suggests that after death, spirits are often bound to their place of death, unable to roam freely like those who have earned sufficient merit. Spirits with merit are believed to be escorted by celestial beings or welcomed by loved ones, free to go wherever they please. However, those with little merit are thought to be trapped near their place of death, unable to move on or reincarnate, possibly for centuries.

It's believed that virtuous monks should be invited to perform rituals, offering food and chanting sutras to liberate the spirits in order to address persistent accidents on a particular road. These spirits can then be escorted to a temple's spirit house, where they are effectively confined by the virtue of the monks and protective deities. This is said to immediately reduce the frequency of accidents on the road.

It's also common to believe that spirits of accident victims linger along roadsides, hungry and thirsty. Offering food and reciting the Buddha's name for their better rebirth is considered a compassionate act that can alleviate their suffering.

Answer: Many folk tales recount lost items being found after praying to the Earth God. This has led to a widespread belief in Earth Gods, affectionately known as "Ông Địa," and their integration into Vietnamese culture. In recent years, the worship of Wealth Gods, often placed alongside Earth Gods, has become increasingly common. Both deities are typically positioned on the ground. While this placement seems fitting for the Earth God, it may appear less sensible for the Wealth God.

People worship the Earth God believing He protects their homes, and they worship the Wealth God hoping for prosperity.

While these folk beliefs are charming, it's unavoidable to grasp them more deeply from the following Buddhist perspectives:

- The true nature of deities: In the invisible realm, there are indeed deities who govern vast territories, much like provincial governors. They have assistants and are appointed by the heavenly realm. Sometimes, virtuous officials who have passed away are deified by the king to become tutelary deities, overseeing their former territories and providing subtle assistance to the living. The king may not see the spirit world, but his royal decrees still hold sway there. And His virtue is truly remarkable. Understanding Earth Gods in this way suggests it would be more respectful to place their statues on a higher shelf rather than directly on the ground.

- The role of spirits: The invisible realm is complex, and its inhabitants are occupied with their own affairs. The small miracles that occur in our homes are usually handled by the spirits residing there, rather than by the Earth God.

- The role of the Wealth God: If a Wealth God exists, His role is likely to encourage us to be charitable and generous, thereby accumulating merit which, in turn, brings chances of wealth.

- The significance of household shrines: Many rural households have a simple altar in their front yard consisting of a pole, a board, incense, and fruit offerings. This is a way to show respect to the deities of heaven. How gracefully! With a deeper understanding, these household shrines can become noticeably worthwhile.

Question 45: HAVING GONE THROUGH COUNTLESS REINCARNATIONS, EVERYONE MUST HAVE EXPERIENCED MANY MARRIAGES WITH DIFFERENT PARTNERS. IF ONE WAS AN ANIMAL IN A PREVIOUS LIFE, THEIR SEXUAL RELATIONSHIPS WOULD HAVE BEEN EVEN MORE CASUAL. IN THIS CURRENT LIFE, IT'S VERY DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN A LIFELONG COMMITMENT DUE TO THE INFLUENCE OF PAST KARMA. WHAT SHOULD BE THE RIGHT VIEW ON THIS?

Answer: There are several reasons why romantic relationships are so complex and intertwined:

- Past lives: Having gone through countless reincarnations, the objects of our affections constantly change. Past karmic connections can be difficult to break, unless the other person was extremely evil or harmful.

- Animalistic past: If one was an animal in a previous life, where sexual relationships are casual, it can be difficult to maintain monogamy in the present life.

- Historical context: In the past, polygamy was common among the wealthy and powerful. Even today, some religions, like Islam, allow men to have up to four wives.

These past connections make it difficult to maintain lifelong monogamy, especially when modern laws punish infidelity.

The power of karma is not easily overcome by willpower alone. It requires the grace of the Three Noble Jewels. Lay practitioners should worship and pray daily, asking to be released from past karmic attachments. Even if they encounter someone from a past life, they should only help each other on the spiritual path and avoid reviving old romantic feelings. This applies even to one's current spouse. By praying daily, one can regain composure when unexpectedly encountering ‘someone from a past life.’

Even monks who have vowed to remain celibate for life can be tempted by past karmic attachments because they too have lived as lay practitioners in previous lives. It takes great merit to become a monk, but one must not be complacent. Daily prayers are decisive to conquer the remnants of past romantic attachments and to ensure a smooth spiritual journey. This practice must continue for many lifetimes to attain enlightenment eventually.

