When God gave such wonderful promises to Judah, how could the people know that these promises were good? Because God backed them with His own full faith and credit. All of God’s promises are good. They are backed by the best security available: Himself.

There are wise ways to use our words, and unwise ways. We need to be mindful with what sort of ‘wisdom’ we use with our words, for there is one way that is welcomed by God, and another which is opposed by Him. As James puts it plainly in Ch 4:6, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

Some things regarding the plans of God concerning the nation of Israel seemed to Jeremiah’s ears to be almost inconceivable, impossible. But as Jeremiah was reminded, he worshipped the God who does the impossible. There is nothing too hard, too difficult for Him to do.

Despite the children’s rhyme about sticks and stones, words can hurt, even leaving lasting scars. If we are going to be sincere unhypocritical disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ, we need to watch our mouths. While we don’t want our faith to be nothing but talk, the things we say do matter.

James makes it clear: faith without works is dead. We need Jesus’ grace to do good works, but because we can do good works, we should do good works. Our faith in Christ should be seen, and the way to see our faith is through our actions.

In the first Christmas greetings in all history, the angel Gabriel gave Mary the news of the soon birth of Jesus. What did Gabriel tell her? (1) She had found grace; (2) she would have a Son; (3) He will be the great God and King.

God has wonderful plans for His forever people, plans that stretch into a future kingdom. How we need to trust the plans of God! When we belong to Him through Jesus Christ, God isn’t done with us yet. He has future plans for us…plans that are better than we can imagine.

The church is the one place where unloving partiality should be absent. We are all equal in our need for the forgiveness of God through Jesus Christ. How could any true Christian practice partiality over another? It is antithetical to the gospel, and James calls it out at the beginning of Chapter 2.

God wants us to know His word, so that we would trust His plan and promises concerning Jesus. The more we look to Him according to His word, the less we will be distracted by lies and fall into despair.

Are we to hear the word? Yes…but we are also to do what we hear. These things are not in competition against each other; we need both if we are to walk in the spiritual maturity and blessing that God desires for us.
