  • Morning Prayer - MONDAY, 29 Aug 2022

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - August 29, 2022 | Memorial of the Passion of Saint John the Baptist

"John answered and said: He must increase; but I must decrease." - Jn 3:27, 30

Saint John the Baptist has two feasts to himself. One, in August, celebrates his death, and one, in June, celebrates his birth. And this is as it should be, for as Christ himself said, John was the greatest of the sons of men.

A prophet from before his birth, leaping in the womb to announce the coming of the incarnate God, his task was to proclaim the fulfilment of all prophecies – and thus his own obsolescence. And he did it: with unequalled courage he spread the news that he, the greatest of all men, was the least in the kingdom of heaven. His disciples, and the devil, would have preferred him to fight, to build his sect, to defeat this upstart whom he himself had baptized, to seize his place in history. But he did not – and so, rightly, he has his place, and he has glory in heaven.

We envy the great and the talented, and sometimes we think that they themselves are beyond envy. But when they come across someone with greater gifts, as one day most of them will, they will see for the first time what it means to feel like us. Let us pray that they, like John the Baptist, may pass that test. (Universalis)

  • Morning Prayer - SUNDAY, 28 Aug 2022

    LISTEN | Morning Prayer - August 28, 2022 | Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

"Take my yoke upon you, says the Lord, and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart." - Mt 11:29ab

The Memorial of St. Augustine, which is ordinarily celebrated today, is superseded by the Sunday liturgy.

Augustine was born in Thagaste in Africa of a Berber family. He was brought up a Christian but left the Church early and spent a great deal of time seriously seeking the truth, first in the Manichaean heresy, which he abandoned on seeing how nonsensical it was, and then in Neoplatonism, until at length, through the prayers of his mother and the teaching of St Ambrose of Milan, he was converted back to Christianity and baptized in 387, shortly before his mother’s death.

Augustine had a brilliant legal and academic career, but after his conversion he returned home to Africa and led an ascetic life. He was elected Bishop of Hippo and spent 34 years looking after his flock, teaching them, strengthening them in the faith and protecting them strenuously against the errors of the time. He wrote an enormous amount and left a permanent mark on both philosophy and theology. His Confessions, as dazzling in style as they are deep in content, are a landmark of world literature.  He was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Boniface VIII in 1308.

    St. Augustine, pray for us!

  • Morning Prayer - SATURDAY, 27 Aug 2022

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - August 27, 2022 | Memorial of St. Monica

"How wonderful is God among his saints: come, let us adore him." - antiphon, Lauds

St. Monica was born at Thagaste in Africa of a Christian family. She was married young, to Patricius, and among her children was Augustine, who would later become one of the great Doctors of the Church. He had a brilliant intellect and uncertain morals and his wayward spiritual career saw him at one time a Manichee and then a Neoplatonist. With many tears she prayed unceasingly to God for his conversion and her prayers were answered shortly before she died. She had a deep faith and outstanding virtue and is a wonderful example of a Christian mother.

    St. Monica, pray for us!

  • Morning Prayer - WEDNESDAY, 24 Aug 2022

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - August 24, 2022 | Feast of St. Bartholomew, Apostle

"Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel." - Jn 1:49b

St. Bartholomew (also known as Nathaniel), a doctor in Jewish law, was a dear friend of St. Philip the Apostle. Because Bartholomew was a man "in whom there was no guile," his mind was open to the truth. He went willingly with Philip to see Christ and recognized the Savior immediately as the Son of God. After having received the gifts of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost, Bartholomew evangelized Asia Minor, northwestern India, and Greater Armenia. In the latter country, while preaching to idolaters, he was arrested and condemned to death. (CatholicCulture.org)

  • Morning Prayer - TUESDAY, 23 Aug 2022

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - August 23, 2022 | Memorial of St. Rose of Lima, Virgin

"Lord, increase my sufferings, and with them increase your love in my heart." - St. Rose of Lima

Isabela de Oliva, nicknamed "Rosa" because of her beauty, was born in Lima, in Peru. She lived a life of selflessness and devotion from an early age. She refused to marry, and became a Dominican tertiary at the age of 20. Her asceticism and her intense spiritual experiences excited the criticism of her friends and family and the suspicion of the Church authorities.

St. Rose was first declared saint of the New World in 1672; a patroness of South America, especially Peru, and later proclaimed as Secondary Patroness of the Philippines by Pope Pius XII.

St. Rose of Lima, pray for us!

  • Morning Prayer - MONDAY, 22 Aug 2022

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - August 22, 2022 | Memorial of Our Lady, Mother and Queen

"Christ the King crowned his Mother as Queen of Heaven: come, let us adore him." - antiphon, Lauds

The doctrine of the Assumption was promulgated in 1951, with its feast on August 15. As was normal for the greater feasts, this celebration was echoed for a week afterwards, and today’s memorial of Our Lady, Mother and Queen, marks the conclusion of that period of celebration.

We remember that the Blessed Virgin reigns in heaven together with her Son. She reigns not because she is in any way equal to God but because she is the mother of Christ the King. Her privileges come from her willingly agreeing to become the Mother of God and make our redemption possible.
