It's unfortunate when someone lacks the karmic affinity to become a monastic, and there can be various reasons for not wanting to start a family. Interestingly, some people, despite being attractive, struggle to find a partner. Most individuals who choose not to marry worry about loneliness and lack of care in their old age. In fact, in Japan today, many elderly people, even those with children, find themselves without care and may even pass away unnoticed.
In the past, families were larger, and even if children moved to cities for work, there were still relatives in rural areas. Land and property had fewer legal restrictions, making it easier for people to stay and make a living. Nowadays, many have abandoned their land because they can't survive on small-scale farming, forcing them to move to cities for work and leaving elderly parents behind.
Whether one's old age is comfortable or difficult doesn't depend on having children, but rather on accumulated merit. Those with good fortune will have people to care for them, even without children, while those with bad fortune may struggle even with children. Understanding this, even if we choose not to marry, we should diligently cultivate merit, as if we were raising several children. Only with such effort can we accumulate enough merit to be well-cared for in old age.
Raising children is demanding, with no guarantee of filial behavior. Some children may even cause problems, such as borrowing against the family home and disappearing. Those who understand the Dharma don't raise children expecting care in old age, but hope their children will become good people who contribute to society. They view parenting as a selfless act of giving a good person to the world. Their duty is to cultivate their children to become selfless servants of society. This is the noble duty of parenthood, not simply having children for personal care. By focusing on spiritual practice and cultivating merit, one can enjoy a peaceful old age.
