LISTEN | Morning Prayer - August 20, 2022 | Memorial of St. Bernard of Clairvaux, Abbot and Doctor of the Church
"The Lord is the source of all wisdom: come, let us adore him." - antiphon, Lauds
St. Bernard of Clairvaux was born near Dijon, in France, in 1090, of a noble family. In 1112 he joined the new monastery at Cîteaux with four of his five brothers and two friends. Within three years he had been sent out to found a new monastery at Clairvaux, in Champagne, where he remained abbot for the rest of his life, practicing a life of primitive poverty and austerity.
Bernard was a man of great holiness and wisdom, and although he was often in very poor health, he was active in many of the great public debates of the time. He strongly opposed the luxurious lives of some of the clergy, and fought against the persecution of the Jews. He was also a prolific writer, of an inspiring rather than a technical kind.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - August 16, 2022 | Memorial of St. Rock (Roque), healer
St. Rock was the son of the governor of Montpellier, France. At the age of twenty, he went on a pilgrimage to Rome. When a plague broke out in Italy he took care of the infected and cured many. He himself caught the disease, but not wishing to be a burden to others, he went to the woods to die. There a dog brought him food and licked his sores. Later its owner found Rock and looked after him. He died around the year 1378. A model of those who carry out works of mercy, he is invoked in time of pestilence.
St. Rock, pray for us!

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - August 15, 2022 | Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Holy Day of Obligation.
On Nov. 1, 1950, Pius XII defined the dogma of the Assumption. Thus he solemnly proclaimed that the belief whereby the Blessed Virgin Mary, at the close of her earthly life, was taken up, body and soul, into the glory of heaven, definitively forms part of the deposit of faith, received from the Apostles. To avoid all that is uncertain the Pope did not state either the manner or the circumstances of time and place in which the Assumption took place — only the fact of the Assumption of Mary, body and soul, into the glory of heaven, is the matter of the definition.
