This episode calls believers to rejoice in God’s saving acts, revere his holiness, and practice daily worship shaped by the truth that the Lord rules overall.

    God is supreme

The glory of God was his supreme object, whether engaged in his devotional exercises, his studies, his social contact, the discharge of his public ministry, or in the publication of his writings. All inferior motives seem to have been without any discernible influence upon him (Sereno Dwight).

    Bible in a Year: Psalms 97-99 & Romans 16

Doris and I have been at this for more than five years now, and we often wonder how much longer God will use us, especially when I oversleep or miss a deadline. But I’m reminded of a comment found in the book “From Famine to Fullness,” by Dean Ulrich; it reads, “ Of all that could go wrong
in your life, God brings about good. No, we do not always know what good can come out of the situations in our lives, but God does. He makes no mistakes. We can believe that He is up to good on our behalf.”

Romans 15 closes Paul's masterwork with a call to mutual welcome, burden-bearing strength, and missional prayer. Day 227 of Precious Remedies explores what it means for the strong to serve the weak in the model of Christ, and how the welcoming community of faith becomes itself a proclamation of the gospel to a watching world.

Day 226 of Precious Remedies invites listeners to number their days wisely in the light of God's everlasting nature.

Psalms 79 and 80 give voice to seasons of spiritual desolation — when the world feels broken and God seems distant. In Day 222 of Precious Remedies, we discover that biblical grief doesn't end in despair but in petition and praise. The refrain "Restore us, O God" becomes our anchor when words run dry and hope feels thin.

A sober and comforting reflection on God’s sovereign mercy from Romans 9:16–33.

God’s mercy is His compassionate, forgiving, and steadfast love that spares us from the punishment we deserve and offers grace, restoration, and hope.

    The Nature of God’s Mercy

God’s mercy reflects His compassion, loving-kindness, and forgiveness toward humanity. It is a core attribute of His character, demonstrating His willingness to withhold just punishment and instead extend grace and restoration to those who turn to Him (Psalm 103:8-12, Exodus 34:6-7)  . In the Hebrew Scriptures, mercy is often expressed by the word “chesed”, encompassing love, kindness, and covenantal loyalty, while in the New Testament, the Greek term “eleos” emphasizes compassion and pity   Mercy is not a fleeting emotion but an enduring presence, continually available to those who seek God (Lamentations 3:22-23)

    Mercy in Action

God’s mercy is vividly demonstrated through forgiveness and salvation. Through Jesus Christ, God extends mercy by forgiving sins and offering eternal life, even when humanity is undeserving (Ephesians 2:4-5 . This mercy is intertwined with grace, showing that salvation is a gift, not earned by human effort. Scripture repeatedly emphasizes that God’s mercy is abundant, steadfast, and new every morning, providing hope and reassurance in times of trouble (Psalm 136:1, Lamentations 3:22-23)

    Experiencing and Reflecting Mercy

Believers are called to receive and reflect God’s mercy in their own lives. This includes showing forgiveness, patience, and compassion toward others, mirroring the mercy Christ has shown us (Ephesians 4:32, Matthew 18:21-35). By embracing God’s mercy, individuals can experience healing, freedom from guilt, and renewed purpose, while also extending hope and grace to those around them.

The Danger of Envy for Christians

Envy is a destructive, sinful emotion that the Bible warns believers to avoid. It is defined as a resentful longing for another’s possessions, status, or success, and is considered an act of the flesh contrary to living by the Spirit (Galatians 5:19–21)

    Biblical Warnings and Examples

The Bible shows that envy can lead to grave sin and spiritual death:

    • Cain and Abel: Cain envied God’s favor toward Abel’s offering, which led him to murder his brother (Genesis 4:3–8)
    • Joseph’s brothers: Jealous of Joseph’s favor and dreams, they sold him into slavery, causing years of family strife (Genesis 37)
    • Saul and David: Saul’s envy of David’s popularity and success drove him to attempt his life (1 Samuel 18)
    • Jesus’ arrest: The chief priests and elders envied Him, leading to His crucifixion (Matthew 27:18)

For Christians, envy is a dangerous sin that can lead to spiritual death, relational breakdown, and opposition to God’s purposes. Guarding against it is essential for living a life that honors God and reflects His love.

Paul begins by describing how all creation is groaning as in the pains of childbirth, reflecting the effects of sin and the anticipation of future redemption (Romans 8:22)  . Believers also groan inwardly, awaiting their full adoption as children of God and the redemption of their bodies (v. 23). This hope is unseen but certain, requiring patient endurance (v. 24-25). The passage highlights that salvation is not only spiritual but also involves the future transformation of creation and believers.

    The Spirit’s Intercession (vv. 26-27)

In our weakness, the Holy Spirit intercedes for us with “wordless groans” when we do not know how to pray (v. 26). God, who searches hearts, knows the Spirit’s mind and intercedes according to His will (v. 27). This assures believers that even in uncertainty, God’s Spirit is actively working on their behalf.

    God’s Sovereign Purpose (vv. 28-30)

Paul affirms that all things work together for good for those who love God (v. 28). He outlines the chain of salvation: foreknowledge, predestination, calling, justification, and glorification (vv. 29-30). This demonstrates God’s sovereign plan to conform believers to the image of Christ, ensuring their ultimate redemption and security.

Assurance of God’s Love (vv. 31-39)

Paul poses rhetorical questions to emphasize God’s protection and provision: if God is for us, no one can stand against us (v. 31). Christ’s sacrifice guarantees that God will graciously give all things (v. 32). No accusation or condemnation can separate believers from God’s love (vv. 33-34). Paul concludes with a triumphant declaration: neither death, life, angels, rulers, present or future powers, nor anything in creation can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus (vv. 38-39)
