The basic theme of Ezra is the restoration of the Temple. It shows the spiritual, moral, and social restoration of the returned remnant in Jerusalem, under the leadership of Zerubbabel and Ezra. Israel's worship is revitalized and the people are purified. God's faithfulness is seen in the way He sovereignly protects His faithfulness through a powerful empire, while they are in captivity. They prosper in their cause and their captor/king encourages them to rebuild their homeland. God also provides zealous and capable spiritual leaders, who direct the return and the rebuilding. He keeps His promise: "...I will be found of you, saith the Lord: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the Lord; and I will bring you again into the place whence I cause you to be carried away captive" (Je.29:14). 2. The key verses of Ezra are 1:3 and 7:10. 3. The key chapter is Ezra six (6). Ezra chapter six (6) records the completion and dedication of the Temple, which stimulates the obedience of the remnant to keep the Passover and separate themselves from, the "...fifth of the nation of the land" (Ezr.6:21).
