  • Morning Prayer - FRIDAY, 04 August 2023

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - August 04, 2023 | Memorial of St. John Mary Vianney, Priest

"Come, let us worship Christ, chief shepherd of the flock." - invitatory antiphon

St. John Vianney, also known as the Holy Curé de Ars, was born May 8, 1786 in Dardilly, near Lyon, France to a family of farmers. He was ordained a priest in 1815 and became curate in Ecully. He was then sent to the remote French community of Ars in 1818 to be a parish priest.

John Vianney died on August 4, 1859. Over 1,000 people attended his funeral, including the bishop and priests of the diocese, who already viewed his life as a model of priestly holiness.

The Holy Curé of Ars was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1925. He is the patron of priests. Over 450,000 pilgrims travel to Ars every year in remembrance of his holy life.

In 2009, Pope Benedict XVI, commemorating the 150th anniversary of St. John Vianney’s death, declared the Year for Priests. The Pope wrote a Letter to Clergy, encouraging all priests to look to the Curé of Ars as an example of dedication to one’s priestly calling.

St. John Vianney, pray for us!

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - August 03, 2023 | Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time

"The Kingdom of heaven is like a net which was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind; when it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into vessels but threw away the bad." - Matthew 13: 47-48

Jesus is reminding us through the parable above that while there is time, let us seek and practice righteousness. It may be difficult to “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness” due to negative responses of some people but let us all remember that the liberty we have while on earth is limited and temporary whereas the peace and joy that we will enjoy in the Kingdom of God is eternal. Indeed, investing in the Kingdom is priceless and it’s forthcoming is worth the wait.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - August 02, 2023 | Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time

“The Kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” - Matthew 13:44

What is your ultimate desire in life?

We are on a constant journey in life towards wholeness. This search takes us each to different walks of life where we hope to find fulfillment. When we find fulfillment of life, our joys knows no bounds. That becomes, for each, his treasure. But greater than any earthly treasure is the fulfillment that comes with reaching heaven. Therefore, we should desire that Jesus remains with us always. We should go to sleep with Him on our minds, wake praying to Him and allow Him to accompany us throughout every day.

  • Morning Prayer - TUESDAY, 01 August 2023

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - August 01, 2023 | Memorial of St. Alphonsus Liguori, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

"The Lord is the source of all wisdom: come, let us adore him." - invitatory antiphon

St. Alphonsus Liguori is a doctor of the Church who is widely known for his contribution to moral theology and his great kindness. He was born in 1696 in Naples to a well-respected family, and was the oldest of 7 children. His father was Don Joseph de' Liguori, a naval officer and Captain of the Royal Galleys, and his mother came from Spanish descent.

At the age of 16, he became a doctor of civil law on January 21, 1713, though by law, 20 was the set age. After studying for the bar, he practiced law at the age of 19 in the courts. It is said in his 8 years as a lawyer, he never lost a case. Although, he resigned from a brilliant career as a lawyer in 1723 when he lost a case because he overlooked a small, but important, piece of evidence.

His resignation, however, proved profitable for the Church. He entered the seminary and was ordained three years later in 1726. He soon became a sought-after preacher and confessor in Naples. His so sermons were simple and well organized that they appealed to all people, both learned and unlearned. However, his time as a diocesan priest was short-lived: in 1732, he went to Scala and founded the Redemptorists, a preaching order.

He was a great moral theologian and his famous book, “Moral Theology”, was published in 1748. Thirty years later, he was appointed bishop, and he retired in 1775. He died just over 10 years later in 1787, and was canonized in 1839.

    St. Alphonsus, pray for us!

  • Morning Prayer - MONDAY, 31 July 2023

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - MONDAY, 31 July, 2023 | Memorial of St. Ignatius of Loyola, Priest

"Come, let us worship Christ, chief shepherd of the flock." - invitatory antiphon

St. Ignatius Loyola was born in 1491, one of 13 children of a family of minor nobility in northern Spain. As a young man Ignatius Loyola was inflamed by the ideals of courtly love and knighthood and dreamed of doing great deeds.

But in 1521 Ignatius was gravely wounded in a battle with the French. While recuperating, Ignatius Loyola experienced a conversion. Reading the lives of Jesus and the saints made Ignatius happy and aroused desires to do great things. Ignatius realized that these feelings were clues to God’s direction for him.

Over the years, Ignatius became expert in the art of spiritual direction. He collected his insights, prayers, and suggestions in his book the Spiritual Exercises, one of the most influential books on the spiritual life ever written. With a small group of friends, Ignatius Loyola founded the Society of Jesus, or the Jesuits. Ignatius conceived the Jesuits as “contemplatives in action.” This also describes the many Christians who have been touched by Ignatian spirituality.

    St. Ignatius, pray for us!

  • Morning Prayer - SUNDAY, 30 July 2023

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - July 30, 2023 | Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it." - Mt. 13:45-46
What do you consider as the highest value in your life?

Solomon valued wisdom over material wealth and power and God was pleased with Him. God indeed blesses those who desire and seek His will. His love in us enables us to choose Him over everything and everyone else. When we are able to let go of our own will and embrace God's own, He will reward us with blessing upon blessing, grace upon grace.

  • Morning Prayer - SATURDAY, 29 July 2023

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - July 29, 2023 | Memorial of Sts. Martha, Mary and Lazarus

Martha was the sister of Mary of Bethany and Lazarus. In the West, her feast day comes a week after that of St Mary Magdalene because of the old and probably erroneous tradition that Mary Magdalene was the same person as Martha’s sister.

Modern scholarship having made matters clearer, Martha, Mary and Lazarus have since 2021 been celebrated together on this day, which was formerly assigned to Martha alone.

Sts. Martha, Mary and Lazarus, pray for us!

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - July 28, 2023 | Friday in the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time

"However, the seed sown in rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it; he indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirty times what was sown." - Mt. 13:23

How are you cultivating the gifts God has bestowed you?

Each one of us carries the potential to grow and bear fruit a hundred times. Let us desire to listen and obey the voice of the Lord speaking to us through the Scripture and through the workers of His vineyard. Let us cultivate the soil of our hearts, taking care of it, watering it everyday and guarding it against anything that will come to destroy God's orchard in us.

"Harden not your hearts today, but listen to the voice of the Lord." - Ps. 94:8

How do you encounter God each day?

God is always inviting us to a relationship with Him and since we cannot fully grasp His teachings, He needs to talk to us in parables before we can actually understand him. The more we grow in this relationship, the more we will see and hear. May we open ourselves to the daily manifestation of God's presence in our lives.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - July 26, 2023 | Memorial of Sts. Joachim and Anne, Parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary

"How wonderful is God among his saints: come, let us adore him." - Invitatory antiphon

Today is the Memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, also the grandparents of Jesus. It was in the home of Saints Joachim and Anne where the Virgin Mary received her training to be the Mother of God. Thus, devotion to Anne and Joachim is an extension of the affection Christians have always professed toward our Blessed Mother. We, too, owe a debt of gratitude to our parents for their help in our Christian formation. The Church invokes this saintly couple as the patron of grandparents.

Sts. Joachim and Anne, pray for us!
