hello hello! welcome back to another episode of Presenting...Genesis. 

this week i'm talking about something kind of fun! as opposed to last week which was quite (literally) sober and serious. we're talking about tattoos. I have been getting tattoos since I was 19. To me, since I see them everyday, they are nothing to comment on. But this past week cooking with my family, they saw a tattoo of mine on my hand and immediately started bombarding me with questions: "When did you get that? Why did you get that? What does it mean? Did it hurt?" etc. I started thinking about the fact that I didn't really want to share, but it would seen as rude if I didn't, so I went against my feelings and I did.

So this episode is about the gaze, the need for people to comment on our bodies, and why we don't have to answer questions about our bodies if we don't want to!

this is an emotional episode. i’m gonna be talking about drug abuse and relapse, not in specifics, but i know very well how difficult of a subject that can be. so if this is not something you can deal with today, or maybe ever, i will see you next week. for those sticking around, welcome back to “Presenting…Genesis” where I *very slowly* come out of my “whale mode”.

as you can tell by the title of today’s episode, i relapsed. i wasn’t sober for very long, 8 months, but even one day is amazing to me. for a while, even though i knew i had a problem, i didn’t go sober because i didn’t want to deal with having relapsed. but now that i have (and not for the first time) there are a lot of thoughts. although i'm not currently in any of the Anonymous rooms, i'm reflecting on the first two steps. click the links below to learn more about the 12 steps.

today i'm talking about Baltimore. Baltimore, Maryland, USA where the slogan is "The Greatest City in America". i was just home in Baltimore visiting my family on a rare weekend off from work and I realized I have A LOT of thoughts about Baltimore that i've never shared before. 

i'm taking you on a tour of my family history, the history of Baltimore (in short), and some of things I love and don't like about Baltimore.

i think a lot about how words once reframed can bring us joy and community, rather than loneliness and deeper self-understanding rather than assimilation and conformity. i recently read an entry on substack - which I just started --> Presenting...Genesis 

anyway i read an entry by anecdotes, spirals, deconstruction, fever dreams called "grief is just love with no place to go" which i highly recommend. they reframe grief as love. i've done a lot of reframing of language in my years and I wanted to talk about some of what I've learned, specifically the word "excited". 

there are so many philosophers and filmmakers who talk about this kind of thing such as Walter Benjamin, Andrei Tarkovsky, bell hooks, Andy Warhol, Patricia Hill Collins, James Baldwin, Anaïs Nin, the list goes on. I highly recommend you check them out.

this week, we're talking being a beginner. The genesis of Genesis if you will, the soft g of it all. It is very grounding to be starting, to be in the ing. I'm living up to my name. I'm a beginner in basically every aspect of my life. I'm understanding how beautiful and private this process of beginning in public is for me and I wanted to share what it's been like turning my dreams into reality without the want of public opinion. I'm fumbling, muddling through my explanation of it, but through it all, beginning is all about truth, trust, and belief.

Hello and welcome back to my podcast where I come out of my "whale mode" and present myself to you all. Last week, I touched on this idea, well reality, of the persona. Getting back into socializing, as well as starting a podcast and a Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCF3K7yrrf3-f8Z73T7QEeRw) I'm thinking a lot about how I want to show up on those platforms, how much or how little I want to share, what parts I want to give you all access to, as well as, how I used to portray myself, however "genuine" or "fake". And I'm coming to understand that no matter how I portray myself anywhere, in real life or online, someone from my past, present, and/or future might say that I am acting fake because who the parts I'm giving you all access to are not the same parts I give them access to. I've understood for a while that different people and situations bring out different parts of us and this week, I'm diving into that. 

So, go for a drive, fold your laundry, wash your dishes, lay down cause this is a long one.

When I first moved to Durham, over a year ago, I immediately got a library card. I was in the adult non-fiction section and I came across this book about how to make adult friendships. I checked out the book, but I never read it. I thought I had made all the friendships that were really meaningful to me already. 1. arrogant much... 2. heavy, heavy dissociation. Upon further reflection, I should have read that book because boy was I wrong. Socializing is an art, an art I am very much a novice in.
