  • Morning Prayer - SATURDAY, 2 July 2022

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - July 2, 2022 | Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Saturday

Saturdays stand out among those days dedicated to the Virgin Mary. These are designated as memorials of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

"Whatever its historical origins may be, today the memorial... is a remembrance of the maternal example and discipleship of the Blessed Virgin Mary who, strengthened by faith and hope, on that 'great Saturday' on which Our Lord lay in the tomb, was the only one of the disciples to hold vigil in expectation of the Lord’s resurrection... It is a sign that the Virgin Mary is continuously present and operative in the life of the Church."

Let us join the universal Church in offering to God our Morning Praise through the ancient tradition of Lauds. Full-text to Saturday's Morning Prayer is available at ibreviary.com

  • Morning Prayer - THURSDAY, 30 June 2022

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - June 30, 2022 | Optional Memorial of the First Martyrs of Rome

"Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness; for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven." - Mt. 5:10

When the city of Rome had been devastated by fire in the year 64, the Emperor Nero launched a persecution against the Christians, who were thrown to the wild beasts in the arena or soaked in tar and used as living torches. Their deaths are documented in the writings of the Roman historian Tacitus and in Pope St. Clement’s letter to the Corinthians. Their feast was celebrated the day after the feast of Saints Peter and Paul.

Today we pray especially for all our persecuted Christian brothers and sisters for their steadfastness in faith, hope and love.

Together with the universal Church, we offer our praise and thanksgiving for the countless and nameless men and women who stood firm in their Christian faith through the ancient tradition of Lauds. Full-text to Thursday's Morning Prayer is available at ibreviary.com

  • Morning Prayer - WEDNESDAY, 29 June 2022

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - June 29, 2022 | Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, Apostles

"These are the ones who, living in the less, planted the Church with their blood; they drank the chalice of the Lord and became the friends of God." - Entrance antiphon

Veneration of the two great Apostles, Peter and Paul, has its roots in the very foundations of the Church. They are the solid rock on which the Church is built. They are at the origin of her faith and will forever remain her protectors and her guides. To them Rome owes her true greatness, for it was under God's providential guidance that they were led to make the capital of the Empire, sanctified by their martyrdom, the center of the Christian world whence should radiate the preaching of the Gospel.(catholicculture.org)

  • Morning Prayer - TUESDAY, 28 June 2022

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - June 28, 2022 | Memorial of St. Irenaeus, Bishop, Doctor, Martyr

"The Lord is the king of martyrs: come, let us adore him."

St. Irenaeus was born in Asia Minor around the year 140. It is not known when he came to Gaul. He was a priest of the Church of Lyons during the persecution of 177 when St. Pothinus, first bishop of the city and the first martyr of Lyons, was put to death. Irenaeus succeeded him as bishop and twenty-five years later was martyred in his turn during a fresh persecution. At a time when Gnostic sects threatened to undermine Christianity by a perversion of Christian thought, St. Irenaeus vigorously denounced all heresies and safeguarded unity of belief by laying down the principles of the doctrinal tradition of the Church.

In 2022, Pope Francis declared St. Irenaeus to be Doctor of the Universal Church. (catholicculture.org)

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - June 27, 2022 | Memorial of St. Cyril of Alexandria, Bishop and Doctor

"Speak, Lord, your servant is listening." - Ps 95:8

St. Cyril, Patriarch of Alexandria, one of the metropolitan sees of the Christian Church in the east, was one of the great defenders of the faith against the heresy of Nestorius who denied the oneness of person in Jesus Christ. At the Council of Ephesus in 431, over which he presided in the pope's name, and at his instigation, it was defined that Christ, the Son of God, is at the same time God and man, and the Blessed Virgin Mary, His mother, is truly Theotokos, the Mother of God. St. Cyril died in 444. The Church venerates him as one of her great doctors. His commentary on the Gospel of St. John is one of the richest doctrinally of those left us by the Fathers of the Church.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - June 26, 2022 | Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

"As they were going along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head." - Lk 9:57-58

Jesus calls us to follow him as he makes his way toward Jerusalem, where the mystery of death and rebirth is to be accomplished to follow these requires wholehearted commitment, the commitment of love. Nothing less is fit for the reign of God.

  • Morning Prayer - SATURDAY, 25 June 2022

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - June 25, 2022 | Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary

"Mary treasured all these words, reflecting on them in her heart." - Lk 2:19

Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary began as early as the twelfth century. During the seventeenth century in France, St John Eudes popularized this devotion along with that to the Sacred Heart. St Luke’s Gospel twice mentions that Mary ‘kept all these things in her heart’, pondering the word of God. Mary shows us how to listen to the words the Holy Spirit speaks to us in the depths of our hearts, and how to respond in faith.

Let us ask the intercession of our Blessed Mother for peace among nations, freedom for the Church, the conversion of sinners, the love of purity and the practice of virtue.

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is a devotional with long and historic provenance within Christianity, and in modern times has been established as a Solemnity for the universal Church. Today we also pray for the Sanctification of Priests.

May the Sacred Heart of Jesus, wounded by our sins, bestow on us in mercy the boundless treasures of His love and make us worthy to receive an overflowing measure of grace from that fount of heavenly gifts.

  • Morning Prayer - THURSDAY, 23 June 2022

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - June 23, 2022 | Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist

St. John the Baptist has two feasts to himself. One, in August, celebrates his death, and one, in June, celebrates his birth. And this is as it should be, for as Christ himself said, John was the greatest of the sons of men.

The greatest, but also the most tragic. A prophet from before his birth, leaping in the womb to announce the coming of the incarnate God, his task was to proclaim the fulfilment of all prophecies – and thus his own obsolescence. And he did it: with unequalled courage he spread the news that he, the greatest of all men, was the least in the kingdom of heaven.

St. John the Baptist, pray for us.
