The promised time of prosperity has not yet come, and the prevailing attitude that it is not worth serving God however, God reveals His continuing love in spite of Israel's lethargy. His appeal in this oracle is for the people and priests to stop and realize that their lack of blessing is not caused by God's lack of concern, but by their disobedience of the covenant law. When they repent and return to God with sincere hearts, the obstacles to the flow of divine blessing will be removed. Malachi also reminds the people that a day of reckoning will surely come when God will judge the righteous and the wicked. MODULE: MINOR PROPHETS Lesson 11 - Book of Zephaniah Lesson 12 - Book of Haggai The Christ of Zephaniah Jesus alluded to Zephaniah's writings on two occasions (Zep.1:3; Mt.13:41 and Zep.1:15; Mt.24:29). Both of these passages about the Day of the Lord are associated with Christ's Second Advent. Although the Messiah is not specifically mentioned in Zephaniah, it is clear that He is the One who will fulfill the great promises of 3:9-20. He will gather His people and reign in victory: "The Lord has taken away your judgments; He has cast out your enemy. Key words: The day of the Lord The Christ of Haggai The promise of Haggai 2:9 points ahead to the crucial role the second temple is to have in God's redemptive plan. Herod the Great later spend a fortune on the project of enlarging and enriching this temple, and it was filled with the glory of God incarnate every time Christ came to Jerusalem. The Messiah is also portrayed in the person of Zerubbabel: "I will take you, Zerubabbel...and I will make you as a signet ring; for I have chosen you" (2:23). Zerubabbel becomes the center of the Messianic line and is like a signet ring, sealing both branches together. MODULE: HABAKKUK ONE OF THE TWELVE MINOR PROPHETS The Christ of Habakkuk The word salvation appears three times in 3:13, 18 and is the root word from which the name Jesus is derived (Mt.1:21). When He comes again, "the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea" (2:14). Keys to Habakkuk 1. Key words: "The just shall live by His faith" The circumstances of life sometimes appear to contradict God's revelation concerning His power and purposes. Habakkuk struggles in his faith when he sees men flagrantly violate God's law and distort justice on every level, without fear of divine intervention. He wants to know why God allows this growing iniquity to go unpunished. When God reveals His intention to use Babylon as His rod of judgment, Habakkuk is even more troubled because that nation is more corrupt than Judah. God's answer satisfies Habakkuk that he can trust Him even in the worst of circumstances because of His matchless wisdom, goodness, and power. God's plan is perfect, and nothing is big enough to stand in the way of its ultimate fulfillment. In spite of appearances to the contrary, God is still on the throne as the Lord of history and the Ruler of the nations. God may be slow to wrath, but all iniquity will be punished eventually. He is the only worthy object of faith, and the righteous man will trust in Him at all times. 2.
