On March 25, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled "Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections." This directive introduces several significant changes to the U.S. electoral process, including:

• Proof of Citizenship for Voter Registration: States are required to verify the citizenship status of individuals during the voter registration process.​
• Mail-In Ballot Deadlines: The order mandates that all mail-in ballots must be received by Election Day to be counted.​
• Ban on Foreign Donations: It prohibits foreign contributions within 30 days of an election.

States that do not comply with these provisions risk losing federal funding. ​ The executive order has sparked considerable controversy and legal debate. 

Critics argue that it infringes upon states' rights to regulate their own election procedures, as outlined in the U.S. Constitution. Legal experts anticipate numerous challenges to the order's constitutionality, citing concerns over potential voter disenfranchisement and the president's authority over independent election agencies. ​
