  • Morning Prayer - WEDNESDAY, 19 Oct 2022

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - October 19, 2022 | Wednesday of the Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

"You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come." - Luke 12:40

Are you prepared to meet the Lord?

Jesus comes to us at an unexpected hour. He will return one day as judge of the living and the dead. But He also comes to us, continually, by grace.

The Lord's coming requires us to be continually "prepared" to meet Him. We do this first by fostering a daily habit of interior prayer, which means that no matter what we do at every moment of the day, our minds and hearts are always turned toward God. Being prepared this way will allow you to meet Christ at every moment that He comes to you by grace. (Catholic Daily Reflections)

  • Morning Prayer - TUESDAY, 18 Oct 2022

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - October 18, 2022 | Feast of St. Luke, Evangelist

"How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings glad tidings of peace, bearing good news, announcing salvation!" - Isaiah 52:7

St. Luke, the inspired author of the third Gospel and of the Acts of the Apostles, was a native of Antioch in Syria and a physician, and one of the early converts from paganism. He accompanied St. Paul on a considerable part of his missionary journey. He was also his companion while in prison at Rome on two different occasions. His account of these events, contained in the Acts, is firsthand history.

Luke's Gospel is, above all, the Gospel of the Merciful Heart of Jesus. It emphasizes the fact that Christ is the salvation of all men, especially of the repentant sinner and of the lowly. Legend says that Luke painted the Blessed Virgin's portrait. It is certainly true that he painted the most beautiful word-picture of Mary ever written.

  • Morning Prayer - MONDAY, 17 Oct 2022

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - October 17, 2022 | St. Ignatius of Antioch, Bishop and Martyr

"I am crucified with Christ, yet I live; no longer I, but Christ lives in me. I live by faith in the Son of God, who has loved me and given himself up for me." - Gal 2:19-20

St. Ignatius of Antioch (50-107) is one of the great bishops of the early Church. He was the successor of St. Peter as Bishop of Antioch. He was condemned to death by wild beasts during the Emperor Trajan's persecution. On his way to Rome, he wrote seven magnificent letters, which we still have today, concerning the Person of Christ, his love for Christ, his desire for martyrdom and on the constitution of the Church and Christian life. His sentiments before his approaching martyrdom are summed in his word in the Communion antiphon, "I am the wheat of Christ, ground by the teeth of beasts to become pure bread."

    LISTEN | Morning Prayer - October 16, 2022 | Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

"Pray always without becoming weary." - Luke 18:1

How persistent are you in your prayer?

The prayer you must seek to live is primarily a prayer of total trust and abandonment to God. You do not change God’s mind by begging Him. Rather, your prayer must be so persistent that it opens you to the will of God and allows His grace to flow in accord with His perfect will. (Catholic Daily Reflections)

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - October 15, 2022 | Memorial of St. Teresa of Avila, Virgin and Doctor of the Church

"Remain in my love, says the Lord; whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit." - Jn 15:9b, 5b

St. Teresa of Jesus (1515-1582) was born in Avila and died in Alba, Spain. When only a child of seven, she ran away from home in the hope of being martyred by the Moors; in this way, she said she could come to see God. At the age of eighteen she joined the Carmelite Order and chose Christ as her heavenly Spouse. With the help of St. John of the Cross she reformed most of the Carmelite convents and founded new ones. She reached the highest degree of prayer and through prayer obtained such knowledge of divine things that in 1970 Pope St. Paul VI named her the first woman Doctor of the Church.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - October 14, 2022 | Friday of the 28th Week in Ordinary Time / Optional Memorial of St. Callistus, Pope and Martyr

"May your kindness, O Lord, be upon us; who have put our hope in you." - Ps 33:22

Today is the Optional Memorial of St. Callistus, Pope and Martyr. Callistus was a Christian slave of Rome, and later was ordained deacon by Pope St. Zephyrinus, whom he succeeded as pope in the year 217. As deacon he was guardian of the Christian cemetery on the Appian Way which is still known by his name. While he vigorously opposed heresy, his charitable attitude toward repentant sinners incurred the wrath of contemporary rigorists. He was martyred in the persecutions of Alexander Severus in the year 223.

"I am the way and the truth and the life, says the Lord; no one comes to the Father except through me." - John 14:6

Today in Fatima in 1917, the marvelous Miracle of the Sun took place in the sky before 70,000 witnesses.

On the 13th day of each month from May through October 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, appeared to three young peasant children: Francisco, Jacinta, and Lucia; ages 10, 9 and 7. As was the custom, these youngsters were tending their family’s sheep when “a Lady all in white, more brilliant than the sun… indescribably beautiful,” standing above a bush, appeared to the youngsters.

Today, let us heed Mary's call to prayer and sacrifice for the conversion of sinners, the forgiveness of sins and the salvation of souls.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - October 12, 2022 | Wednesday of the 28th Week in Ordinary Time

"Those who follow you, Lord, will have the light of life." - John 8:12

From one generation to the next, God's love never ceases. He manifests His love to us in concrete ways, most of which would go unnoticed to those who do not pay attention to His presence within and around us. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to open our hearts to receive the love of God like springs of living water in us. Only when we are connected with our Creator that we will truly live and flourish like a tree planted near running streams.

"The word of God is living and effective, able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart." - Heb 4:12

Today is the Optional Memorial of St. John XXIII, pope from 1958-1963, best known for convening the Second Vatican Council. He was born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli in the village of Sotto il Monte, near Bergamo, in 1881. At the age of 11 he entered the seminary at Bergamo and later pursued his studies at the Pontifical Seminary in Rome. He was ordained priest in 1904. He was secretary to the Bishop of Bergamo but from 1921 onwards he served the Holy See directly in various posts, both in Rome and in Bulgaria, Turkey and Greece, culminating as Apostolic Nuncio to France from 1944 until 1953, when he was created cardinal and made the Patriarch of Venice. He was elected Pope in 1958. He convoked the Roman Synod, instituted the revision of Canon Law, and called the Second Vatican Council, which opened on 11 October 1962. He died while the Council was still in session, on the evening of 3 June 1963. Pope John XXIII was beatified by Pope St. John Paul II on September 3, 2000. His feast is assigned to the day on which the first session of Vatican II opened in 1962. On May 29, 2014, Pope Francis ordered the inscription of Saint John XXIII, Pope, into the General Roman Calendar.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - October 10, 2022 | Monday of the Twenty-Eighth Week in Ordinary Time

"There is something greater than Jonah here." - Lk 11:32

Do you ever wish that God would give you a sign from Heaven as a way of giving you some definitive guidance or direction in life? Do you look for signs from God and rely upon them?

Reflect, today, upon the greatest “sign” God has ever given. And if you find yourself struggling with questions in life, turn your eyes to this one definitive sign, which is the central mystery of our faith: the life, death and Resurrection of Christ. It is there that every question can be answered and every grace is given. We need nothing more than this. (Catholic Daily Reflections)