Answer: Our main approach should be to uphold the principle of national unity. We should always demonstrate friendliness and promote harmony. Remember, every religion is part of our nation. We should love our country and, driven by patriotism, care for our fellow citizens regardless of their religious beliefs.

We should consistently seek common ground between our religion and others to foster goodwill. It's best to avoid unnecessary discussions about differences or engaging in fierce arguments to prove a point, as these can ultimately end up being shattered (literally being broken into pieces).

A key difference is that most other religions worship a God believed to have created everything, including human destiny. Buddhism, however, believes in the Law of Karma and rebirth, and venerates the Enlightened One. Enlightenment is considered the ultimate goal. Constantly arguing about these fundamental differences will inevitably lead to religious conflict. Instead, we can suggest that the concept of enlightenment teaches us to let go of the ego, and that the less ego we have, the closer we are to God.

In Buddhism, there's also the concept of deities overseeing various heavens and realms, which differs slightly from the idea of a creator God. However, we can flexibly connect these concepts, acknowledging that the greatness of the Divine is difficult to fully comprehend.

The Law of Karma can be seen as complementing God's justice, as surely God blesses the good and punishes the wicked.

Moreover, concepts like repentance, prayer, worship, doing good deeds, and observing precepts are quite similar across religions.

If someone insists, "I don't need enlightenment; I just want to go to God’s heaven after I die," we can gently reply, "Letting go of the ego is a sign of returning to God because those who are egoless and humble can more easily approach God. Those who are arrogant and boastful about their ego can't." Such a response can open up a new perspective, showing that different religions can complement rather than contradict each other.

Answer: A pilgrimage is a journey to a sacred place associated with one's religion. Unlike traveling for leisure or cultural experiences, people of faith undertake pilgrimages to visit sites of significant historical spiritual value. They visit these places to relive the history of the saint who made the land sacred, deepen their faith by being physically present in a spiritually charged environment, experience a sense of the saint's ongoing presence, believing that the saint listens to their prayers, understands their devotion, and bestows merit upon them. Followers of a particular religious sect often visit the birthplace of their tradition, where their founder first began to preach. In Buddhism, there are Four Holy Sites: the places where the Buddha was born, attained enlightenment, delivered His first sermon, and entered Nirvana. Buddhism also has many sacred sites in other countries associated with the Buddha's life or with Saintly Monks.

Every religion has its own sacred sites, and every country has its own holy places. The way tour guides narrate the stories of these places can greatly enhance their perceived sacredness.

A sacred site is typically associated with the life of a saint or a miraculous event involving a saint. It must be preserved in a pure state for a long time to allow pilgrims to experience its sacredness.

Over time, the meaning of pilgrimage has evolved. People now organize trips to visit multiple temples (ten temples), especially those in remote areas, where they make offerings, inquire about the temple's well-being, and pay their respects. This is also considered a pilgrimage and provides additional financial support to these remote temples.

Answer: Music is a fascinating phenomenon. While it may appear superfluous, its absence often leaves a noticeable void. Buddhist scriptures mention that celestial beings in heaven use music as offerings to the Buddha. Some of these beings, known as Gandharvas, are particularly skilled in music. The Mahayana Shurangama Sutra even lists music as one of the five abilities a Bodhisattva must master to teach others (among the Five Abilities, Sound Ability is regarding music).

Although monastic precepts in Buddhism prohibit singing, Buddhist music hasn't developed as extensively as in other religions. Catholicism, for example, heavily relies on music for evangelism, with many innovative doctrines woven into hymn lyrics, captivating believers.

As monks have interacted with other religions, they've become more open-minded and have begun to accept hymns composed by lay practitioners. Korean Buddhist monks now use music to introduce Buddhism to the public. It's possible that ancient Indian music was primarily lyrical, making it unsuitable for monks to sing. However, nowadays, it's quite common and even enjoyable to hear a monk singing a religious song.

Exploring the world of music further, we discover that it represents the pinnacle of both art and mathematics. Musicians, singers, and composers must understand music as deeply as mathematics and appreciate it as a sublime art form. Learning music properly is as hard as mastering mathematics.

Melodious tunes can captivate our minds, leaving lasting impressions. However, lyrics filled with Dharma can deepen our understanding of the teachings. Lay practitioners should also acquire some knowledge of music to avoid a DEFICIENCY in their spiritual practice. In this case, it's better to have too much knowledge than too little
