Question 18: DOES ADVISING THOSE AROUND US TO PRACTICE AND DO GOOD VIOLATE THE PRINCIPLE OF DISCREET PRACTICE?
Answer: This is a delicate matter. One must find a way to maintain the secretiveness of their practice while also finding ways to advise those around them to practice and do good. Before advising others, one must perform many virtuous acts, charitable deeds, contributions, selfless acts, etc., to reveal their practice to others indirectly.
Practicing discreetly is necessary to avoid boasting and arrogance, but the demands of a selfless life compel positive interactions with others. Lay practitioners must skillfully handle this contradiction. For example, helping someone without being obvious is ideal, such as filling potholes in a remote area at night, picking up litter outside one's locality, asking someone to deliver a gift to a poor person in the neighborhood, etc.
Even acts of charity should be done discreetly. Once merit is accumulated, one can help people learn about the Dharma through reputable websites, by giving them Dharma books, by communicating via email, etc. Face-to-face meetings are best avoided. If necessary, one should not reveal their practice or preach the Dharma directly. Consider becoming a Dharma teacher on a platform in the future when sufficient merit is accumulated. For now, it's best to remain hidden for more stable practice.

Question 17: IS IT CORRECT THAT HAVING LITTLE MERIT MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO ADVISE OTHERS TO PRACTICE AND DO GOOD?
Answer: That's correct. The mouths of the wealthy are unyielding and forceful. Those with abundant merit find it easier to advise others to practice and do good, while those with little merit struggle to convince others. However, if we don't help those around us
to practice and do good, our own practice may be hindered in the future, facing obstacles and adversities. We need everyone around us to understand and practice doing good so that future generations can grow up in a virtuous environment, and we can practice peacefully in our own homes.
Regardless, we must first accumulate substantial merit. Our lives need to upgrade, and we must be able to donate and help those around us in practical ways. When people see our clear merit, they'll be more inclined to listen to our advice on practice and doing good. For now, with little merit, we must be cautious when sharing the Dharma with others to avoid criticism and blame. When merit is scarce, we can only speak to those with noticeably good karmic connections from past lives.

Question 16: HOW CAN ONE PRACTICE IF THEY HAVE LITTLE MERIT AND FIND IT DIFFICULT TO DONATE OR MAKE OFFERINGS TO ACCUMULATE MORE?

Answer: Merit is the foundation of all success. Without it, nothing can be accomplished. However, accumulating merit initially requires some merit. This means that to donate, one needs money; to volunteer, good health; to teach, wisdom; and to protect others, authority. Lacking merit now makes it challenging to accumulate more, potentially leaving one stuck and unable to progress in practice.

To break this cycle, one should pay homage to the Buddha and seek merit for opportunities to accumulate more. Then, look for ways to accumulate merit within one's capabilities. The first few attempts under difficult circumstances are challenging, requiring effort, hardship, and endurance. With persistence, finding opportunities becomes easier. Even when poor, sharing what little one has; even when suffering, helping others—be it a small amount of money, food, or effort—are all attempts to accumulate merit under difficult circumstances, breaking the cycle of lack. Never say, "I'll accumulate merit when I'm rich." One must strive to accumulate merit while still poor to overcome poverty.

Once some merit is accumulated, don't squander it on enjoyment. Instead, use it to continue accumulating more. Be willing to endure hardship and lack to dedicate resources to accumulating merit indefinitely.

Answer: A monastic life is characterized by the following:

-       Freedom from birth family responsibilities, allowing for lighter-hearted practice.

-       Living in an environment where everyone is practicing, facilitating diligence.

-       Subsisting on donations, eliminating worries about livelihood and allowing focus on study and practice.

-       Receiving donations from lay practitioners with strict requirements regarding precepts, virtue, wisdom, and teaching merit, which is both weighty and noble.

-       While detached from worldly affairs, they maintain responsibilities to sentient beings, requiring careful, subtle, and skillful handling of all matters.

-       Maintaining compassionate minds that love all beings equally, while acknowledging deep karmic relationships from the past, necessitating careful, subtle, and skillful consideration in all actions.

Understanding these characteristics, we must sow appropriate causes to reap the fruit of monastic life in the future. This includes: Respecting genuine monastic practitioners, Supporting monastics with donations, Helping others (especially family members) extensively to repay relational debts, Maintaining precepts, Practicing diligently like a monastic, Paying homage to the Buddha frequently, Vowing to practice and teach sentient beings so that all may attain enlightenment and liberation, etc.

Answer:
The Law of Karma is a universal truth, and like any science, it requires a premise to be accepted (belief). The Law of Karma needs a foundational premise to be accepted before we can gradually infer more from it.
For example, in mathematics, we have Euclid's axioms which we accept without proof, but from these axioms, we derive countless theorems to form our magnificent mathematical system. Theorems need to be proven, while axioms are simply accepted.
The Law of Karmic retribution follows a similar pattern. There's a premise that must be accepted, from which we can derive many rules of inference. The "premise" of karmic retribution is:
Whoever sows good or evil seeds will reap corresponding happiness or suffering in the future.
From this premise, we can infer every aspect of the Law of Karma, with enough data to fill ten libraries.
BELIEF: Accepting the foundational premise.
UNDERSTANDING: The process of further inference and logical derivation.
That's why when discussing the Law of Karma, we often use the words Belief and Understandingtogether.

Answer: This mindset is common. Most people are preoccupied with providing for their families, leaving little time to consider doing good for others. Consequently, they struggle to accumulate future merit. Merit is crucial for all aspects of life, from economic well-being and career opportunities to spiritual practice. Without merit, one lacks everything. However, people are often busy harvesting fruits to eat, while few know how to plant new trees while harvesting.

Buddhist disciples, having a deep understanding of the Law of Karma, constantly seek to accumulate merit for the future. While managing their livelihoods, they also look for opportunities to do good deeds. These opportunities often arise spontaneously and unexpectedly. One must recognize these chances and assess their own capabilities. It's important to do good deeds without causing conflict within one's family. We can gauge a person's spiritual depth by their desire to do good deeds. Those who yearn to do good have a great spiritual mind.
